    R8 Cost to Own

New to this board, as I usually hang out on the S5 board... I have had my S5 for a few months now and absolutely love it. I've always had sports cars, but this is my first German.

I've always had the pipe dream of getting a supercar and the R8 has quickly come to the top of the list and more attainable as of late.

Having said that, what does the upkeep on an R8 look like in comparison to a Lambo/Ferrari? With the latter, I know you end up spending $10k or so every couple of years solely in upkeep, is the R8 the same?

It seems like I see a lot more DD R8's, so I am assuming it is no where near what the others are...

Its not so bad. carbon cleanings are the same as RS5/ RS4, brakes are same costs too.
I realistic car you could afford to own and drive daily. Buy the V8, and charge it, will be faster than the V10 and cost less to maintain.

Anything outside of the normal Oil, Brakes, and tires that needs to be figured in?

What do you estimate you spend in a year on upkeep?

Just trying to get a realistic cost and not a crazy estimate from some auto review magazine.

+1 Really the R8 is relative to the RS4/5 in owning. Especially without carbon ceramic brakes. We also agree that boosting the V8 is the way to go. The Heffner kit is available as well as one of our vendors Addict:Aviva, who has a Twin Turbo kit that has been running for almost 2 years now. They're looking at an excess of 600whp on 92 octane and meth. Comparatively, the V10 makes mid 400whp and is heavier.

If you have the means, go for it.

Ok, I was just worried the R8 would be similar to the Italians... I have heard/been told that you are looking at 10k every 2-3yrs when you bring it in for a full service with those bad boys.

I'm looking for the poor man's everyday supercar

If you are looking at a poor man's supercar you should look at the GTR. I have a GTR and the mags say maintenance is really expensive but it isnt. I was able to source a set of barely used rotors for like $600. The only major service is the transmission fluid change and that works out to $60 bucks a quart x 8 quarts. Bolt ons with e85 will get you 600whp.

Obviously a GTR isnt a R8 styling/panache wise but for the performance bang for the buck the GTR is a great value.

    maintenance cost wise: gtr < R8 < porsche/ferrari/lambo/mclaren

The R8 wasn't too expensive at all. I only had mine for about 18 months, but with Audi Care the only thing I ended up paying for were two rear tires and I needed one rim straightened. Car was super reliable. Traded mine in for an RS7 because I needed something that could carry more people and cargo at times.

Yeah, I've considered the GTR, but it just isn't an R8. I've always had the pipe dream of one day owning a foreign supercar, but never thought it was attainable.

I've had numerous American Sports Cars, the most recent being a 07' Z06. I traded it in for an Audi S5 because I wanted the combo of sport/luxury and have since fell in love with Audi. Hence while I am really looking at an R8. I doubt I would keep the R8 longer than 2 years as I'm to that point in life where I'll be starting a family soon. This seems like the last real chance to do something slightly crazy and flashy. I could pick up an 08-09 R8 and have a note somewhere in the $800 range.

Decisions Decisions.... I just don't want to get into a money pit ala Ferrari/Lambo since I only plan on having it for a few years. Who knows, after that, maybe a GTR since it could hold a baby seat

Seriously I think if you have to ask the question, then I don't think you are ready to own the car. It's sort of like the kid asking if hey can afford the insurance on "X" car.....

You could daily drive any car! My buddy drives his 458 everywhere. I drive my R8 to make Target runs but only because it's fun and I'm in no rush as I have to park way in the back, mainly because the car is so much wider the doors are hard to open in a normal spot. Trunk is ridiculously small so even buying a case of water is an issue.

All cars will have maintenance in terms of brakes and oil, tires, etc. My work truck eats tires and brakes too so those are wear/tear items.

Just buy what you can afford - if you are getting a new R8 maintenance can be included as part of their package.
