    New PCV valve is faulty

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Diagnosed my current PCV valve as faulty by trying the standard opening of the filler cap whilst the engine is running and turns out it does run rough.

So installed a new valve but upon starting it, it started choking and struggling to idle. So took it off and noticed that one of the openings on the new valve was missing a sort of plunger/piston compared to the old one.

See below for photos to get an idea of what I'm on about. Manufacturing fault? Bought it off JHM about a month ago and only got around to installing it now.

FYI, the engine will run rough when you remove the fill cap whether the valve is faulty or not. You now introduced a huge vacuum leak when that happens. Hopefully Jake can chime in on whether the new valve is defective. GL

Yeah that's what I thought! I don't why people are saying that it symptom of a bad PCV valve.

Anyway I'll see if I can get my hands on another valve and see if it's got the plunger thingo.

Blow through the plastic corrugated tube connected to the pcv. If it's broken it will not seal and it will let air through.

I don't know where the oil cap test came from, but it's les poop.

Exactly, blowing through the corrugated tube is the only real way to check it.

Agreed. I don't know why that is floating around either lol.

But honestly, the original PCV may not have been bad. Do what the guys have listed, blow through it. Usually when it is bad you get the exact same problems when you put the "new" one on. You'll also get very erratic idle fluctuations.
Don't forget too, you can pop the plastic circular piece off that houses the diaphram and inspect the diaphram for rips/tears.

Look at the part numbers of each, specifically the final letter. This indicates whether they should be the exact same part or not. I just installed a new revision PCV and I don't have the plunger you're referencing. Audi regularly changes the design of parts through new revision; they may have decided what youre looking for is not necessary, and therefore removed it from the design. A part with a different letter at the end is a new revision.

Yeah just trawled through the different revisions and apparently the "R" version is what I need.
This looks like my current one - view the second photo to get a good look at the plunger. http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B7_A4-...lve/ES2715561/

The 2006 and earlier 2.0t use a different version of the PCV and Breather tube than the 2007+ 2.0t. You probably got the wrong one.

Some revisions have that valve and some don't. Did you order the correct early vs late PCV?

Are you sure everything was installed correctly? If the PCV was indeed bad to begin with we will warranty it.

    Let me know!

    Early: http://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalo...0t-p-1882.html

    Late: http://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalo...0t-p-1983.html

    NOTE ON BUILD DATE SPLIT:

There is a split on this part for B7-A4 2.0Ts. If you have a B7-A4 2.0T with a build date before December 16th, 2005 (displayed as 16.12.2005 in your car) you will have the EARLY version of this part. If you have a B7-A4 2.0T with a build date AFTER December 16th, 2005 (displayed as 16.12.2005 in your car) you will have the LATE version of this part. If that's the case, please go back one section and select the LATE part and add it to your cart.

Common confusion is that people will see the non OEM PCV for 39.89 and order it for their late car even if it is early.

I'm not sure what my build date is. It's an '06 but I'm assuming it was built just before December 2005.
Now that I know the differences between the valves I've obviously ordered the wrong one!

No need for warranty Jake, this is purely just a case of retardation on my account!

There is no visual difference between the parts which makes it even more confusing.

Funnily enough, this is the exact reason I stuffed up in the first place. I couldn't tell which revision I needed so I clicked on the one that looked identical to what I had lol.
