For those who painted the instrument cluster trim black...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What paint did you use and how well did it match? I am trying to decide between:

    Wurth: http://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/6608...#axzz2uMMbNugK

    Duplicolor: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/trimPaint/

Most reviews seem to say the Wurth paint matches the soft touch color best while Duplicolor matches the raw black better.

    Thanks

you could always vinyl wrap it, easy to do and the finish would be flawless

I did trim for the doors and the front passenger seat. I ended up leaving the instrument color silver for some contrast.

    WOW that looks sick! ^^

Edit: how does that get removed? Does it just pop off with some patients or are there screws like the b6/b7?

Is the door trim difficult to remove? I think instrument trim just pops off right?

If you plan on wrapping trim spend the $15 bucks for the ECS trim removal tool kit. You'll thank me later when you don't break tabs or a trim piece.

the instrument cluster trim just pops right off, no special tools required. be careful with the vent piece though, because if it falls apart, there's a lot of pieces to pick up....

OSIR D-trim makes it look even better:

the door trimming is really easy, just pops right off. However, the center instrument/head-unit trim is actually glued together so you would need to take it apart after removing if you want to wrap it then re-attach it afterwords.

I had a body shop paint mine gloss black. I didn't specify any certain color beyond that, but it matches just fine. :) There is another thread around here somewhere where some people have DIY with varying degrees of success. Some were fine, for others it bubbled. I told the bodyshop about that, and they used a specific kind of paint to reduce the chances of that, I believe they said it was a low solvent paint. Regardless, it turned out well, and for me, was the biggest cosmetic improvement I could make in the interior. I always thought the silver plastic really cheapened it.

I had wrapped my door and dash trim in CF vinyl I had laying around. It was a piece of cake to wrap the door trim + the passenger side 'quattro' blade, but my trim around my mmi screen actually started bubbling from sitting in the hot sun for hours on a summer day. I am going to dip mine black with glossifier in the spring around the dash and shifter, but I will keep my CF trim around the doors as it has held up nicely.

Texture is very smooth. It all depends how you spray the plastidip. I did 3 coats of regular old black plastidip.

How hard did people with the B8.5's find removing the one contiguous instrument cluster dash trim piece? I was trying to get my p3 vent gauge in but couldn't get the upper corner near the MMI off without feeling like I was gonna break it. Also, do you guys put any felt tape down while it's off to reduce squeaking?

Now I just need to re-assemble the upper vents after that metal connector fell off, ugh, what a PITA

Sorry, I kinda forgot to take one. Here it is, just gloss black paint done by a body shop, with the OSIR d-trim pieces added. FWIW, I really like the design of the OSIR pieces, but they have a rather cheap looking finish. They'd be really nice if the same design were available in brushed aluminum, rather than silver plastic.

I think it was $70. But I was already putting it in the shop to get a ding in the fender fixed, so that may have helped. I removed it, they just had to paint it.

EDIT: Also, FYI, there's a thread around here somewhere about painting this yourself. I had read it before hand, some people had success, others eventually experienced bubbling of the paint. I talked to the body shop about this before hand, and he decided to use some special "low solvent" paint, or something to that effect, that he thought would be less likely to do that. He described it as being less aggressive. Whatever he used, it seems fine. I had this done a year ago, and it's held without any issues.

Another edit: I think he may have said he used waterborne paint.
