    Angry Broken exhaust manifold stud

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I noticed tonight one of my exhaust manifold studs is broken with the nut missing. Luckily, it is still sticking out a little passed the manifold. I also noticed another nut loosening itself. What should I do to try to extract the stud? Any upgraded studs available to install(m8x1.25)?

I've never seen it or heard of it but the reviews sound pretty promising. There's only 35 reviews and 27 of them are 5 stars. It's also only $20 so seems like a win, win. Only problem is ya got no room to work in there.

Yeah the manifold would have to come off to extract it. I said the next time I had to remove it I would be upgrading so now Im contemplating riding it out until I can afford to have a manifold fabd up.

Can't really tell how thick the manifold is but with it off you could probably get two nuts on there to get the stud out. At least if the nuts will go on the stud since it's broken. If not there's plenty of options for ya. A pair of vice grips might work or an EZ-out. I don't think you'll have a problem getting it out but be prepared when ya go for it. Also if you could get one nut on there you could tac weld the nut there once or twice to extract it. That tool you posted looks like it would do the trick though.

Buy the OEM Audi manifold studs

There are many cheap/poor quality manifold studs out there, but the OEM's hold up the best!

Also torque them to their specified torque...not over torqued.

A place between here and there

Take off your turbo, manifold, lock two nuts together and you can take that off. There is a lot of the stud left over once the manifold is removed. Plus I really don't see you taking it off without the manifold removed regardless. Just dedicate a weekend to it. Replace with an OEM stud. That looks like a freak accident to me. And don't over-torque the nuts. When the manifold heats up and expands, over-torquing can lead to what you have now.

I ordered the stud puller linked above. I used metric jet nuts on the top 6 studs because of clearance and made sure not to over torque them. I noticed another top middle nut loosening itself and removed it today and saw that stud is starting to deform also. As of now, I need to replace 2 top studs. Amazingly I do not have any leaks/noises I just happened to look and see it broken. Since it is freezing cold right now im just driving it as is until it gets warmer to work on it. Of course this needed to happen to me right when I ordered my external oil cooler setup.
