Question Pulling cars out with your Audi B5 Quattro

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just wanted to get a general consensus of how many people used a tow strap to help people who were stranded in a ditch. First of, do our cars have the pulling power to pull others out? Secondly, I've noticed that under the rear bumper we have towing hitch built on the car, is that purpose of that tow loop/hitch?

just don't burn up your clutch. also, don't use your rear loop to pull with. most vehicles will have a towing point that's higher, which can really mess up your bumper.

my MO for pulling out other cars (Using my B6A4, RS6 and RS4 over the years) has always been to screw in the front eye and do it in reverse.

Had the pleasure of pulling a Raptor out of a big snow bank this year around Christmas. He was salty about it.

Best have a good high torque rated clutch. Because you are going to smoke your stock one trying to do that.

One of those bun-gee type tow straps would probably help save your clutch. Also reduce shock loads to your frame, etc.

I don't recall pulling anything out with my B5 yet. I mostly use the tow hook to drag it onto the dolly or trailer when it breaks. #theSadTruth

Did 2001's have a factory hitch, because 99's don't. And the aftermarket ones, which I have, are class 1, rated for 1000lbs. Trying to pull a car with that will probably be a huge mistake. If your really generous, use your front tow hook.

now that I think about it, I've only ever pulled people out when I've been in seriously low traction situations so my tires slipped before my clutch. Maybe heeding some words of caution about that if you somehow have great traction where you're pulling someone out is a good idea. I immediately assumed you meant snow.

My 2001 does...it has a tow loop/hitch built into the rear bumper. I do not know if this is for our cars to be pulled safely onto a flatbed or we can pull others out of ditches/snow banks. I also read that on the passenger side front grille near the fogs, there is place where you hoop up a tow strap to pull others out like palewhitemale said.

For the record guys have a Tiptronic trans so I do not know if that is advantage or disadvantage.

I pulled a slammed hellaflush G35 who was trying to drive on bald rear tires in Boston snow one night. He had chains in his trunk and i had no customers at work, so i towed him a few blocks up Huntington because it was a slight incline, and he was just spinning in the middle of the street, just an accident waiting to happen. My manager thought it was hilarious watching my "mom wagon"(his words) tow a car down the street.

I pulled my buddy's fox body out of a little bit of snow (only 5-6 inches) with my 2.8! I was on gravel, however. Easy as cake.

You use a tow strap on the front or back?

Nice so the tow loop is strong enough.

I talked my buddy into trying to go off road to do donuts in the snow in his lowered integra.. lol kept calling him a pussy he made a 3/4 turn and got stuck so I dragged him out backwards and then some lady in a cobalt and some old guy in a Pontiac. the old guy j hooked my strap so no more towing till I get a new one. and I did all this on a stock 200k clutch. :)

I am going to buy a 20,000lb strap for mine and keep it in the trunk just in case. Its cool to hear all these stories, especially since there have been so many snow storms.
