wheel bearings covered under extended powertrain warranty?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,

Wheel bearing went and car is at the dealership. I currently have 68,000 miles on it so my warranty is up, however I have an extended powertrain warranty from the water pump.

My service rep is telling me that wheel bearings aren't covered under the extended powertrain warranty, but things like CV joints are.

    Anyone know the answer?

Wheel bearings are a suspension part.

I would not expect wheel bearings to be covered. That's a wear and tear item. I'm surprised he said CV joints would be though...

My car is at the dealership now for that exact same reason, third party warranty covered it, no questions asked.

edit: I have 87k and the work is being done at IRA Audi

edit X2: I do have a bumper to bumper warranty

It will depend on the warranty inclusions / exclusions but I doubt a powertrain-only warranty would cover something like wheel bearings (and surprised it would cover CV joints).

"Jet Engine" noise coming from left front transaxle area...

I've had this whirring noise for the past 4K miles, like a jet engine, changing octaves with the change in speed. I thought it was the snow tires wearing out, snows on dedicated rims. Today I put on fresh summer tires mounted to OEM rims and the noise is still there. 68K miles on the car. Could this be wheel bearings? If so, should all wheel bearings be done at once? What am I looking at for cost? Thanks for your responses.

Sounds like wheels bearings. My fronts went out at about your mileage. I did one side then the other side went likt 2k miles later, do them both.

When the hub is toast it's unmistakable. Both my fronts went in 6 weeks and when one started to go it was screaming in less than 300 miles. I am pathetically analysis though.... After that I didn't feel like it got any louder. I did feel like there was more vibration in the steering wheel. You should be able to tell which side it's coming coming front unless both are cooked. I was lucky both went on both sides of 49k. I didn't pay too much attention to the warranty sheet when I signed but I'm pretty sure it was $588 at Westwood audi here in MA when my passenger front was done last week.

I'm not sure when my rear bearings will go but I will replace those myself now that I only have 300 miles to no warranty....

Has anyone had to replace their rear bearings? I've never had them go in a car before but my backs are sounding like my fronts did and of course I now have 52k miles Hoping this is something I can do myself...

Who charged you 725 for the bearing? I'm certain that it's at least 200 cheaper online for oem audi.

Edit: go to genuine audi parts, look up the bearing, they are about 200 bucks. Go back to where ever you had this done and rip them a new one. Threaten legal action, then never go back there.

Is install fairly straightforward? $200 is more like it. Nearly crapped myself when I saw 7 bills.

Had mine go a few weeks ago. That annoying hum took over the cabin, even with music on.

Bought car CPO'd at 63k(39k miles) and it had gone at 70k(43k miles) - was under the assumption this would be part of the CPO check? Anywho, it was the passenger side front. Now just waiting for the driver side and both rears to go. Hopefully before the original warranty has commenced.

Thanks for the heads up Ian. I checked my bill. They charged me 360 for part and 3.5 hours for install.

Seems generous no doubt. When the fourth goes I am definitely buying the part my self and going to my local shop. This is the first time I am doing non warranty work so lesson learned!

LOL, I just picked my car up yesterday after having the 2 fronts done (under warranty) at Herb Chambers, car only has 35k miles on it (bought it CPO at 19k miles). I've never had bearings go that quickly in any other car.
