I didin't get to measure yet since i dont have a gauge, just wanted to know the normal range in oil temp in these engines

haha. Well I figured that. I was so disappointed when I learned I couldnt measure oil temp with torque.

Yes that would be a good way to state it. Or if someone with a gauge on tbeir car could tell me what theirs run at.

If there were a venn diagram of 3.0 owners and people with oil temp gauges, the circles would not even come close to overlapping.

Having said that I would imagine the oil temps would be in a pretty standardized range among other cars/engines that run a similar stock oil weight. I would browse BITOG and see if you can dig up any information. The Bentley might have some specs for this but I only have the hardback book so I can't exactly look through it at work.

I tried alldatadiy.com with no luck, and i'll try BITOG, but i would appreciate it if you can look it up in the bentley when you get a chance. Thanks:)

Since Audi provides zero provisions for measuring oil temps....you will probably be hard pressed to find any info...

Here is a thread about the 2.8. Pretty much the same basic engine so I would imagine oil temps would be in the same range. The guy said his was generally between 220-250*F

    Thanks!
The reason im asking all of this is to interpert my oil pressure readings correctly. I had a problem with the oil pressure warning coming on even after changing the sensor, as the shop i took it to stated that the oil pressure readings were good.
So I went ahead and installed a oil pressure gauge.
With the gauge installed, i have the original pressure sensor conected also, and I guess from moving around the wiring the sensor hasn't acted up again.
Now, to see if the oil pressure is within spec, the oil temp has to be at 80 celsius(176 fahrenheit). The minimum specs for this car at 80 degrees oil temp is to be 1.5 (22psi) bar at idle and 3 bar (43.5 psi)at 2000rpm
The thing is that after warming up the car for 5+ min my readings are un spec but after driving my idle pressure drops to 10psi.
This would be normal if the oil temp is at 100-110 celsius(220-240 f) since the pressure can drop ad much as .5 bar(7psi) per 10 degrees temp increase.
Yea..a lot of information, im just trying to interpert everything correctly.
At least I dont get the oil pressure warning anymore:)

not sure about the 3.0, but the 1.8T paired with an STE PPD allow me to check on the oil temp. 220-240 F is pretty much the range for when I'm warmed up. I wonder if I could bring the PPD over to my 3.0 and check it out.

My '97 Passat VR6 had an oil temperature gauge. Typical operating temperature was 210°-225°F. If I really beat on it I would approach 240°

Can't you get a drain plug with a thermocouple in it?

huh... Those numbers seem very high. My 1.8t (B6) operational engine oil temperature is 176° F. On a hot summer day, hard driving, I've seen it approach 186° F. Maybe 1.8t runs cooler than 3.0? Engine coolant runs hotter, I think...maybe that's where those 220°+ numbers are coming from?

First time i hear of a thermocouple, i'll look into it.
Or I'll prob rent the ross tech cable from a guy that i just found out about( or buy one soon) hahaha... They do come in handy in these situations.
Thanks for all the input... I guess every car is different so no other way than to test it

Where are you measuring the oil temperature? Either your gauge is wrong or you are just getting a bad reading. Think about it....The oil goes through the oil cooler which is typically in the 200°-225° range. If your oil never got above 186° f it would be foaming from all of the condensation that would collect in the oil pan.

All modern engines are designed to get the oil at least to the boiling point of water to keep condensation from collecting and to provide uniform oil flow through the oil galleys.

My oil temperature sensor is inserted in a sandwich plate at the oil filter. The Bentley Oil Pressure Specifications state:

    1.8L Engine
    Oil Pressure at 3000 rpm and 80°C (176°F): 3.5 to 4.5 bar (51 to 65 bar)

I assume 176°F is what they consider normal operational temperature? They indicate the engine should be warm when testing temp/pressure.

80c is the minimum temperature for the temperature gauge to read centered (12:00). Typically the coolant runs a little over 100c exiting the rear coolant flange. It flows from there through the oil cooler (as well as other places). It would be pretty hard to cool the oil to 80c with 100c+ coolant.

Yeah... Not sure. All I know is what I've told you: My oil temperature sensor is installed basically at the oil filter housing, and reads between 170°F and 180°F when the car is warmed up, and my Bentley has the specification I relayed above printed on page 17-4. Possible it's wrong. But that's what is says. You know way more than I do about it than I do... I never even thought about it beyond the digital readings I see every day.
