    Headliner removal help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been using this page http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ight=headliner to help me remove my headliner. I have it free and loose all the way around. My only problem is that it doesn't show you how get it loose around the sunroof and center. That's where I'm stuck at now. Does anyone have something visual that shows how to get it loose from the center, or even if some one can tell me how to remove it from that point?

    Thanks in advance.

You can register at Erwin.audiusa.com and pay about $30 for 24 hours access and print as much of the factory service manual as you want during that time. The manual will show the steps required to either remove the skylight trim holding the headliner, or removal of the skylight.

If you open the sunroof you will see a black metal ring around the sunroof opening. There are about 15 clips holding it in. I found it easier to remove those clips with the sunroof open , working from the roof. These are the clips im referring to (picture is from diy thread) http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9897/57526565.jpg

Just pull straight down on the headliner and they should just unhook? I feels like something is going to snap or break.

thats normal, just dont rip it down. the clips are tight so once you get it loose they will come right out.

If you are pulling down on the metal trim ring, you wont rip the headliner. It just takes some firm pressure applied to it to get those clips to start separating. The clips are about 3-4inches apart so to get it to come loose you really need at least 2 of them to start loosening at the same time before it will start coming apart.

I had a harder time getting mine to clip back in than I did getting it out. The clips need to be tight to hold up the headliner and some of my clips were slightly tweaked and needed me to reshape them in order to hold tight enough upon install. If I were to do it over again I would buy new clips in advance and use them.

When you get to the point of installing the sunshade for the sunroof (if you are doing that also), don't do it the hard way. There is a very easy way to replace the sunshade that I posted in one of the headliner DIYs.

I'm not doing the sunshade.. My interior is fine, I just got in the car the other day and saw the headliner was sagging. The issue is that I can't even get my hands in there to get a hand hold on the clips, or the trim ring everyone is talking about. In fact I can't see nor feel it, all I feel is cardboard. The fact of the matter is that the headliner is so distorted from trying to get it out, that I know I need a new one now.. SMDH. Right now I'm just to the point where I'm using headliner adhesive just to stick it back up there, so I can live with it for the time being. I refuse to spend $700 to get a new one and I have to find a reputable upholstery shop that deals with European cars down where I live. So I'm screwed both ways..

Hey! It was a long time ago but I think the pins giving you an issue can also be accessed from the sunroof (dont quote me on this! but try a flat head to get the upper ring off, that might give you an easier time to the lower clips)

Also if you are looking to get a head liner a lot of people on here sell theres for reasonable prices.

GL with either reupholstering or getting a new one.

Tried that as well, with no luck. I know all of this stuff comes off, but I'm putting so much force behind it to get it off. Honestly things will break or crack in the process. I don't need to make things worse than they already are. I know with my luck that's what will happen.

I hear yourautrotrim is good. I haven't installed my fabric from there yet. 65vettec6 has, and pics can be found in his 2.7 swap b6 avant thread.

I got my hands/fingers as close to the clips as possible, and gripped it in a way, so that the headliner cardboard wouldn't break. Obviously, you won't want to only use one finger as a hook, placed as far from a clip as possible, as this will rip/break the headliner.

The first one was the hardest. After that, it was easy. Maybe grab the headliner in a way that it won't break or tear?

Worst case scenario, something cracks and you repair the headliner board with fiberglass.
