Question Changing fuel filter - required to bleed the system

Of course I don't have the VAG 1318 fuel pressure gauge with shut-off valve VAG 1318/21 and catch resevoir VAS 5226 - Bentley says to bleed the fuel system after changing the fuel filter. Does this mean I can't change my own fuel filter any more?

I've replace mine three times and never used a VAG tool to bleed the fuel system. Replace the filter. Turn the key on, wait a couple of seconds, turn the key off. Repeat three or four times. Depress the shrader valve on the back of the fuel rail to "burp" the air out. Car should start and run normally. Or just replace the filter and crank it for a few extra seconds as you bleed the air through the injectors.

Im doing my fuel filter and pump this weekend.

She has been whining fro a few months now, and I have been waiting for it to warm up a bit to do it.
    Looks pretty straight forward.

did mine a few months back. I replaced the filter but didn't bleed the system, it took about a minute of cranking to finally fire up.

I miss being returnless fuel. Since going with a B5 rail and using my evap line as a fuel return, I need to pull the fuel pump fuse to depressurize the system or I get fuel everywhere

You'll get a check engine light if you don't burp the air. The system will say that it is too lean. You can delete the code using Vagcom or a generic OBD reader.

Just so you don't freak out!

All I've ever done is cycle the ignition a few times before I start it to prime the pump. Then let it idle for a couple minutes. I've never gotten a cel.

I didn't do anything besides replace the filter, turn the key a few times without trying to start it (as OG described above), and then start it...I was scared of this job just because it's fuel related (and you WILL have some spill/drip), but just make sure you have goggles and several rags. I used a pie pan lined with rags to serve as a drip pan. Leave the caps on the other end of the replacement filter while you work on the first side. Be patient with the clips. No smoking!

Do the filter first. Mine was whining and I replaced the filter first. It worked out just fine for me. Just a thought to save you a fuel pump and some $$

If you do end up replacing the pump this may be worth a read: Clicky click
