I own a 2008 S6, purchased with about 65,000 miles about 1 year ago. Currently sitting at 72,000 miles. I paid $26,400 just to give you an idea on pricing. These cars are somewhat hard to find but even harder to sell for dealers. It's a sleeper car in that it was not highly sought after new and even less sought after used, the C6 S6 just isnt on most people's buying radar. Heck, my S6 that I test drove was only the 2nd C6 S6 that I'd ever seen and for the past year, I've yet to see another one on the road.
I can get 20mpg highway if I try really hard haha. It's a very heavy car so unlike a normal car where you can let off the accelerator and coast for awhile, as soon as you let off the accelerator your speed will decrease quite noticeably. I'm able to average 20mpg on the highway if I hit all ideal conditions - some downhill, stay around 60mph,etc. Just maintaining 60mph on a level and straight section of freeway shows a reading of around 21 if I remember correctly. However apply an marginal amount of acceleration and that immediately drops to a reading of 13-14mpg.
In city driving I average about 12mpg - I'm talking stop sign to stop sign, traffic light to traffic light. My avg mph shows around 10mph and I still avg 12mpg. And I'm not driving grandma style either, I'm usually trying to get to the head of the pack so I can make the next timed light etc. That's pretty impressive to me considering I had a 2008 Acura TL Type S (286hp) that only averaged 13mpg in the same daily commute.
Maintenance wise, I've been extremely pleased. When I bought my S6, the car had not moved in 2+ months from the dealer lot. On my drive home that day, CEL went off. Over the course of the next 2 weeks I had several recurring CELs which were 3 different coil packs gone bad and one O2 sensor. All were replaced free of charge and since then I have had zero issues. My windshield wiper fluid sensor just recently started going haywire - comes on every start and stays lit on my gauge screen. Other than that, extremely happy with the purchase.
If you do purchase - I highly recommend removing the rear resonators. It's an amazing sounding engine and exhaust but the interior is pretty well sound proofed. Removing the rear resonators gives it just enough noise for me to be able to hear the exhaust note without it being too intrusive. I bought the car for the V10 so I sure as heck want to reap the audible benefits =)
I had a 2004 G35 and test drove a 2012 IPL G37, they are fun cars but the torque/engine/exhaust you get with the S6 brings me much more enjoyment. Haven't had the pleasure of trying any S4's but so can't speak on there behalf. But I can say that I love my S6, it may not be the fastest car but that torque sure makes it feel that way.
Let me know if you have any other questions about the car.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
