    Locked keys in my trunk...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everybody.

I just bought a audi a4 2003 quattro last weekend. They gave me only one pair of keys. I get off work at 2 AM yesterday, and was super tired. I opened my trunk by pilot, put my tools in, changed shoes and closed it... With my keys inside. :/

My friend called AAA, and some very mean guy came, he said he don't know anything about audis, and he's exhausted after working 14 hours, and left after few minutes of telling me stories about deadlocking the car if he tries to do anything, and that there is no trunk latch. Well I was on my company parking, and security guard gave me a flashlight, and we found out that there is a latch on the door. But I wonder if it's going to work in this case.

If they use that baloon to make a small opening in the window, and use that small latch, is it actually going to open the trunk? Also on the back sit I found out that there is some way to open one of the sits, but I don't know if its not locked. The key is set horizontal if you head forward to the windshield.

I was reading some posts on this and some other forums that triple AAA actually should know how to help me. Well this guy didn't. What are my ways out of this situation? I call some locksmith or what? Car wasn't bought in audi dealership, so if i call one of those, are they able to help me anyway?

    Matt.

you can call a dealer and see if they'll cut a key for you, you'll probably need your registration or some other proof of ownership... you can use the key to open the trunk

or call safelite or other glass company, when they come to replace the windshield, smash it and gain access. windshields are (relatively) cheap to replace.

Well but keys are in the trunk, why would I want to smash the windshield?

after windshield is smashed, you can open a front door, and gain access to the trunk by folding the rear seatbacks forward. Windshield is at most $250. (assuming you're in the continental USA) be aware that your rear seats might be locked as well :( have you ever folded them forward?

maybe you can find a locksmith with the key blanks (no electronic fob needed to unlock trunk) who can cut a key based on your VIN?

you can fold down the seats and get into the trunk....

use this as a reason to put a new fresh windshield in. I know my glass is pitted to all hell and hard to see out of sometimes.

Isn't breaking windshield going to deadlock the car? Also, couldn't they open doors by that balloon thing, and then press unlock key? Or it's going to set alarm on, and lock the car anyways?

I asked about that, becase I heard that not in every a4 you can enter trunk from your back sits, so I came to this forum to get some info.

I will most likely call a locksmith, since they wanted to charge me only 135 dollars, not over 250 + trouble of replacing the windshield.

I just thought there is easier/cheaper way.

Im not sure how easy it is to budge these doors open. Usually its not a big deal. Also, removing the windshield really shouldnt effect anything. The only thing holding it on is the seal. Also, Im pretty sure all A4 seats go down. Just look in your rear window to check. Ask around about wedging the door open. I know on previous cars it worked for me, but again, I have no idea with the audi.

my 2003 3.0 doesn't have any intrusion alarms. Maybe on the newer ones?

I just tried opening my locked trunk with just the key (removed the transmitter and left it in the house). trunk opens, the alarm goes beep beep, a few flashing lights.

On my 3.0, the trunk can only be unlocked from inside the car if the trunk key lock is in the correct orientation (perpindicular) and only if the key fob remote was used to unlock the car.

If I sit in the car, lock it, then unlock one of the doors from the inside, the trunk button on the driver's door does not work.

if you can't get a key cut, better hope your rear seats will fold forward.

Thanks. Just one last question. When does car 'deadlock'? Is it when alarm is on and I open a door?

not sure what you mean by 'deadlock'.

I assume if you unlock the car with your recovered keys in a reasonable amount of time (1 minute? 2 minutes? 10minutes?) you'll have no problems.

I've had my alarm go off for many minutes while on ferries... the yaw sensors notice the car spinning (when the ferry does its turns leaving/approaching the docks) and assumes the car is being stoled.

Well, that AAA guy told me that if alarm goes on, and he tries to open doors, all doors will lock both from inside and outside. Thats what confused me.

Oh, is anyone who has same car as mine can tell me in what position key hole must be turned on the back sit, to make it open? So i can tell if it's open or closed. :)

the slot on mine is perpendicular to the length of the car, parallel with the width and they are always unlocked. You can always remove the ski sack in the drop down and fish something in the trunk to get to the keys

If you can't get the seats down there's a release latch for kidnapped people in the trunk that you can get to from the center armrest. The center hatch opens from the trunk but that's easily broken off its latch and cheaper than a window or whatnot.

Unless he has freakishly long arms he wont be able to get to the latch if the seats won't go down.

not all A4s have access to the trunk via the rear seat armrest

Look from outside your rear window, these are the seat locks UNLOCKED:

    LOCKED:

If it's unlocked smash a window and get the key from there. If it's locked and you have the ski storage get in through there:

Cut a hole through the bag and push the rear door out of the way. Depending where the key fob is in the trunk you might not have to cut a hole in the bag.

If you don't have the ski storage then I'm all out of ideas.

Guys. If he finds a way into the car, he can get in the trunk. He can use the trunk release button or unlock all the doors and then use the trunk switch on the lid......

