Manual transmission RPM dips on 1st gear Q

Just curious if other 6speed manual transmission drivers notice an unusual RPM dip when starting on 1st gear for their A4.

    2010 A4 Quattro 6spd manual 74k

When I start on 1st gear and start to balance even if I don't move the clutch petal after maybe depressing 10% the RPM will drop close to stalling. As a result I over compensate gas and will typically have a rev going to 2-3k before I can balance the gear into 1st gear. I notice this RPM drop more noticeably when the transmission is still cold.

My theory has been that the ECU has been changing the responsiveness of the gas pedal when maybe I drive in traffic and change to aggressive driving. I heard of other a4 drivers commenting that their cars felt faster after getting service from dealerships even if they just reset the service interval light. It had something to do with driving patterns. So as a result 1st gear feels different every time and I'm having trouble adjusting to the changes.

I owned an MR2 with a stage 3+ ACT clutch that acted like this but that seemed normal. Is my clutch possibly getting worn?

I have 5+ years manual transmission daily driving experience. When I drive my prelude or Celica I don't notice these types of drops on their manual trannys.

I have definitely noticed this as well. Mine is a 2010 also. Only 33,000KM however. I'm not 100% sure but it seemed as if my issues coincided with the installation of new coil packs after I had a couple of them fail about 6 months ago.

It is even more pronounced when starting on a hill. I am forced to over compensate with RPM and then slowly wait a split second for it to balance out.

I have my 35K service scheduled in a few weeks and will be bringing this up with the dealership.

I will keep you all updated.

Had my 35K service completed yesterday and mentioned the difficulties getting into first on occasion and the RPM boost required to get it to balance and they couldn't really provide a prognosis.

They took it for a test drive and couldn't reproduce the problem. They did mention that "hill assist" (2013 models and newer) aids in smoothing out this take off at lower RPM's which makes sense.

This scheduled maintenance did include new spark plugs, and I did notice a slight improvement on the drive home. Not a complete fix however.

At this point it doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary in the eyes of the dealership. As we move into summer and warmer weather perhaps the issue will subside.

    ?

My RPMs increase automatically in first gear from a stop. If I release the clutch a little and give it no gas revs increase to about 1100. I figured it was just some sort of anti stall noob function.?

Bermudakid - I have thought that maybe it is an anti stall thing as well. But the problem is that I feel like it is kicking in all the time for me. I am use to taking off at really low rpm on standard cars. I take off below idle or exactly at idle in all of my cars. Maybe because I have such aggressively low idles that the idle jumps up for me so I adjust my clutch foot accordingly. But I will have that clutch dump feeling because of the sudden increase in rpm without balancing.

I'll experiment with this to see if there is any difference. Might be hard to kick the habit!

    MY REPLY :
YOU GUYS ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. THERE ABSOLUTELY IS A DEVICE USING VACCUUM OR ELECTRONICS THAT WILL TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR RPMS DURING TAKE-OFF IN FIRST GEAR (MANUAL 6 SPEED OF COURSE)

THIS IS COMPLETELY TERRIBLE AN WE MUST FIND A SOLUTION BECAUSE THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE A MANUAL IF YOUR CONTROL IS DIMINISHED EVEN THE TINIEST BIT. I HAVE SEARCHED FOR THE CAUSE AND HAVE NOT FOUND IT YET. HOWEVER IF I DON'T FIND THIS DASTARDLY THING , I WILL DUMP THE CAR !!!

CONTACT ME AT [email protected] if you have any new comments or discoveries on this. THANKS !!!

I'm dealing with the same issue.... I had my clutch and flywheel replaced under warranty due to some clutch chatter.

Fast forward 1 year and I am dealing with RPM drop off in first gear and hesitation when trying to accelerate on an incline. Car is going in for service on Wednesday so we'll see what they say.

As a matter of interest, do you all put the car in neutral as often as possible or do you keep the car in gear and the clutch pressed when stopped?

Long traffic light I'll put it in neutral, any short stop I usually keep the clutch pressed in gear. I've heard that this isn't ideal for the car, but around town it seems safer to be able to move more quickly if needed.
