Strange 'metallic' jiggle / rattle coming from front driver wheel and back pass wheel

The first sound is coming from the back passenger side/wheel. I first noticed this noise when I have my passenger side windows open, and I'm driving on a street with cars parked on the passenger side or a dividing wall. I think only then the noise gets bounced back and I can hear it. It's coming from the back passenger wheel well (I've had a friend drive the car while I sat on the back passenger side peering out the window), and it sounds like a jiggle / light rattle, as if you had tinfoil being crumpled, or maybe a light mesh chain grill shaking. It only happens when I go over bumps on the road.

The second sound is coming from the front wheel well, and that one I can hear with the windows closed, and in the cabin. It's more of a rattle, with a slight metallic tone; I thought it could be the belly pan that isn't fully attached - the oil change guys may not have put it back properly, but at the same time the slight metallic sound doesn't seem like it would be from that plastic part.

    Any ideas?

I'll put money on a loose brake pad. Either the pad has come apart or the little tabs need to put pulled apart a little more where it locks into the caliper piston.

As far as the rear noise, check the suspension components. I had a similar issue where the pinch bolt for my rear shocks became loose and started making a noise

    Could be a wheel bearing.

Front noise: loose heat shield over cat or axle?

Rear noise: loose exhaust hanger or brake dust shield for bent is rubbing on something?

That was my first thought too. I would double check the brake pads are snug and apply some CRC Brake Quiet to the backs of the pads just in case.

It could also be a caliper retaining bolt or slider pin that is loose in which case you want to sort that out ASAP!

I think my caliper bolt is worn down...I get a random vibration from time to time when I let off the gas.

Thanks fellas, I'm dedicating some time tomorrow to do some work on my car (window regulator replacement) and I'll put the car up and check things out.

Welllllllll..... As it turned out, it rained today so I couldn't look at the car like I had hoped.

I had to drive on the freeway and I'm hearing the front wheel noise louder until I hear a clunk and I look on my mirror and I see a piece flying off the car. I'm 8 miles from my destination thinking I can check it when I arrive, when my ABS light goes on. I step on the brakes and realize I need to step on them all the way down to get grip, luckily traffic is light and nobody in front of me. I merge out of the freeway and pull over. You guessed: my front driver caliper is hanging dangling behind the wheel. I'm typing this as I'm waiting on a tow truck to get me to my destination.

Quick question, should I assume the brake line may be damaged and leaking brake fluid since the caliper is dangling?

Would I be able to get new pads and clips and put the whole thing together back (and triple check shit is tightened up) so at least I can drive it to my usual mechanic or it's just unsafe to drive at this point?

    Shit got lucky.

I would definitely assume the line to be damaged.
So was it the caliper slide bolts that came loose or the caliper carrier bolts? Have you done any work on your brakes recently? If that happened after you recently did something to your brakes than for your safety (and the rest of us) I advise you have the car towed to a shop...No offence.

It is being towed as I type this. And there is leakage, I'm just going to have it taken care by a professional come Monday.

for the rear metallic noise press your brake slightly and see if it still makes it, it is probably the backing of the pad not glued to the caliper. For the front check the bushing on the sway bar link to rule that out. Get under your car to be sure it's not the belly pan.

So I replaced the back rotors and brakes and the noise is gone, so I'm thinking it was the shims on the brake pads. Thanks everybody.

Coming in on this thread 10 years later. I had a metallic jingling sound that could only be heard at low speeds and it was not constant and could not be reproduced. Changed front and rear wheel bearings and brakes. Luckily these needed to be done anyway but they were not the cause. It turns out that the backup nut from the valve stem had come loose and was rolling around inside the wheel between the rim and tyre. Took it to a tyre shop when we realized that the noise was in the wheel itself. They removed the tyre, found the nut and reinstalled it. Noise gone.
