which oil extractor should i buy?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
looking into getting an oil extractor to do easy oil changes. I have found a few on Amazon and am wondering if anyone has any experience with them (since i don't).

which do you have? or which would you buy? and why?

    Thanks!

seems to me the 1st is the best/cheapest option that doesn't look to janky, but the 2nd looks a little more solid.

That's about a one hour+ oil change. I almost went with that one, but opted for the Mityvac because it seemed to be more popular. I just ordered it a couple of days ago and haven't received it yet, but as soon as I do, I'm gonna put it to the test.

Based on 291+ reviews, it appears to be a solid purchase as long as you properly clean it after each use.

edit: It was waiting for me when I got home. Pretty fast shipping!

Yeah I was a little disappointed with the time, but at least you're not working the whole time. I just started it and let it do it's thing, periodically checking on it. Next time I may pump more during the process to keep the vacuum good.

If I had to do it over again, I'd prob buy a different model.

i got one from harborfreight. it was 120$ or something. plug it to air compresor and it will suck your oil in 2-3min. just make sure to warm your car before.

I picked up the hydro turf more than two years ago, and have been very happy with it. 5 or 6 uses so far: my extraction rate is better than AWD lover; the whole routine takes less than a half hour. Be sure to remove your fill cap , or it'll be difficult to create the suction needed.

I heard good and bad thing about those mityvac. Many say that the oil seal leak after a couple of use. Don't know if they were changing the oil hot or cold. It is made of plastic.

If you have an air compressor I recommend this one from HF.
    http://www.harborfreight.com/6-1-4-q...l#.Ux-g79yDpuY

I use this for several years now to change all my cars. Over 100 oil change and counting and still working like I first bought it. Just set the compressor to 19-20 psi and you'll be done in 10-15 minutes. Then just take the tank to the oil recycling. No messy clean up.

I hate oil extractors. I've had so many issues. Never used a pneumatic extractor, but if I did it again, that's what I'd go with.

I have a fumitomo valve and absolutely love it.

    I second Thomas' comment.

My MityVac 7201 has given me nothing but problems since I bought it. Never knew about the harbor freight one but having done a little research after posted I think I would go with that one next....

I warmed up the car and had the oil cap off. I think next time I just need to pump more throughout the process....

If you look at the reviews on amazon, slow extraction rate is the main complaint you see about the hydro turf (that and the fact the pump doesn't screw onto the base)

I say save your money and put it into something else, change your oil from the bottom. Takes me 30mins top! plus while your under the car you can do a visual inspection of everything you cant see from the top. You buy this oil extracter, now how often are you gonnna get under the car and take a look? once a year maybe?

Just used my Mityvac 7300 for the first time Sunday. Loved it. Took maybe 15 minutes to remove all the oil. If it will save me from crawling around a cold garage floor I am all for it.

Note - at first it seemed like it was a little shy of extracting all the oil based on the level in the canister. As soon as I removed the oil filter and moved the hose slightly I got probably another half a quart out. I did have the oil cap off but I don't know if I still broke some sort of vacuum when I took the filter off but in the end I was happy to get what appeared to be all the oil out.

i have a Pela 6000, it looks just like the first 2 links you posted, holds 5 qts and is perfect for the 2.0T, no need for the big ones those are for the V6's.

i've had mine for 2 years now, and in that time used it like maybe 6 times or so already, last time being my last oil change 2-3 months ago. still works great and i got it for $60 online, great value and already made up for itself in oil change costs. stores away in a nice small box and easy to clean and everything, had no issues with it and its worked for me each time and got everything out properly. the bigger ones might just be quicker to pump, but its not a huge difference i'd say and still a great value.

