Exclamation Dead battery, keys locked inside

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Car has been sitting for awhile, tried to start it but the battery was dead. Went to go jump it, left the keys in the ignition and shut the door then all the door automatically locked. How can I get in? My hood is popped so I have access to charge the battery, but where to go from there??

Call the police for a lock out, dude ... come on now ... think! Either that or do what the cops would do, use a wedge and a long flex-stick and open the door handle (which will unlock the door).

I don't know how it works in other states, but in CA you just call a tow truck and pay $60-80 and they unlock it for you.

Somebody you know must have membership, have them call in. Tow truck drivers who come don't check anything since it is already paid for, they just break into your car.

alternatively tow it to major NJ/NY/PA city. Tell them to drop in on a busy street. Wait 15 minutes, somebody will break into it to steal the car. Once it fails to start, you come over, say "thank you", reconnect the battery and go your way.

This. I use my buddies membership countless amounts of time. Sometimes he isn't even with me.

Had it towed from MD to PA without a problem on his account without him there.

This is a better alternative than the "brick through the window" option. Very creative, bravo

I agree having no spare is kinda risky, I used to have my ex-gf keep the plastic key to my A4 in her purse just in case I was dumb enough to lock my keys in the car, in fact she never gave it back, not that it matters now the car is gone. The S4 didn't come with the plastic spare but did come with a normal spare. Otherwise I would do like suggested, put a miter cut on a small block of wood and use something stiff/flexible to open the door handle. I imagine this may be easier said than done since on these cars it isn't possible to simply pull the manual lock up like it is on many other cars. My co-worker locked himself out of his dodge stratus recently, we had that thing opened in under 10 minutes with a coat hanger and block of wood, but we didn't have to go for the door handle in his case the pop up lock was easy to hook around.

    1) don't call the police
    2) call AAA if you have it, they'll send a tow truck to pry open the door with an inflatable balloon, then they reach in and pop the handle (warning this can bend the door frame, but what else are you gonna do?)
    3) get a backup key

I actually did this on my old Volvo. Before the days of cell phones, I got locked in the state park mountain biking and managed to leave the car key on the driver's seat. It was cold, rainy and the park ranger had left me the combination of the padlock to get out on a note on my car(after they ran the plate and reported me missing to my parents..). I had comprehensive coverage so I said eff it and took a rock to the passenger window and was in and on my way to vacuum the glass out in a few minutes. Cheaper and faster than waiting for a car service..at the time.

Can I ask why? I have several close friends who are POs and they don't mind doing this for people ... as a public servant, home lockouts and car lockouts are pretty much SOP.

Only time I've ever locked my keys in the car was before owning my S4. I had a MK4 jetta wagon and was up in VT skiing for the weekend. Car got stuck outside the cabin and had to be rocked/pushed out. I had the drivers door open, with my foot on the gas while some friends were pushing it out. The key here is that when that car gets above 10 mph (or what it thinks is 10 mph) it automatically locks the doors. I get out of the car and close the door to go grab my gear and come back to a running car that I was locked out of. For this reason, anytime I leave my keys in the car I always put the window down.

fair enough, but you gotta understand most people's experiences with police officers is not that they are public servants, more public nuisances. I'd expect a sobriety test and 30 minutes of harassment just for inviting them over.

had a friend last weekend who reported a set of car tracks that went off a cliff. cops came, found no car at the bottom, but proceeded to harass him for an hour accusing him of street racing, dui, and wasting their time. General malfeasance is par for the course for police these days. -- and this is only the most recent affront. i have about 10 more stories from just the last year including 2 people getting 'evading police' charges after they pulled over in response to the lights -- it just took the cop so long to catch up to them (locals on windy roads) that the officers drew guns and arrested them -- for a simple speeding violation -- one even had his dog wagging his tail in the passenger seat while they went all swat team on him.
