Just bought a 2003 Audi A4 3.0.. Engine noise has gotten worse.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i recently bought an Audi 2003 A4 3.0 with 104k miles on it. The engine noise im experiencing was relatively quite in the beginning and my friend reassured me that it was not a big deal, but the other day it got worse and sounds like this

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFZ1Nqvb3xI

after driving around a little bit the sound died down, but it is still there. Am i screwed or is this ok?

i will say that i do not notice anything wrong with the car, in fact when in sport mode it wips around like nothing ive ever driven before.

hmm. Thats a strange noise. It doesnt sound good at all. Its almost like a pumping noise. Has the oil been changed? Maybe the oil weight is completely off and the engine cannot pump oil to the heads? Does the noise go away when RPMs are increased?

all of the 3.0 engines have a tick as far as I know. Its a noisy engine. All of the money that Audi spends on shit, you think they could create a quite engine. Ever hear a 2.0t?

After the other 3.0 guys get home from work,. there will be more meaningful posts here. Sorry I cant help more.

yeh i changed it after i bought it to 5w-30 (full synthetic). after driving my friend home the noise quieted down to the original noise that i bought it with, which is a slight ticking noise. and also, when my friend connected his laptop to the audi, it did not give off any codes. everything came out fine.

    Steam engine mod?
I am assuming it speeds up with engine rpm?

That's right I summoned the ghost of Thomas Savery, more torque. Yeh it does speed up as I rev the engine

I'd check the belts at the front of the engine and see if anything there has a louder sound. It almost sounds like something is rubbing. The ticking sounds normal to me, but there is a pulsing rubbing sound in the video.

I have no idea what is making the sound like pac-man eating those dots.

try removing the serpentine belt, and see if the noise goes away.

I would pull the timing belt cover off too and check the tension. I would say that noise is a big deal.
    Automatic or manual gearbox?

automatic, i do have the whole timing belt kit that i wanted to install this weekend. the only thing is that it sounds like it is coming from the engine. when i first bought it, it was a feint ticking sound and my friend said it was a normal sound coming from the lifters.

The ticking is normal, but the rubbing sound is not. Above is a video of my engine running. I'd be concerned that a belt is rubbing on a cover or a bearing is going bad on something and the belt is going to go. I don't know of anything in or around the engine bay that could make that sound other than a belt rubbing or possibly something around the trans.

    :/ rod knock?

I'm leaning more toward torque converter issue.
    Noise change in P, N, D?

Make sure when you do your timing belt you have the cam locks and such.

Had the same thought. Drain oil would likely have metallic shavings if the lower end of the engine is causing this noise. OP?

Less expensive culprits could be a wobbling harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) or other belt driven pulleys. I +1 the suggestions to check the belts. Watch for shavings and rub marks during disassembly.

the noise does not change when switching into gears. ill be able to check it this weekend.

if it was an issue with the belts, wouldn't it affect the way the car drives. when driving it feels completely normal.

Not if they're just rubbing, and it wouldn't take too much to make that noise.

I went to the mechanic and while discussing it with them the engine overheated and the coolant started emptying out. They both agreed that it was the waterpump. Good thing I bought the whole kit with the timing belt. I started today and I'm upto the part where I should have cam locks, but I dont. Is there anyway around not having cam locks

Some people claim to have done the job without the locks, but I don't know how. There is a part where you need to loosen the cam bolts and that alone is a reason for the locks.

Without the locks you could risk mis timing the engine. Where are you from, if your local to philly I could lend you my locks.

I just did mine last week and used vice grips with very fine marks everywhere to make sure there's no movement! It's tricky to loosen cam bolt this way but possible! Everything ran smoothly after! I was lucky that I had a buddy of mine who's a mechanic cuz that was one hell of a job!

It just scares me to have someone whose never done the job before, do it without the tools. It's just not worth the risk. Jhm rents the tools for like $40....

Without extensive mechanical experience, timing belt replacement should not be attempted without the specified special tools, specifically the cam locking tool. Postpone the job until you can rent or barrow the required tool.

The risk of failure and engine damage is very high if the cam tool is not used.

I should probably elaborate more. I don't wanna mislead the op. The friend that I had guiding me on this is a euro mechanic, he has the tool but it was apparently out on loan to someone. He assured me that we could do it and he had done it many times! It definitely is not something that someone should do that isn't familiar with these cars! If you have the ability to get the tool you should!