Are you guys sure you're getting all the oil? Did you guy know there are a little more trap in where you screw in the filter? There is a spring in the center and if remove you can suck almost another quarter + another opening right above it.

when i do it i get all 5 quarts in the container, i'm assuming thats the capacity so it has to be all, i'm sure theres some left around the sides of the pan but its prob even there when you drain through the bottom anyway. i actually get like 4-4.5 quarts into the extractor because i do wait until the 1qt gets burned and do the oil change then (used to burn 1qt/1500 miles, but fixed now).

also when i extract i do it in different spots, when you push the pump hose through the dipstick hole into the pan you can feel it get 'stuck' at different spots, so i'm guessing those are the different surfaces and i make sure to get it all from each area until i hear that 'slurp' empty sound. i had a friend who works at the dealer do an oil change for me there recently and they also pump it out the top most of the time at the dealership because its so much quicker and i haven't heard anything bad about anyone who does pump it out rather than the traditional oil pan draining. also i dont like draining my oil pan because most times i get that done i end up with a slightly stripped drain bolt and hate dealing with leaky ones.

I agree go Fumoto.....if I didn't have to get under the car to change my A4 B7 oil filter I'd go with the extractor.....but since I do...forget it. Opening the valve or removing a plug every 7k miles.....not worth the pain of having to clean it out since the syn oil will destroy the seals.

Ended up getting this oil extractor, it came in last night (prime said it would come today or monday, it was overnighted, got to love amazon prime).

I'll do a quick review for everyone out there, looking forward to quick and easy oil changes!

Mine looks just like the Mityvac you guys linked.
I got mine from Griots many years ago- it says it's patented on hte sticker, so maybe they are all the same.
    http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...Fe87MgodWVYAmQ

I've used the extractor on all my vehicles going on... 10+ years!

    edit:
upon closer inspection, the Mityvac 7400 and Griots Garage vac are different.

Mine (GG) has a metal pressure relief valve and metal screws visible. The details are slightly different.
ALso notice the Amazon review of the Mityvac said it is not compatible with synthetic oils. ?? which is odd

I know my GG vac has no issue w/ syn oils (basically all I use is M1 and Delo)

    vid i found

Should i remove the oil cap and oil filter before pumping the Mytivac? (I have the Mytivac 7400). Also, I just came back from about a 1 hour drive. Should I wait a few minutes before attempting to remove the oil because the manufacturer says not to use it if oil temp exceeds 175 degrees F, and I have no way of telling how hot the oil is.

I use the pneumatic extractor but it should be the same. Remove both oil cap and filter for better circulation. As for the oil temp wait until you can hold your oil filter with your bare hand for 15-20 sec.

I'm not sure I follow you. You're talking about releasing oil from a check valve under the filter? If so, I'd rather leave dirty oil in there, than have no oil at all for the few moments after starting the engine the next time.

Will the oil drip back into the car when removing the filter? I don't wanna make a mess.

Remove your oil cap first, get your pump going for a few minute and take your filter out. No mess.

Thanks man. I'm literally in the middle of this. The oil extractor only removed a little more than 3.4 liters. Is that correct or should there be more. Before the oil change I used the dip stick to measure the oil level and it was about 3/4 full. I also checked my AMI and it showed the same level. Don't our cars hold 4.9 liters of oil?

Move your tube around and you should be able to get more. It's best if your car is in a forward incline. Flat ground will not get all from the pan. If you can jack up the rear a little to allow all the oil to flow toward the front.

Looks like I'ma have to jack the car from the rear. I used a level to see if my garage floor was level, and it looks like it's a bit off. Either way, about how much should I extract?

    4-5 quarts. Should be about 4 quarts + (% of oil on MMI/Dipstick * 1 quart)

I did a little math and it makes sense. The dip stick and AMI read 3/4 full. I extracted 3.4L, which is exactly how much 75% of 4.6L is. Our Audis carry 4.6L (4.9qt) of oil. I got all my oil out even after jacking the rear.

That all depend. I alway extract about 4-4.5 but my oil level is away 1/2-1/4 qt low every time I change my oil. You won't be able to get all of it out. There are some in your turbo that you won't be able to get out. There's also some under the spring valve where you screw in your filter. I do not know the suction of your extractor. Mine I can control the psi on my air compressor to get stronger suction.

The dipstick/MMI is for 1 quart only, not the whole amount of oil in your engine...

If the dipstick/MMI reading is at 0%, then you should have about 4 quarts in your engine.

Every time I used my extractor, I thought I was finished, but when I checked to be sure by removing the drain plug, I always got out a lot more....which is why I stopped using mine.

I'm gonna do the incline method next time to see if I get more out of it. Jacking up the car didn't get my anything.
