    B8 A4 Battery Replacement - Coding

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey everyone,

I just replaced my battery, but I'm having trouble coding the 19-CAN module for the new one.
The coding wants a 11 digit part number and a 10 digit serial number. What appears to be the s/n number on the new battery is only 8 digits long. I tried using spaces and zeros at the end - both coding strings were rejected. Everything works fine, but I still want to figure out the coding.
It seems that the new battery is missing the number directly above the QR code on the old battery...

My original coding string: 8K0915105D MLA 190715FY2K

    Original battery:

    New Battery:

Right, that's the original battery. The new battery only has an 8 digit number after the 3 digit vendor code - It seems to be missing the additional string that the old battery has above the QR code

In your second picture with the BEM code sticker there is a number that starts MLA and then it's 190715FY2K (10 digits)

2nd picture is the original battery as he said -- it matches his original coding.

    New battery is EMC***

Nope I had the same old battery and same new battery I tried for hours and it took one of the combinations i put inside. I don't think it's the right one but it seems to be working fine now lol
Check this thread out http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...hlight=battery. I think in Germany they have a good supplier for the MLA's and in North American it's ENERTIC

    I'm guessing

If this is correct, then this would be the new code

Can everyone who has access to their battery with a BEM code send a picture of it? I'd like to test this theory.

    I'll play....

    I get:

    205# 8K0 915 105 F
    #1#315472985#170713
    *205 MLA1D7H618M*=

    THE CODE HAS BEEN BROKEN!!!

    Example QR Code is
    205# 8K0 915 105 F
    #1#315472985#170713
    *205 MLA1D7H618M*=

After the last time after *205 is "MLA1D7H618M*=" Take MLA and the last 5 digits and discart the last one. So MLA H618.
The missing 6 digits in the center can be found on the digits before *205 and #. "170713"
It is an inverse of what you see for every two. So "170713" is 13, 07, 17. = 130717

    MLA130717H618
AND THE BEM Code is MLA130717H618. Ding Ding Ding!!

Let's try this again with the first picture we have.

    Example 2 QR Code is
    205# 8K0 915 105 D
    #1#315472985#150709 *205 MLA197FY2KE*=

So let's apply the same analysis.
    #1) *205 MLA197FY2KE*=
    You get
    MLA FY2K
    #2) #150709
    You get 09,07,15
    #3) MLA090715FY2K
    BEM Code was MLA190715FY2K

    DING DING DING!

If anyone else can post their batteries with BEM Code I would like to test it over and over to be 100% sure.

    QR result :

    205# 8K0 915 105 F
    #1#315472985#170712 *205
    MLA1C7HBAF%*=

Your formula : MLA plus last 5 before "*=" and then drop the last : MLA HBAF, then reverse the pairs between # and *205 : 120717

    Result : MLA120717HBAF
BEM printed on battery : MLA120717HBAF

    Yep.

Anyone else think the 120717 is the date of manufacture? My car was built in July of 2012.

The Product code doesn't follow the rest is correct.
    JCB090116G0Q9 when it's suppose to be VA0590116G0Q9

    Side by side

    JCB0 90116 G0Q9
    VA05 90116 G0Q9

The difference is JCB0 is suppose to be VA05.

Crap. But we know Varta is suppose to be VA0 as per VCDS first screen shot but where did that 5 come from?

Weird I get this when I decode the QR code "205#000915105CD # GM7"
Take some more photos all around the battery, was your older battery an AGM as well?

The OE Moll battery in my '11 A4:

My car has a battery option code of "JOR" (found on the label in the trunk).

    QR readout:
    205# 8K0 915 105 D
    #1#315472985#260211 *205
    MLA1B2QTNX8*=

I think your interpretation of the date code is correct. Per your example, my battery would have been produced Feb 26, 2011. You can see a date code stamped in the battery post (negative) showing "08 11" (8th wk of 2011). My car was produced Mar 2011. This battery is a traditional flooded lead-acid design, 80Ah.

On my car the coding looks like:

    VVVVVVVVVV MMM DDDDDDNNN

VVVVVVVVVV battery P/N (either 10 or 11 characters)
    MMM (battery mfr code)
DDDDDDNNNN (date produced (YYMMDD) followed by 4 character serial number)

sdf, did Moviela's reply to your other thread help out at all?

Your software might be hard coded to accept only certain known to Ross-Tech, where the workshop VAG system could have been updated to accept parts sold in Canada.

