    100 km per quarter tank?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,
So I'm thinking this could be a fuel gauge issue or just really bad fuel consumption? I'm just getting 100 km's per quarter tank which i think is horrible but this.morning i had a full tank and within 5 km the gauge started to move away from the full position. Also when my gauge reaches 1/4 it suddenly drops to empty. What do you guys think? Sender issue?

    Thanks

Fuel level sending unit in right side of the tank. You can pull it and attempt to clean it, which worked for me for about a year before it finally gave up on me. a new unit is $154 through ECS tuning.

The best way to test your fuel consumption is just by doing your own math each time you fill the tank.

Don't forget how cold it has been up here.
I get about 150ish for the first quarter tank of city driving.
    About 525Km for the whole tank. 75city / 25Hwy

    I only use Shell 91 (0% Ethanol)

With shell 91 if I am at 0Km to empty i would but in 20L and get 200KM on the button. Tested several times
I used Esso 91 (up to 10% Ethanol) once because there was no shell near. 20L and got 160KM.

In the winter I fill up as I don't want any condensation in the tank.

How many miles/KM do you get and how many gallons/L do you usually put in?

My point being your gauge is likely inaccurate due to one of more faulty senders...

Mine is a Quattro so I believe mine is on the left side? I could be wrong but I think I have to senders, one for the gauge and one for the computer..

I put 91 petro Canada everytime and I cant go to empty cause the gauge doesn't seem to work properly when it's that low..

I haven't done a complete full to empty run yet since once I hit one quarter the needle goes straight to empty. Im sure its the sender on the left side but im not 100%.

I have quattro as well, we actually have 2 sending units... but only 1 of them is used by the cluster for level. I don't know if you are right hand drive, or if there is even a difference for the right hand drive model...

Fuel pump and level sending unit is on the right side of the car, and the fuel suction jet pump with level sensor is on the left side of the tank.

I use the MFA screen for reference not the fuel gauge.
For my car with a stage 1 tune the lowest I have gone is.

0Km to empty on the screen.
    Drove for another 24 Km.
Measured with VCDS and it said I have 7L of fuel left.
I was able to put 58L of fuel in the car. Until fuel literally come out of the hole.

I believe the 1.8T quattro tank is 63L capacity.

Unfortunately i don't have VCDS :-( so i can only calculate it manually.. I think the tanks in the quattro are 66L

17.8 gallons in Quattro. You have a digital DTE gauge in the centre of the instrument cluster which is what f1 torrents was referring to.

Oh i see, but for the actual gauge it should be the level unit in the left side behind the driver seat correct?

the fuel gauge is driven both both sender units (assuming AWD and the cluster properly coded), not sure where anyone got the idea otherwise. If you require proof, unplug them one at a time and watch the needle adjust.

Well it being 66L it seems VCDS was spot on.
I put in 58L and VCDS said I had 7 left. Which is 65L total.
I'm impressed with how accurate it is.

    Thanks for the correction.

Question though. So for a while now my gauge has been reading low a bit prematurely. It hits 0 on the DIS and I generally put 14 gallons in. I often drive it past 0, maybe 40 miles after 0, and and it rarely even gets to 16. Now it always tops up past full when the pump clicks off.

Long story short, my gauge is reading low, would it be a good idea to take a look at the drivers side sender? I replaced my pump a year and a half ago but not the sender, could that have gotten bent or damaged?

does the fuel gauge read 'E' when the DIS is at zero? I'd open up VCDS and see what the sender readings are, and what the undetectable fuel value is. You can adjust that in adaptation which will shift the zero calibration of the gauge. I've tweaked all the adaptation values to give a pretty linear reading of the gauge (which it was not with the default values)

Yea E on the gauge more or less lines up with 0 on the dis. I'll have to mess around with VCDS then. What do I look under, 17 - instruments?

Yes. First look at the measuring blocks (forget which ones) to see what the senders are reporting, make sure neither is zero or infinite (pretty sure the operating range is ~64ohm at full to 256ohm at E, or thereabouts).
Then look at adaptation channels 29,30, 32. Don't mess with 33.
