    Oil in PCV Valve

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

I got a new PCV valve today and was installing it sometime ago. Upon removal of the old PCV valve, it had some noticeable amount of fresh oil in it as you can see in the picture below.
I know PCV is exposed to oil vapors when the engine is running, but is this much oil normal in a PCV? Or is this indication of some other problem in the PCV system, like a bad bleeder valve?

    Car is 98 1.8T AEB.

Give the pipe that heads back to the block a good clean and check in a few days. Oil looked black to me. Its most likely built up of oil over time. I actually remove the metal pipe and replaced it with a hose. I am also going to do some of this.

    And install a catch can.

How long has it been since the pcv in the photos was last checked/changed? Do you have sludge issues?

Tbh, I have never checked the PCV valve in four year ownership of my car. I think this is the factory fitted PCV valve as I have almost every single record of work done on this car from the beginning(Thanks to the two previous owners). Car now has 250k miles Even though I never inspected the valve visibly, I have been checking the PCV system regularly(say every 3 months or so)with the help of Walky_talky and this video below.

The reason why I replaced the PCV valve now is because car is having some idle fluctuations lately and this was considered to be a cheap fix to throw a new PCV valve. But I found out yesterday that the the PCV bleeder valve housing has got a crack in the middle and is probably causing the idle fluctuations and slight increase in oil consumption. So I am gonna replace everything there under the intake manifold considering they are 16+ years old and has 250k miles. Car has no sludge issues, runs normal and quite.. thankfully!

I found this video and the guy very helpful in explaining how to diagnose the PCV system..

And this is how the original PCV valve looked after 250k miles, the diaphragm was still holding the vacuum but I think it sticks too much to the rear cover..probably because of age..

Most guys with decent sized turbos are running catch cans or just dumping it to the atmosphere, which is what I recommend.

Oil in their is normal. It does vent oil fumes from the crankcase after all.

Yes thats what I m thinking to run a catch can, but can not decide if I want to reuse the PVR or bypass it and vent back to the TIP or vent in the atmosphere,