I'd give Ross-Tech a call if you are still having problems, and refer them to this thread.

Curious but how long did your original battery last before going bad? Mine is about 2 years and now it's only at about 50%. It does charge when I'm driving but seems to lose charge while sitting. Either it's a bad battery or something is causing a draw on it.

Check if you have a draw it's pretty simple you just need a multimeter.

    Mine lasted 3 years.

Careful with this. If you have a VCDS cable, log in and look at the real info. I'm not certain why, but they program the battery level in the MMI to report somewhat lower than reality. Check with your cable to see what the actual status is. I can see the cold weather has a direct impact, too on what the gage (MMI) reports.

my OEM AGM lasted 5 years and 2 months and I'm horrible on my batteries.....short and infrequent trips, lots of load. Every 3-4 months and if I'm not using my car for an extended period (especially in the winter) I hook it up to an intelligent charger (Noco Genius).
My other home is an AIRSTREAM.

Seems really early for a battery on 2012 car. However, do heed the warning signs.

As Cory hints, consider replacing with an AGM. The life span can be dramatically longer compared to traditional (flooded) batteries. I'm fairly certain the AGM in our '06 Avant is original meaning it was produced in Sept 2005. It still shows 100% on the battery gage.

Everyone seems to be selling AGM now. It's probably $160 for our cars at Interstate, Sears, etc.

It seems like the cars sent to Canada get them as standard equipment.

    Awesome, thanks for the link!
Also, I read on audiworld that some ppl are just changing one number from their old code, which seems to work for some ppl.

Yeah, it seems logical to do that, but does the car need to see the date code to perform its projections?

Does anyone have a good understanding of the BEM? I don't know whether it needs these inputs we're fussing over or if it's just another way for the dealer to pocket an extra $200.

My personal interest is around switching my car from a traditional flooded battery to the newer AGM style. Does the BEM need to be told that there's a different style battery fitted that's going to have a different lifespan and possibly a different capacity?

Haven't had time to try messing with the coding since I started this. Going to try changing it again this weekend.
My battery lasted a bit over 4 years, and I got the new one from my dealer for ~$150.

The battery state detection calculates important output values for the operability of a battery, such as the state of charge, overall condition and capacity of the battery, available charge up to the limit of cranking ability, temperature of the battery acid and maximum permissible period of engine not running while being standing in start-stop mode.

The algorithm for the battery state detection, co-developed by Audi Electronics Venture GmbH, is core of the battery data module (BDM). The BDM is integrated group-wide into various Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda and Porsche models.

The project participants are Audi, VW, Porsche (OEM), Lear Spain, Valls (hardware and operating system), HELLA, Lippstadt (hardware and operating system) and Audi Electronics Venture GmbH (software implementation, software testing, co-development of battery state detection algorithm).

There are now more than 4.5 million vehicles featuring this system out on the roads.

Uncontrolled drawing of electrical energy can result in a sharp drop in its availability. Flat batteries are therefore a common cause of breakdowns. Audi addresses this challenge with an energy management approach that monitors the vehicle’s energy consumption and adjusts it on demand.

The benefits of this battery/energy management approach:
•Minimum level of battery charge for starting engine is maintained
    •Battery life prolonged
    •Diagnosis of energy consumption
•Battery discharging when not in use for lengthy periods reduced
    •Fuel saving
•Increased availability of electrical energy for comfort and infotainment systems

Audi Electronics Venture GmbH implements specifications in MATLAB®/Simulink® models and generates C code from them. It tests models and their software implementation to compile the C code for various suppliers. Audi Electronics Venture GmbH also helps to integrate the energy management software into the supplier's software, and tests the software in the vehicle.

Thought there was another thread that indicated that a new battery wouldn't need any coding?

I bought a battery for our A6 Avant this weekend. Wife thought the car was struggling to turn over during this really cold weather.

I removed 000 915 105CE battery, AGM and replaced it with a Sears Group 49 AGM. JC is the producer of both batteries and it was a perfect fit, even the plastic cap that fits over the top of the battery. Vent tube matches up.

The battery coding on these earlier cars is more simplistic:

I can tell the battery in this car was replaced at the dealer, perhaps during CPO. They did not re-code the battery so the above coding is what the car left the factory with in Nov 2005. Also telltale is the part number of the battery I removed has three leading zeros indicating it can be used in either VW or Audi.

I'm going to re-code this as a Varta AGM battery.

New Sears AGM battery ($143 + tax):
