Quiet muffler without killing the flow?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Right now I am running single 3" pipe from the cats back, no muffler. Cats/pre-cats are all still intact. I am looking for a way to quiet the car down without killing the flow I currently have. I've been searching the exhaust threads, but most are simply about the sound of the exhaust, which doesn't help me much.

I'm just looking for a muffler that is single 3" in/out. Any suggestions?

These kind of super awesome and very helpful responses seem to be flooding every forum lately. It seems everyone thinks they are funny.

I love the sound the way it is, and I wouldn't consider it too loud, but I am moving back to my home state, and the laws on exhaust there leave the volume up to the discretion of the officer. Unfortunately that means if is their PMS time, the fines could pile up fast. I've been down that road too many times before.

    step 1: buy a muffler
    step 2: install the muffler

yes, 3" in 3" out. magnaflow or borla are common

yes they'll restrict flow, but not much, and they're far away from the source. you're way overweighting the flow restriction. get a bigger exhaust instead of the smallest aftermarket exhaust they offer if you're concerned about it.

I think the way to get power and stay quiet is to open things up near the engine(downpipe) but putting a muffler towards the rear. I've also been keen on keeping my car emissions friendly so I have a catback exhaust with muffler....still have both cats as well. I might end up back in NJ so removing cats and muffler is not on my to do list.

I can relate man, I love my exhaust but I had to put my car back to stock to get an inspection sticker and its kinda nice not getting grilled by every cop I drive by because of my exhaust. I have been thinking of trying to make mine a tad quieter as well. In MA if you modify the exhaust in a manner that makes it louder than stock its illegal, yet you see cars with exhaust mods left and right.

I have always driven cars with aftermarket exhaust for the past 10 years and I only every actually got a ticket for it once, appealed it, had the magistrate and the state police officer at the courthouse that day listen to my car rev, they deemed it not too loud and the ticket was tossed out. If I ever get pulled over for it again I will try to do the same, the officer deemed my exhaust obnoxious, it was a stock 3.0 A4 with just Magnaflow mufflers and no other exhaust mods! At least give us a DB limit! not just leave it up to the opinion of one officer, thats crazy. From what I have heard they only really go after the real ricers with crazy loud cannons and give them tickets, I know how to keep my car quiet when need be, but still...

The law in VT is really weird. They don't actually have a way of testing it, so it is left up to the discretion of the officer that stops you. For a while, common practice was to test cars from 50' away as the car drove by at speed (usually tested @ 50mph) with whatever cheap meter they were using. some officers started testing using the SAE method (cant remember that one... 8' away with the meter at 45 degrees, car idling or something?), both ways the magic number they were looking for was 95db... but in the end if the cop thinks its too loud, you get a ticket.

During the day it is never an issue because of the other noises around the car, but the first time you roll through a town at 2am, you are bound to get pulled over.

Legally speaking, you just have to have a good exhaust system with no leaks, a cat, and a muffler. The rest is open to interpretation. But the quieter your car, the less chance you have of getting hassled.

Yeah, an I've always liked the sound of them. Had a friend a few years back with a VR6 that had a Borla exhaust, and I LOVED it. quiet but still very mean sounding.

I've only been able to check out videos of flowmaster exhausts, but they kind of sound like the same type of thing. I wouldn't mind a bit more volume, but I just don't want it to be out of place in the small towns.

I remember the APR stealth exhausts. I am probably wrong, but I don't think I can get those in the 3" in / 3" out configuration I need... can I?

The Dynomax muffler is available through Advance and the price is right. I am curious to know how that sounds.

Just get some ssac 3" downpipes and turbo back exhaust . It's good for stage 3 easy .. NOT JOKE. I used to run custom 3" down pipes into single 4" lol sounded amazing... Like a freaking jet plane. But could not go over 3000 With out every cop in district looking for me hahaha but before that I had stock DPS with stock cats into a custom adapter that the 2 mid pipes fit in and single 3 came out with a 40 series flow master. Sounded pretty good also.

Not looking to spend that kind of money right now. Things will be different after the move, but right now all of my money will be going into relocating 1400 miles away. This isn't the time for unnecessary expenses.

Yeah I hear that, my car is def more of a target at night just due to the exhaust. If I could get it quieter they would really have no excuse to pull me over, my window tint is legal, all my lights are legal, ect. Let me know what you end up going with and how it turns out.

Just throw a 40 series flowmaster from eBay on there... It will sound good and take the volume down at lease 50%.. I have had the same set up you are using now. Single 3 from cats back with no muff sounds nasty. Threw a flowmaster on and bam sounded good and noise was not a issue. You won't find anything cheaper then that.