No he won't be able to....go inside your car, lock yourself inside until you hear the "beep" and try to open the trunk without touching the key/fob. You will set off the alarm. If you press the "Unlock" doors button from inside while the car locks nothing happens, same if you pull the "Trunk release" button.

sorry, that plan just wouldn't work on my 3.0. I just tested it (as I described above). trunk won't open by any of the electronic methods (button on the trunk, switch on the driver's door) if the remote keyfob is not used to unlock the car. unlocking the car via the unlock buttons on the doors will not enable trunk unlock.

only mechanically opening it with a key will work. or pulling on the 'kidnappee freedom pull tab' inside the trunk. (shine a flashlight inside the trunk so the glow-in-the-dark handle starts glowing again and makes it easier to locate)

I agree^^ figure out which window is the cheapest to replace and break it(not with your fist).. Make sure you'll be able to get into the trunk with whichever you choose. Don't break that small little sliver window because you will not get in the trunk.

Wouldn't it be cheaper just to call a locks smith to unlock the doors, get the keys out of the trunk and shut off the alarm?

    Don't break anything !!!

When my battery died and I couldn't open my door (even with the key, long story) I called AAA, they came in like 15 min and I'm not kidding you he opened my car in like 30 seconds with tool similar to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMuhKZRWdz0

I would call them again and tell them to send someone else

I went through this same thing just recently. Left my spare keys in the car and lost my regular set. Had AAA come out to use the balloon. Car deadlocked itself within like 1 minute of the alarm going off after the balloon was inserted. Three other places tried the same exact thing but once the car's deadlocked there's nothing you can do without the key fob.

Call a locksmith first. If the locksmith/ AAA can't get in quickly and the car deadlocks itself, your only options are to smash the windshield (Front passanger side window is the cheapest replacement) or tow it to the dealership and have them make a spare key.

Once your car deadlocks itself, all you need to do is retrieve the key from inside your trunk after smashing your window and it'll override it.

Dealerships locally wouldn't cut a key for me - no one does it anymore. They had to call the manufacturer, have it sent over to the dealership (~3-5 business days) AND they would then need to program the fob after it arrived while your car is on the lot. So you'd need your car towed there.

EDIT: Call your local dealership first to see if they have the window in stock. If not, ask them to order it for you BEFORE bashing the window in this way there's no waiting time.

I fortunately ended up finding my keys in the snow a few days later right as I went outside with a hammer to smash it in.

Good luck though. This is the WORST feeling in the world.

Thanks for pictures of rear sit lock. They made me be sure that its unlocked. I called a locksmith to help get in car. He came with some tools. Like a wedge or something like that. He slipped empty balloon alike tool thru driver window, and pumped it a little. It moved lik 3mm maybe and was in middle of window. Then he got another one , and pumped it on the top of the window. It made a bigger opening of around 1,2cm / 0,5inch.

He got this pipe thing, and tried to press unlock button. He pressed it, and doors unlocked for like split second but we couldnt make it on time, and they locked back.

We tried couple times more but unlock button just stopped working. I thought car deadlocked. I was pretty sad and I thought he will be out of ideas, but he had an ace in his sleeve. He said there is a top-secret combination that police use to open a car if there is a kiddnaped person inside. Well i dont know if the story was true or not, but he was pressing buttons on doors, and then we were opening handles in both sides of the driver doors in some sequence and doors just unlocked. It took around 90 seconds, since he told me what we gonna do.

I went in, and thanks to information from you guys i knew that my back sit has access to trunk and i simply grabbed them from inside, and turned alarm off. All costed me 100 bucks, but i believe i could pay around 75 or even less if i was arguing. Nevertheless i was happy about getting my car back, so i didnt mind tipping the guy a little. :) still cheaper than breaking a car, making a new key, or reprogramming it in dealerahip.

    Thanks for your assistance! :D

Now get a spare key cut asap lol even if it won't start the car you can leave it at home and fetch it to unlock the doors if it happens again

It's great that you got into your car without breaking anything but what buttons are you talking about? Am I missing something?

I'm wondering if the locksmith didn't realize that the door handles need to be pulled twice in order to open the door after one hits the unlock button. the alarm led is still flashing on the door after hitting the unlock button, open the door handle twice and the led goes off and door opens.

    This isn't always the case.

You had to pull the door handles twice on my 3.0, but I only need to pull them once on my 1.8T.

I just buy cheap blanks from wholesalecarkeys.net and spend the $20 at the local locksmith to cut it. My b6 came with 2 keys but for my b5s since they have no immo I just bought the cheap flip keys. My dealer said a valet key ordered by vin would have been $80 or something crazy plus the cost to learn the chip in the key to the car which is an hr at $155 an hr

Depends on how cheap you can get key blanks, and how much a local shop will charge to cut them. A hardware store that went out of business by me cut blanks for my B7 FOBs for ~$15/ea. Other places may be more or less expensive.
