Heat shield options for air intakes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,
As with most vehicles, the stock air boxes usually come restrictive with extra resonance systems.

I am looking at simplifying with a smooth pipe and conical filter.

Some of the expensive intakes come with a heat shield for the intake assembly.

I cannot find a separate, resonably priced option to help shield out some of the hotter air from the engine bay.

Do you know of any decent options to install that are not inclusive with an intake product?

Edit: I want a heat shield for any intake option

I'm a little confused... I think you just want a heat shield for the intake, no that odes not exist.

As of now there are no individual heat shields being sold.

Realistically unless you build your own intake there is no need because the stock intake gets air from the front grill which is cold air seperate from the engine bay

    This.

I'll probably pull out the air box once I get a decently priced tube and filter ordered then just take some measurements. Should be able to find some sheet metal and fold a 90deg lip to screw down.

I just picked up an 034 pipe to go with my filter. I will be tinkering with a diy heat shield soon enough

will have this within a week or so

As of right now, I don't think a heat shield is absolutely necessary, but it will complete the look/intake. I'll likely use the bottom bump stops on the factory box to secure into the bottom brace bar, then some rubber trim to seal to hood. Not sure if it will be sturdy enough like that, but I'll have to go from there.

Hahah nice, I love the size of the filter!

From a fluid dynamics point of view, there should be some improvement from increase flux (conical filter design), smoother/straighter passage (like your 034 tube), and more controlled air properties like density and temp (from heat shield).

I like the idea of a 034 or something tube, an injen/K&N/etc. cone filter, and a fabbed divider (still thinking about what type of material would be best, sheet metal is just easy to work with).

The Roc-euro looks nice, clean, and is probably the best option right now. But, the cost just isn't justified for myself.

exactly my problem. there is an injen in classifieds for 160ish, IIRC. pretty decent deal.

I spent 50 on the tube, 25 on the filter, and 10 on a breather filter. so for under 100 bucks I got a pretty decent set-up. Obviously, many would argue I should just spend a little more and be done with it, but I enjoy this shit. makes for a great project on the weekend.

The injen has the pipe and cone filter already, obviously, the air box shield wouldn't be used if you're trying to get that open box design.

Oh, another thing, I'm not using the shroud that covers the empty space between grille and engine bay. With air not having to be redirected upwards under the flap to enter/hit the intake, I'm pretty sure it is allowing more air flow into the bay. I also covered those whole on the intake inlet shoot, don't know if it has much effect, but whatever. lol

The shroud definitely makes for a cleaner looking engine bay, but I don't care much.

Post up what your current set up looks like. I most likely will be converting my injen into a cold air set up with an extension tube soon

I think if you can make a longer CAI, it could potentially be the nicest sounding intake option. All the products i've seen are either the box or short ram design for the S4, but the harmonics created from the longer tube for CAI is typically phenomenal on other vehicles. A deeper tone.

I don't think the major/minor losses associated from the longer travel of the tube (friction) and the bend angle should be significant. And potentially even offset by the gains of redirecting to a cooler flow of air.

I have not ripped out my boxes/tubes and dug around enough yet, but it would be nice if there were some lower cavities to install an intake filter in.

The only thing I'm unsure of its what breather filter I can use for the small tube that's connected to the bottom part of the intake box

How bad is it to be running my intake without a shield? I’m waiting on one from roc euro. Bought one online from some douche who failed to tell me it was for the a6
