    Get a C6 S6 for daily?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Guys,

So - here I am looking for some more excitement out of my 70 mile round trip commute. I have had a stage 3 A6 before, a 911, and now drive a POS $500 VW Cabrio each and every day that kills me.

I am looking for a daily with some comfort and power. I'd like for it to be comfy - but also have some power when desired. I have been considering the following:
    1. Infiniti G37xS
    2. Audi S4 (B5 Wagon)
    3. Audi S4 (B6 Wagon)

and all of a sudden I thought about the S6 today. The prices for these things are now reasonable and you can find a deal for $22-25K with ~60K miles. I know they are very comfortable cars, and the V10's require a bit more maintenance then any typical car - but I am pretty used on doing maintenance on father's Cayenne S and am pretty sure I could manage this.

Lastly - I need an AWD… I don't mind older cars (i.e. B5 S4). Would prefer decent MPG --- I don't need 30's but middle-ish 20's would be nice on the highway. If I keep off that gas pedal and cruise control to work - would I be able to achieve some decent MPG?

Look forward to hearing and thanks in advance.

Have you read through the following thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...king-for-an-S6

Getting mid-20s on the hwy is possible, but be prepared to spend big $$ for maintenance.

Nope, mid 20s on the highway is in no way possible and if your computer says it gets that its lying. In 10,000 miles on my well maintained and working S6 I never broke 19mpg real and averaged 12.5mpg.

Agree w @IanCH, i do city/highway daily about 60mi round trip, if no traffic I am always around 17-18mpg door to door. Highway alone maybe 19 or so, but then bring it down with stop & go at lights in the city.

W that said, its my daily driver, its great... comfy when cruising along, with plenty of power at your disposal if you want to take it up a notch... maintenance has been a big deal though, I will say that, I finally bought an extended warranty for peace of mind --- if you can do your own fixes then I'd highly recommend the car... Later in this thread will be a number of people telling you to buy an A6 to mod it to hit S6-like performance which certainly makes sense, just to add that to your buying list

The C6 S6 is getting 'affordable' now because everyone is trying to dump them on an unsuspecting buyer. If you have deep pockets, a lot of patience and don't mind the S6 being in the shop often, then by all means... take the plunge.

You seem like you've been around the block with modding, so look at any of Audi's lineup with the 3.0T... A6, A7, Q5, S4. A stage 2+ 3.0T will put you in the 12's on just about every platform with 91 octane.
Kenny is a member here who did a 12.6 in his stage 2+ A6. I believe it is a 2009 or 2010. Stage 2 is simply an ECU tune and a pulley for the supercharger. Simple.

now… what about a B7 RS4? Is the fuel economy really better on an RS4 then the S4? Or is this just a rumor?

    Thanks!

RS4 is a GREAT car, but NOT for fuel economy. You'll be getting about the same as you would for an S6, if not WORSE! The only way you will get into the 20s will be if you are going down hill ;) What model S4 are you comparing it to, since the B8 S4 can certainly give you far better mpg...obviously dependent upon how heavy a right foot you have.

A tuned 3.0T A6 will beat the V10 S6 and get better gas mileage, while being MUCH more reliable. The 3.0T is basically bulletproof whereas the V10 can sometimes be a money pit. The sound of the V10 with an exhaust is intoxicating, but that's about the only advantage.

The RS4 can get 20 highway... But not if you're driving it how it's supposed to be driven Fuelly.com is a good resource for real-world mileage. People track their fill-ups, and Fuelly can pool everyones results to give an average for a make/model

I own a 2008 S6, purchased with about 65,000 miles about 1 year ago. Currently sitting at 72,000 miles. I paid $26,400 just to give you an idea on pricing. These cars are somewhat hard to find but even harder to sell for dealers. It's a sleeper car in that it was not highly sought after new and even less sought after used, the C6 S6 just isnt on most people's buying radar. Heck, my S6 that I test drove was only the 2nd C6 S6 that I'd ever seen and for the past year, I've yet to see another one on the road.

I can get 20mpg highway if I try really hard haha. It's a very heavy car so unlike a normal car where you can let off the accelerator and coast for awhile, as soon as you let off the accelerator your speed will decrease quite noticeably. I'm able to average 20mpg on the highway if I hit all ideal conditions - some downhill, stay around 60mph,etc. Just maintaining 60mph on a level and straight section of freeway shows a reading of around 21 if I remember correctly. However apply an marginal amount of acceleration and that immediately drops to a reading of 13-14mpg.

In city driving I average about 12mpg - I'm talking stop sign to stop sign, traffic light to traffic light. My avg mph shows around 10mph and I still avg 12mpg. And I'm not driving grandma style either, I'm usually trying to get to the head of the pack so I can make the next timed light etc. That's pretty impressive to me considering I had a 2008 Acura TL Type S (286hp) that only averaged 13mpg in the same daily commute.

Maintenance wise, I've been extremely pleased. When I bought my S6, the car had not moved in 2+ months from the dealer lot. On my drive home that day, CEL went off. Over the course of the next 2 weeks I had several recurring CELs which were 3 different coil packs gone bad and one O2 sensor. All were replaced free of charge and since then I have had zero issues. My windshield wiper fluid sensor just recently started going haywire - comes on every start and stays lit on my gauge screen. Other than that, extremely happy with the purchase.

If you do purchase - I highly recommend removing the rear resonators. It's an amazing sounding engine and exhaust but the interior is pretty well sound proofed. Removing the rear resonators gives it just enough noise for me to be able to hear the exhaust note without it being too intrusive. I bought the car for the V10 so I sure as heck want to reap the audible benefits =)

I had a 2004 G35 and test drove a 2012 IPL G37, they are fun cars but the torque/engine/exhaust you get with the S6 brings me much more enjoyment. Haven't had the pleasure of trying any S4's but so can't speak on there behalf. But I can say that I love my S6, it may not be the fastest car but that torque sure makes it feel that way.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the car.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Old thread, but I just picked up my 07' S6 last month in Portland. Drove it home to Seattle (filled when I left, and filled up when I got home) and got 22.7 mpg despite hitting stop and go traffic for 45 minutes through Tacoma.

Getting 13-15.5 commuting to work daily/mixed driving now. This is on a 100k mile car that really needs the carbon cleaned out :)
