    Testing fuel pump/fuel pump relay

My a4 isnt starting, and im beginning to think its the fuel pump or fuel pump relay. I pulled the relay to get a new one, but its 50 dollars and has to be special ordered.. Id like to test it before I put a new one in, but I dont know how. Is there anyway to test the relay, or hotwire the fuel pump to see if the relay is the culprit? How would I test the pump? thanks!

Ok, i unplugged the fuel pump and hooked up a voltage tester to each connector, moving it around (while the key was in the ON position) and I got about 3 or 4 volts to the fuel pump. Now, im not sure how many volts im supposed to be getting, is it 12? Is there any way to hotwire the fuel pump so I can see if its working or not? Please, please help me before I take this to a shop
    thanks

Ok, I went to audiworld and found a writeup on how to test the pump here:
    http://1.8t.org/~quattroman/Audi%20B...%20&%202.8.pdf

the pump went on when it was hardwired, which makes me believe the resistor is what is bad. I tried starting it with the pump running, but didnt start.. makes me think the injectors/pump run on the same relay, and the injectors are stuck closed even tho the pump is running. Is this true?
