    Who wants to see a BENT ROD?

    A few of you already know I'm installing IE rods and few other things along with this since I have pulled the engine out.

    When I first saw the cylinder 4 sitting lower than cylinder 1 I knew something was not right. I found to be a bent rod which in my case this is the best case scenario since I'm replacing these mozzarella rods we have in our engines from factory.

    Oh, I forgot to mention I'm running a K0R GT which never ran strong since I installed it. I only pushed a few times 25-30 psi on the base file by mistake, we all know how how Eurodyne base file is set, but I never pushed it hard and whenever I drove it a bit harder it was after the tune was turned down and the boost was only peaking around 18-20psi. I'm not sure if the rod bent after the K0R install of before when I was stage 2+ but I can say I was killing my car while stage 2+ just cause it ran so good with no problems.

    Is there anyone out there that got a bent rod while running a K04 variant without being Maestro tuned? I am curious.

    Jake,

    yea, there are a few people who ran k04's and bent rods off the tune, i think APR given the mild nature and focus on reliability had the fewest, and i think all others that ran ko4 had some issues bending rods, evidently, the ko4 produces so much torque at low RPMs that it's prone to bending rods, there are a few threads on the matter at hand.

    despite the downside in turbo lag a gt28 was safer (if i remember) to run than a ko4 at times

    ^^ ran a gt2871r on my B6 without upgraded rods never had issues. Imo its easier to bend a rod with a K04 as you mentionned

    Hmm.. So what other tuners had people bending rods on a K04? It boggles my mind because Audi typically gives engines stouter rods than this. Even for the stock N/A cars like the B6-B7 S4 it took us a Vortech V3 Blower and close to 500AWHP to start bending them.

    Wow im glad i upgraded rods when i went k04, even happier that i did it now that i am stage 3. Thats crazy! I can only imagine that there is likely many more ppl out there running stage 2+ who have likely done the same and unless you have opened the engine up will never know.

    it's not the HP that bends em, it's the incredible amount of torque so early on in which rods bend, you can go all the way to a gt30-35 at 19-22 psi and really be ok (if you can sort out your fueling of course)

    but yea, i mean tunes were made on it, and certainly there were a LOT of happy ko4 customers it's just the rods seemed to only bend on the ko4 set ups.

    Yeah, I under stand that it is the torque onset that is causing the issue, but I just feel that with the right tuning the same if not more power levels can be achieved without the sacrifice of the stock rods. My reference to the near 500AWHP S4 is that it is a very torquey V8 that was able to go that far with stock internals.

    it was certainly a problem with the tuning, you can easily dial back the turbo and have less torque (what APR did) and be totally fine running a k04.

    problem was, tuners got caught up providing the most torque and hp for a k04. the race to the top was at the expense of the owner's rods, APR while overpriced in my opinion, has never been one to join the race for the most power, they create some power, maybe not 100% maybe around 80-90 but they will stand by their product and how they are in it for the long haul.

    just curious, when was peak torque hit with your v8?

    Probably instantly, like 2200RPM. How's the STI on lag? any plans to upgrade that?

    Yeah I don't remember the exact numbers as it has been a couple years since I have seen the graph (I can't even find it now lol) but it is pretty instant with a supercharged V8.

    sti is a dog before 1800, very similar to the a4 actually, but it comes alive up till 5, then you can tell the ecu kicks in and nannies it back down.

    honestly not sure what i am gonna do, part of me wants to upgrade it to stage 2, part of me wants to sell it and get a tesla.

    I am in the middle of an addition on my house, and have plans to go full-solar, i figure if i can knock out my electric bill, maybe i can knock out my gas bill as well. plus those model S's are beauts

    I disintegrated a rod and blew a hole in my block on my K04 United Motorsports tuned, but I will say my build was used to write the original UM K04 Base file which has been tweaked quite a bit since then so you can't expect things to be perfect the first go round. Rebuilt the motor with brute rods and CP pistons and no issues now

    Wow, it broke into pieces??

    So that is 1 person without Maestro with rod+k04 issues. Any others out there?

    if you are a pro tuner ( clearly, i mean jhm aint nothing to fuck with) the stock block is a trooper, you will run into fueling issues LOOOOONG before you reach the potential of these internals.

    That is another one of my curiosities. How far can we go with stock fueling. Once we get farther along with our big turbo kit I will be able to share the information that we find when it comes to how far we go can go with stock internals etc..

    Haha, I bet! We went through 3 engines during the R&D of our S4 Supercharger Kit to determine what was safe for stock internals lol.

    it's been very well documented in other threads, there was a guy on here "HPFPUPGRADE" that ran a whole bunch of tests, basically, an upgraded fuel pump, plus s3 injectors are the most optimal set up.

    people were running rs4 injectors but the spray pattern was not ideal and fucking up shit.

    beyond the fuel pump upgrade and injectors you are looking at 100% meth injection in order to run a 108 file or so.

    I had no idea it was like that, I don't know when it happened, it might have happened when I was stage 2+ or after KOR install, I have no clue. I've alayws had issues with my maestro tune while KOR and never had it running right but that's all I can say.

    But my car was basically running fine if not pushed hard. Lately I used to get lots of misfires at high boost and two days before I pulled the engine out the car started smoking really bad out of nowhere while cruising.

    Thanks for the info! We already have some 100+ octane tuning for the B7 A4 which we used to set the stock turbo 1/4mile record of 13.3 seconds. We were able to get the B7 RS4 down to 11.1 on 100% stock fueling components too, so I have a little faith we can go further with the 2.0T

    Here's a great way to find out how really good your tuning abilities are. Stock injector's and hpfp running a BT set up putting down 375awhp. Youll have everybody on your tip
