Temporary fixes for torn Front Bumper

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Not a great way to start vacation but things happen.

Got to the hotel and while parking the car torn off the front bumper. Both sides are now detached supported only by screws in the middle.

I am 6hrs away from home and need ride for next 3 days of vacation. Any ideas for temporary fixes.

Not sure if this would work without being able to see it in person, but from the looks of it you could use zip ties to hold it up.

This has happened to me before after encountering a slightly high parking bump. You can just push everything back on and it should be fine. I drove around a week with my bumper ripped along the sides while I waited for my new parts and it never flew off . For added safety zip tie like mentioned above. Freaking sucks.

    Thanks for your help guys.

Pushed it back and used couple of zip ties. I am back home with no issues and it is holding the bumper pretty good.

Now comes the $$$ part, multiple options:

    1. Go to dealer and claim it with insurance
    2. Classifieds or ebay for used part (No repainting)
    3. Explore options to see if existing bumper can be repaired.

@Noel, How did you fix your bumper?

OE bumper brother, nothing like it. I would take advantage and order something better like s-line or DTM if you can. After market bumpers won't really have the same fitting. Paint shouldn't be more than like 250-300+part cost.

I think his bumper might not be salvageable as the seam along the top side completely detached and it's pretty long. Only way I can think of them fixing it properly would be to plastic weld that baby. If you are on a budget and your a little brave you can always plastic weld it from the inside yourself. They have joint mesh and you should be able to weld it together pretty easily.

I have this one and it works well:

Quote from Dealer body shop is $1460 minimum.

@seco007, your's seems like small detach, mine was torn-off under headlight as well. Will check local body shops to see if they can patch me up.

Rip off dude, I think I paid like 500 for bumper and 200 for paint using OE parts.

There are so many options. I would definitely look into buying your own parts and doing it yourself or finding a good shop to do it much cheaper.

You should use this as an excuse to upgrade your bumper.

Took out the side panel screws over the weekend to analyze the damage and found that most of the nuts are in place. Pushed bumper tabs back into the position and put the screws:

Seems like it will hold on pretty good.

    Missing parts:

    - 3 bolts underneath the bumper. (will order OEM parts for this)
    - missing bolts to the two white screws on the passenger side (tried 1/4" bolts with 12 mm socket but it didn't fit) any ideas?

Dude take it off and support that entire side tab with like 10 sticks of jb weld before it rips off completely. That is the only thing that can be used ot hold the bumper at the correct angle. Otherwise it keeps popping out and only those tabs on the side are the only thing holding it in.

Use zip ties to pull the bumper back more and make it look more even to the body. I just ripped mine off when I went to close to a sidewalk and pulled away. I had help pushing the bumper into place and used zip ties inside the bumper to hold everything together. I used multiple sizes though to make them not noticeable on the outside of the car.

Has anyone tried plasting welding? I ripped my bumper off a few months ago and it broke those side tabs completely off. JBWeld wouldn't hold it back. ^_^

The B7 that I just picked up had it's bumper torn off by the previous owner. I picked up THIS 3M adhesive and will be trying it out on the weekend in order to re-attach the ripped off tabs.

Let me know if that works. The JB Weld I used wasn't durable enough. It just didn't get enough bite into the plastic and always ended up snapping back off.

JB weld didn't work for me. So i designed my own fix. Quik Latches

    http://www.quik-latch.com/

put one on each side, and now the bumper is secured but i can remove it super easily, takes me like 30 seconds

I did jbweld and after about 6 months it all broke, so i sanded it all off and plastic welded. Got a really good firm hold and it held up against me pushing/hitting it from various angles.

Only downside is i heated up the bumper a bit too much and there is a slight dip in the outside now that is visible, but that is much better than having a bumper broken off.

BUTTTTT since then the plastic weld has also broke in the middle of itself (still attached on bumper and bolt, just plastic weld broke in the middle)

Jb weld failed, plastic weld failed. My passenger side bumper is completely torn at those two 10mm nut holding piece.
Now I am going to try lord fusor 143 with some mesh. If it doesn't hold, quick latch it is. Mec, I will need to replicate the latch system.

I looked into that when I broke mine - I actually reached out to Mec for that. Decided to go with JD weld first to see if it would stay on.

In my search for references I bookmarked this Youtube video - although its a B5 you get the idea.

mec i noticed that my bumper only needs to stay on in the drivers side only. like that strip that holds the bumper is broken. the rest is held in good. is there i way a body shop can patch that part in the corner near the headlight is sticking out. so i have duck tape in there is not noticeable but it bothers me lol.

Alright. I tried plastic weld and it didn't work. I think I'm going with the snaps. Martin, you mind grabbing a photo of the install? Mostly curious where you mounted them on the inside.

Bumper is like 500 shipped from GAP, and if any paint shop quotes you more than 350 to dead panel a bumper they are ripping you off.

I already tried plastic weld. Does nothing. Broke on the first try mounting the bumper. I am going to try lord fusor 143 or the latches. Check lord fusor bumper repairs. It seems pretty good. I know Phil used the same for his dtm mesh grills.

That quick latch system is pretty cool. My bumper is torn on both sides as well but the sides stay in place. The top corners towards the headlights are what stick out on my front end.

Yeah I had the same problem with the plastic weld. I'm done trying. I figure it's $40 to TRY lord fusor and hope that finally does it or $60 and i get the latches fix that over complicated system. 5-900$ for a new bumper is a little out of the budget at the moment for a non-essential repair.

I used this stuff on the weekend. It sets VERY quickly (10 seconds) and is fully cured in about 15 minutes. Pretty easy to work with but you need several tips as they get filled with cured epoxy. I used 13 tips. I don't have any road use on it yet but the repaired sections feel strong. Like most things, the prep is what makes it last. You must thoroughly clean the surfaces, degrease with IPA, scuff it up and then spray an adhesion promoter. I also drilled small holes in both adjoining pieces so that the epoxy could flow to both sides. This gives a much stronger bond.

Sure. Check out post #18. There is a link to the 3M product that I used. Search for that 3M # on amazon. If you read the 3M link it will also tell you the part number for the dispensing gun if you don't have one already as well as the primer, tips and plastic sheets.

    3M 04247 adhesive
    3M 08193 tips
    3M 04903 contour sheets
    3M 05907 primer
I use this dispensing gun instead of the super expensive 3M one: COX M200LVMR
