2009 A4 MMI to USB key?

    Hello all,

When I bought my 2009 A4 (used), it came with a Audi MMI to iPod adapter. I looked on eBay and there seems to be many Audi MMI to USB adapters that you can plug a USB drive to.. they're all cheap at around $15 or so though it says:

"This cable only interfaces the audio all other controls must be made on the audio device it's self.".

Anyone have one of these and can vette if that's true? If its true, how the heck do you browse files through a USB key??

yes they work, i have an external usb hard drive connected to mine and the music all shows and controls through the MMI, same way as if you had a CD or SD card in there.

as for the 'cable only interfaces with the audio' that sounds more like the description of the AUX cable input and not the USB one. plugging in an ipod or anything else through the AUX, it'll play only the music and won't send data for all your songs and playlists, have to do that on the ipod/mp3 player itself.

this is what i have, the AMI to USB input adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-Music-I...item485c3036e1

The the USB adapter, is there a size limit? like 32gb, 64, etc? I have cheaper usb sticks kicking around than SD cards (currently have a 16gb SD card for now).

Also, I was looking into the mini usb adapter for android phones, but heard that our head unit may not recognize it?

    PS, using 2011 S4, non-nav.

yeah only the iphone will work through that with a full integration, doesn't support anything else and if you plug in with the mini usb into the phone, it will prob just charge and if your phone has the option to act as a usb media player, then it can output audio but you'd have to control it through the phone (same as the AUX, and this was prob the description you saw before).

but for the USB input adapter, SD cards and hard drives work fine, and will show in MMI just like a CD. i dont know if there's a limit but i think per folder level there's a limit of 1000 folders, it wont show the folders past that.

i have a 128gb solid state drive in there, and it reads it fine so i think up to 500gb or so it should be fine. but what i did with my HD is i partitioned a separate 50gb partition just for the music (FYI has to be FAT32 format, doesn't read NTFS drives), so i have that 50gb on a fat32 format and the car only reads that, but it loads up quicker than if i left it as one big 128gb partition i noticed. usb drives you'll be ok but just fyi for the hd incase you end up using that. also i'd still recommend usb drive over a hd of course because of all the vibrations and shaking the HD will go through, a flash drive or solid state HD will be a much better option and also loads way quicker.

This is very interesting. I never thought of if they made a usb mmi cable, I have always just used the SD card slot. But I will for sure be grabbing this as I don't have an iPhone and never use it (I even keep 2 old ipods in my car and never update them, it's just such a pain.) I'm gonna stick a ssd in there. Thanks for the info about the formatting smoke.

what year car do you have? i think the MMI 2G (or non-MMI i think) from the 09 and 10 cars might still have that 1000 folder limit, because they also have a 4gb SD card limit and dont read the newer high capacity SD cards, so just wondering if maybe you have a 2011 or 12 and have the newer MMI (or you have the factory nav MMI) and you don't have issues.

but yeah im sure it will still read up to a 1tb drive though, just may not show everything unless you have them separated into folders so its not over 1000 folders in one level.
