Anyone Here Running Dunlop SP Maxx GT tires????

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone else think these are the loudest and noisiest tires ever???....they seems to grip well and steering feel is good, but they are buzzing like a hornets nest on anything other than the smoothest of roads...if they weren't brand new, I would be going PSS all the way...starting to drive me nuts...btw, i didn't buy these ties they just came on the car.

They came stock on my car and I didn't find them noisier than any other high performance tire. When worn, both the PSS and the Sport Maxx GT are louder than my PA3 winter tires.

Had them on my 2010. Didn't notice them to be noisy or loud at all. But, I got 21k miles out of them which is way more than I am accustomed to getting on a UHP summer tire. My 2014 has Contis and I'm afraid the treadwear will not be nearly as good as the Dunlops. If we were close , I would trade you. . BTW, check out this survey on Tire rack. Others don't think they are especially noisy http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...ay.jsp?type=MP

I loved the stock dunlops and would buy them again if they weren't much more expensive than the PSS. The noise was negligible and the wear was great. I got something like 30k out of them including 1 year on the autobahn, 4 laps on the Nurburgring, and a track day at summit point with two plugs in the same tire. pretty impressive IMO.

2010 came with them too. I do not know how may miles it had before me but when i purchased the car they were very quiet. I put 5000 miles on them and now they are becoming noisier. Still pretty quiet on the highway though. It looks like 25% life left of them, so i find the noise level expected.

On my second set of them... I really like this tire and don't find them particularly noisy. I'll try something new when my current set wears out

I have dunlops on my oem 18s and loved them for the 3 months I ran them before the PSA on 19" AG M590s.

The dunlops were much more quiet and rode nicer than the 19 PSAs. I'm actually a little annoyed the PSAs are as noisy as they are but I knew I was buying a comp tire so I deal with it. For someone who wants a tire just for cruising, I say the dunlops are great.

Well I continue to be perplexed .... I am almost certain I'm hearing road surface noise from the tires

I have never had tires this noisy before unless I didn't have any tread left.

One thing I noticed tonight...valve stems say N2 on it...I am assuming it has nitrogen gas in it...is nitrogen lighter than air which is 80% O2 and 20% Nitrogen if I recall.

Could this have anything to do with the road noise I am hearing?...the sound is more of a humming sound...this sound is getting really annoying...just changed psi to 39/39 cold.

Do you guys think the Dunlops are a better tire than the Mich PSS? I am really liking the stock Conti's but if either one of those two tires are better gripping, I would definitely make the switch!!

I dont think they are better than PSS as far as performance but I am pretty sure they are much better than the Conti's. I dont think they are very popular as a replacement because I believe the size for our cars is considered an OEM tire and is VERY expensive compared to the PSS.

No. While the Dunlops are quiet I find them unpredictable and downright scary when cold. Worst tire for grip that I have had on my S4s. For the price you can do much better. They came on the car I am looking forward to replacing them.

They're good tires but heavy and they don't wear well. Run them until they're worn out then replace with PSS

Wow, not my experience at all. I found them to work very well in cold and wet conditions.

I also found them to be fine in cold and wet conditions. My car came with these Dunlop tires from the factory. I'd even tracked and autox'ed on them before, and thought they were ok. Then I switched to Yokohama Neova AD-08 tires. Those were fantastic. Dry grip is like no other high performance street tires. Wet grip (when new) was awesome, no sign of hydroplaning at all. However, they were very noisy, and worn out fast. Now I'm on Bridgestone Potenza S-04. Great tire for the price. They're quiet and ride great. Dry and wet grips are very well for street driving. I haven't tracked these tires yet, so I don't know the ultimate dry grip.

Haha, it could very well be that I am getting bitter with them since they are at 4/32 now and getting near replacement time. I have 28k on these so they are a bit tired, but they have never blown me away and at ~300 a tire there are defiantly better options.

ok, was getting some maintenance work done on car today...I asked dealer to look at my tires...since car was CPO, I thought I got 4 new tires but they said fronts were at 60% and rears were new.

They said the humming noise was from tires and it was prob because I am running pressure too high...I set it to 39 all 4 corners cold...when they checked it hot it was 44/42 today...they are recommending 36 psi on all 4 corners.

I thought everyone was running tires 39-40 on all 4 corners for the most part????

Well one thing for sure, these Dunlop SP Maxx's are POS's!...noisiest tires ever....gonna have to go PSS's soon.

My stock Dunlop Sport Maxx GTs are almost to the wear bars and while they are slightly noisier than new, they aren't bad at all even now. Some of the best factory performance tires I've every had in all around performance. I have S-04s sitting in the garage to be installed very soon.

You don't really think +/- 1 or 2 lbs of tire pressure is going to change anything do you? Maybe you have some bearing issue. Mine sounds a little weird too since I put summers back on. I have 30,000 miles. Sounds like similar sound to yours.

Agreed, thats probably why they come standard on the SL65 AMG Black Series. Great tire but I'd like to see what the hype behind the PSS is

maybe it is the nitrogen that is overheating tires more quickly and causing pressure to rise too quickly?...I am going to remove nitrogen and go to regular air this weekend to see what that does...and it shouldnt be a bearing problem cause thats why I took the car in last week was to check the bearings...dealer said they were the tires making the noise.

noise is so bad now that if I can't find a fix I will have to go to PSS's right now.

ok, I made this video for the new exhaust but you can hardly hear anything due to road noise from these noisy tires.

Do you guys think these tires are excessively noisy?..I think these are the noisiest tires I have ever had and think they are faulty.

2nd video is with same camera and same roads on M3 with Michelin Pilot Sports...big difference in road noise imho.

also, when I got my springs and exhaust installed last week, I had had indy shop look at the bearings and they too thought road noise was pretty obvious but confirmed it was tires rather than bad bearings, just like the dealership said.

Only times I have ever had probs with tires are when dealerships puts on new ones for free whether from free tire replacement prog or from car being CPO...they must get great deals on these tires(probably blemished) hence handing them out for free...happened with my MDX too when they put on new Falkens, made them swap out to Michelins.

That's wind noise, not road noise. Probably due to the placement of the camera. Not really comparable to the M3 video which has much less wind noise with the camera mounted further toward the middle of the rear bumper and higher.

I chewed mine in 10k miles, never again, very pleased with my Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s. Maibe it is just me, but I have to see everyone as tiny dots in the mirror at takeoff from red light, and find reaching the opposite cars before they even started across the white line especially thrilling, not to mention the insanity on the twisties on "the long way home" in my rural hilly area:)

BTW the S5 wheels with the more aggressive offset and 245-35-19 rubbers (I am not redoing my fenders and potholes galore) make it even more fun.

ok, for some follow up....just replaced these tires with Michelin PSS's yesterday and the Dunlops are definitely noisy compared to the PSS's....they are a lot stiffer also...PSS makes car feel modestly lighter but steering feel is a noticeably lighter now also, which I wasn't expecting.

My exhaust sounds a lot louder now given less tire noise.

I like the Dunlops so much I pulled them off my A4 Titanium and swapped them with the NEW Contis that came stock on the S4 even though I had 10k on the Dunlops. Nearly 10k later and they're still good. I'm pretty fond of them. Not sure why you have/had noise with yours. I'll be putting on my 3rd set when these finally go in another 5-10k. I got 30k out of my first set on the B8 A4.
