Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I have been looking at S5's for a while now.....And I had a question..

In driving impression, which would you rather have and why.. A 3.0 supercharged V6 or the NA V8???

Please feel free to discuss performance, handling, etc.....

On a track in my V6 S4 i was catching, passing and then walking away from my good friend in his V8 S5. My car is bone stock, he has exhaust and it a much more experienced and better track driver than i am. My car was just flat out faster. His sounded a hell of a lot better though.

I drove both back to back when I was shopping. It was really the only way to discern the differences. The V8 handling isn't as good as the V6T, mostly because of weight and Audi probably changed some suspension settings. The sound out of the V8 far surpasses the V6.

I bought the V8 because it fit with what I wanted at the time. I'm happy with my decision but it would have been nice to get more power for much less money than the ~$20k it will cost to add a supercharger. V6T tuning is cheap in comparison.

You need to honestly ask yourself what you care about and what you are going to use the car for.

Agree with halcyon - it really depends on how you drive and what you are looking for.

The 3.0T makes more torque in the lower RPM ranges, and when I test drove the V8 vs V6T - the 3.0T feels "quicker" for normal daily driving - you have to use more of the rev range of the V8 - but that's not necessarily a bad thing :)

There are several good options for exhaust for the V6 engine that makes it sound pretty good. It's not like a V8, but I love the supercharger whine and exhaust note combination from my S5 since I've modified it with an open filter intake and AWE exhaust. Stock vs. stock - the V8 wins hands down in the sound department to me - but sound is very subjective...

    Also - I'm 6MT, but if going auto the V8 is a normal torque-converter auto, while the 3.0T has the S-tronic dual-clutch...

Drove both cars. The V8 felt "nose heavy" and seemed to have a bit more understeer. The V8 sound was excellent.
I went with the V6. It just felt a bit more nimble and balanced. JMHO of course.

I too test drove both the V6t and the V8. I love speed, but I love the perception of speed even more. The V8 won just because even when tooling around at 30mph, it reminds you its there. Feels more in-character to me. I test drove the V6t without the optional "engine sound replicator" thingie. Might as well have been a Honda V6 under the hood. Sorry, I know that will piss off some people but that's how it sounded, it went like stink though. Agree with others here who have said the low-end torque would make it the faster daily driver, can't speak for the track as I haven't gotten to the track yet.

In the end, you will have a great car no matter which engine is under the hood. Drive it like you stole it!

I loooooved my V8 S5...even to the point where I still wonder if it was a smart move to go with the RS5. I considered the V6T as a replacement but was too worried about the sound and lack of "grunt", so I decided to go with the RS5 instead.
Personally after having extensively driven both the V8 S5 and V6T, I'd still go with the V8. Not only does it sound better, but I think it looks better too.

I have the V6T with a Stasis tune and honestly the only thing I would say I miss about a V8 is the sound. That's it.

I had a Infiniti Q50 try and race me the other night (didn't care to) but he downshifted and WOT'd with a ricer flyby after 3 attempts of me sticking out 55mph and i could almost not hear it.

    V8 or bust!

I drove two V6T's before finding my car. It was coming down to the Audi S5 or a BMW M3 and I preferred the feel of the M3 by far because of the engine and raw power, the V6T seemed very docile. I finally drove a V8 S5 and the engine was far more enjoyable to me, sound was amazing, quality of the Audi seemed far better than its counterpart. Better yet, I soon found a lightly used V8 with a supercharger and I was sold. I agree with the nose feeling a bit heavy, the Alu Kreuz solved that and I am now quite happy with my choice. Really depends on what your looking for but I suspect the V8 may hold it's value slightly better, I know when I was looking, the dealers had no problem finding a buyer for them (this was last year).

    Good luck with your choice!

I had the v8 and now have the 3.0t supercharged. 3.0t with APR stage 1 and AWE exhaust hands down. More power, lighter, S-tronic and the sound is just as good if not better. I don't miss a thing. Good luck.

You can't go wrong with either the V6T or the V8. Be sure to drive both before you decide.
I drove both several times before I bought my V8 S5 coupe and it was a very tough choice. The V6T does handle a little better and feels like it has more power on the low end for daily driving. However, the sound of the V8, plus more HP when you've got the revs up finally won me over (so I tend to put my foot more into the V8 to get the revs up than I did with the V6T).
Also get an S5 with the Drive Select option if at all possible.

Exactly my thoughts too. From the second you start it up it just feels different. Probably doesnt handle as well and probably is slightly slower but for me its not a choice. V8 is too good.
