    Painting window trim

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So today I plastidiped my front grille and I love it. Couldn't be happier. I though about selling this one and buying a black optics bla bla bla, but the end of the day I felt that was too much hastle for something I could do and just peel it off if I get over it. Now that I have done that I feel the window trim and possibly mirrors need to be done. Is there a way to take the trim off or would you guys just tape everything off and do it that way. Here's a pic of my grille from today before and after

I'm about to do it (and my grille). Have just done my mirrors, It doesn't look like there's going to be a simple way of disassembling it all, so I'll just be masking off essentially the entire car aside from the bits I'm 'dipping'

wyh - Did you remove the grill, or just tape off surrounding areas?

Regarding the trim, it is supposedly very fiddly to get on and off. If you look at the online titanium trim parts, it actually comes with the rear quarter-window!

I've been tempted to order the black-optics grill as well, but... the car is so rare, I don't really feel a strong need to differentiate its external appearance from other vehicles. If there were an easy way to fit a full length grill (like the current RS4), I would be all over that.

Grill looks good! Much better without the horizontal chrome bars.

I've heard/read the window trim is near impossible to get on and off, even body shops hate doing it. I would definitely just mask that off and do it on the car. The beauty of Plasti dip, any over spray will clean/peel right off.

    Looking forward to pics.

Here are 2 threads with more reading on this. You will see arguments for all 3 options: dip/paint, wrap, or replace. I vote for the vinyl wrap, using 3M 1080.

The second link is on the last post of this thread here:

Thanks for all the comments guys

Looks like I will wrap the trim.

For my grill I just left it on the car and taped everything off. Not too bad.

I struggle so much for some reason when it comes to messing with the trim on our cars. It's kind of the signature RS theme to have the silver trim ya know? At the same time, it looks great wyh!

grill looks good.. I'd say try easy and cheap method of plastidipping your window trim first (since you got the hang of it now) and see how it goes. I got mine wrapped..wasn't cheap, but looks good to me!

wrapping it is ultimately the way I want to go, but its not a bad idea to just do it with plastidip and see how it holds up.

    Painting window trim

I don't mind the brushed aluminum trim..just depends on what color the car is. on the blues it looks perfect. but on my black RS I'm liking the meaner look. :)

I plastidipped all of mine before I left. It looks ok for a short term, but when I get back I will probably wrap or paint satin Titanium. Best of luck!

I had my body shop remove and paint the trim gloss black to match my black optic grill...held off on the mirrors at the time, but just took the car in this week to have them painted gloss black as well.

I dipped the trim & grille on our B8.5 S4. Grille is perfect. Now that I've done it once I could do the trim without error. There are a couple of small imperfections. I aldo did the trim, grille & bumpers on my daily driven GMC truck. I've ran it through the automatic car washes several times and the trim has held up very well.

i have been contemplating getting my trim done due to the common issue of it dulling and changing color... but last night i was polishing my wheels with some wenol... i thought i'd try it on my trim and sure enough it did a fantastic job!!! i am just not sure about black trim with the sprint blue.

Nice. I'm really curious how well the new finish holds up. I'm starting to see little spots on the trim on my car and I'd love to be able to get rid of them (at least semi-) permanently.

Looks much better, but I thought that is a painted surface? Wenol is not recommended for paint, as per their product spec.

I am not sure if the silver trim is painted - looks like some kind of metal dip - no clue tho... I have been using Wenol on paint for years. Ever get a small bothersome clearcoat scratch in the crown of a golf club? -Wenol works wonders. Not sure how safe it is but have never run into any issues.

Who exactly would fall under the "professional" category in this situation? A simple body shop? Or some kind of specialist?

I dipped my b6 trim and think it looks good. But IMO the b7 grill is so sexy, the chrome trim on the front grill looks good. I would think just blacking out the license plate strips would look great and keeping the rings and the trim chrome. As for window trim, on black and silver cars, black it out, on most others, I think the chrome works well, red and dark blue (like OP) especially. I also wrapped my window trim and used plasti dip on the grill.
