No start problem- Location of starter relay?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My car does not want to start, won't turn over at all. I replaced the ignition switch, and I jumped the clutch switch, nothing. All dash light go on, and no noise at all. I've tired jumping the battery, still nothing. My last option before a starter is the starter relay, is there such a thing, and where is it located exactly?

One thing he forgot to mention is that the car runs perfect when he push starts it...so it's not ECU or anything like that I'm pretty sure. Come on, help this guy out! We are stumped

I don't have my wiring diagrams in front of me but I remember there's an antitheft circuit built into the convenience module. It's basically a starter interrupt. Other than that I don't remember a starter relay.

I checked all the wiring PDFs for the 1999.5 1.8T.

    The wiring path is:

ignition switch to park/neutral switch to starter.

The central locking system will prevent power from going to the ignition switch when the alarm is tripped.

Therefore, the path to kicking the starter over would be:

central locking to ignition switch to park/neutral switch to starter.

Excellent, thanks Daft. That is what I was looking for, but I put a new one in, and still nothing. I don't have time for this, so off to the dealer she went.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but my car seems to have the exact same problems as yours... What did the dealer end up replacing/fixing?
I've already replaced the ignition switch and checked the battery for voltage.

The easiest place to check this out is at the starter relay location. You can check several things there:

A - Check for 12V+ from ignition switch "START" position
B - Check for constant 12V+ from battery
C - Check for resistance to ground through the starter solenoid
D - Check for ground from clutch switch/anti-theft.

At a minimum, if you have A and C, you can just connect them with a jumper wire and toss the relay. This directly connects the "START" position output of the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. It doesn't have to be a permanent solution, either. Whilst simplifying the system, this does remove the safety feature of requiring the clutch to be pushed in to start the engine. If left in gear, a driver could inadvertently kill someone. That said, my car has the relay bypassed in this manner (due to my 5-speed swap) and I've not run over anyone...promise.

European cars dont even have that function anyway.

We're simply taught to ensure the car is in neutral before turning the key.
