Help - A5 manual transmission problems

    2011 a5 2.0t quattro 6 spd manual
    28.5k miles

Was driving from LA to OC the other day when I noticed the car was telling me to switch to 4th gear when I was already in 6th.
Tapped the gas a bit the car began to rev high. I exited the freeway and could smell the clutch buring up..white smoke coming from up under the hood.

When putting the car into first gear..the engine would just rev high and car had barely any power..got it to second and it was able to drive it .5 miles home.

Anyways Audi Roadside came and picked the car up. Now my a5 is sitting at the dealership and they're telling me its going to be about $1500 just to take transmission out and look at it. I called 3 dealership and they all said that the likelihood that its under warranty is pretty slim to none and that I'm probably looking at a $3k - $4k bill for the fix.

I've already been quoted by an independent shop that they'll replace the pressure plate, throwout bearings, flywheel, clutch and everything that i'll probably need for $1547. just wanted to get some advice from anyone who has had a similar experience.

Everything you've mentioned is exactly what happened in my old G35. I was using the clutch peddle to rest my left foot while going up a steel hill (stupid me) and then the clutch slipped and started to smell it and saw small amounts of smoke. After that point, anytime I would go above 1500-2000 RPM, the clutch would slip and the engine would immediately redline. Took it to dealer who wanted ~1000 to open it up and look at it or ~2200 to simply replace it. Took it to a shop to replace it with "OEM-like" parts for 1200. Never had any problems after that. Of course, mine was after about 75k miles and I drove it like it was stolen. Pretty shitty to happen at 28k miles.

Man, that really sucks. Why is not under warranty at 28K?

Clutch is usually under wear and tear, so i doubt the dealer is going to fix it for free. Are you the original owner? If not then there is a good chance the previous owner doesn't know how to drive manual or beat the crap out of it. Anyways, Good luck! Keep us updated.

It's definitely premature. I would call Audi of America and at least have them try to negotiate a cheaper price with the dealer. I had my brakes on my a5 giving me shudder at 14k miles, took it to the dealer and they wanted $600 to replace the brakes and rotors. I called aoa and explained that this was very premature and it should be listed as a defective part. They called the dealer back Andrew managed to get me labor only, parts they would cover for free. Came out to $200 instead of $600.
In your case if they went that way, labor would still be around or more that $1k.
Go with an independent shop, I feel that they always do quality work over the dealer anyway
