How do you dispose of your cars fluids? (properly and legally)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm wondering what everyone does with the vehicles fluids when they flush their systems. I know my local auto zone will take motor oil without a problem but I'm curious about all other fluids. Power steering, coolant, transmission, rear diff, brake and blinker fluids? Where do you go to dump them?

My auto zone takes it all besides coolant In the same tank. Call a junk yard for the best answer.

I take the oil to Auto Zone or O'Reilly's. Everything else goes to the local hazardous waste recycling center.

Well, except for the blinker fluid. I use that to make a killer martini!

^^^yep I do the same I just mix everything and dump at autozone or advance autoparts, they don't even ask just tell me to go on the back and dump it my self, maybe because they don't want to get dirty. Plus transmission a diff oil is almost the same as engine. And powersteering to me is also oil.

I'm with everyone else. I just put it all in old containers, and take it to advance auto. They don't care what you dump in the tank, as long as its a liquid. I did make the mistake of dumping all my fluids in a 5gal bucket, and left it outside without a lid overnight. When I was dumping it into their container, and small rat had apparently tried to go for a swim, and committed suicide.

My 1.8 burns so much oil that I never have to change it.

I take everything to my local recycling / household hazardous waste depot. You guys shouldn't mix your fluids. Most of it can be recycled including engine oil. There are companies that re-refine the oil.

Try the local auto parts store first, and if they don't take it, look for a disposal program for your local county/township. It depends on where you live on if local parts stores or shops will take the fluids or not, but they'd be the best place to check first.

I don't see any problem with mixing petroleum based fluids like oil, trans, diff fluid, ATF, even PS fluid and brake fluid. In fact I think the only thing I separate out is coolant, which has been collecting in old windshield washer fluid bottles on my shelves for years. it's hard to get rid of that stuff except on recycle days. Autozone etc all just dump it in the same tank anyway, and let the refiner sort it out. I just keep it all in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and dump it when full.

OP, if you ever go to the track they have recycle tanks for all types of fluids including coolant.
