    Top speed of s4?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Have any of you (responsibly or not, thats none of my business ) gotten your s4 up to top speed? Is it governed at 155 or 170? Can a stock car even make it that fast? What were the tires/weather conditions? Where did you do it, if you WERE to drive it that fast....?

Only place I can see that happening is either an unrestricted part of the autobahn or a private runway.

It's limited to 155mph from the factory, but you can probably hit 160+ on your speedo since it reads a little high. I'm sure plenty of people here have hit that.

    Top speed of s4?

13x; 66W going towards Strausburg on WinterSport M3s. It was loud as f**k but the weight held the car in lane until gusts of wind hit, then swaying happens. Roof rack doesn't help the drag either.

I think you're limited to 160/165 though since our speedometers are off by 4.

I never really cared but was always curious... does the JHM tune get rid of the stock speed limiter?

I believe it does. I have until this point held off on tuning this car but I am deeply contemplating doing that this week during some time off....

Cool, thanks for that dparm. I wonder what it would be with JHM's taller 6th gear modification now.

It'd be interesting to see. It is a trade off between power and top speed. With the longer gearing you'll power, but the room for more top speed.

1st stops just past 40? Hmmmm I need to go out and drive because I could've sworn I could get much faster in first.

Also, simple math logic would tell me that speed would increase or decrease (for a given RPM) when playing with overall wheel/tire diameter?

I know the gear ratios were just a bit different between my 04 B6 and the 06+ B7, but my B6 hit 170 right at 7k rmp (dash gauges)

current B7 i haven't even got her to 140, but it didn't feel like she would make it 170+

problem is roads aren't safe (too curvy or hilly) enough in the Carolina s, going to have to wait until i get her down to the Mid South trying again :/

B6/7's have the same final drive ratio, the RS4 has slightly shorter gearing.

I read on here last year that someone has had their car maxed out (with tune IIRC) at 175mph (282 kmph)

    Edit* Keith@APR quotes;

    My B6 S4 hits 174 speedo indicated at roughly 6600 rpm's in 6th.

    My MK4 R32 hits 164 speedo indicated at roughly 6500 rpm's in 6th.

    My MK4 1.8T hit 157 speedo indicated at roughly 6400 rpm's in 5th.

My point is that each of these cars are reflashed with other minor bolt ons and have no problem finding the limits of the gearing.

Speedometer is not 100% accurate, and if you have changed your wheels/tires it will be different as well, yes.

At 165 , speedometer and gps verified, in 6th gear my b7 s4 was at 6700 rpms. So I'd imagine you could get a few more mph out of the stock sixth gear. I'd love to have the .56 installed though.

    Correct....hence the shorter gearing.

My speedo is WAY off with 235/40/18 Nitto NT05's. Indicated 150MPH showed 142 on the GPS

Could we say then that the speedo reads a percentage off, and not a fixed amount lower? Theres no way youre reading 8mph high at say, 25 mph

The speedometer's accuracy is not linear, either.

Remember that at higher speeds weird things happen like the air in the tires expanding, therefore increasing their diameter.

The speedo progressively gets more and more optimistic as you go faster.

My gauge system shows what the ABS wheel speed sensors are reading and during my trip to Cali I drove by a few of those highway signs at different speeds that show how fast you are going. The reading that I was seeing was the same as what the highway signs where showing. So there must be a calculation that the instrument cluster does to come up with the speed that the speedo shows.

I was going ~150 indicated at Pocono but more like 139-140 according to the GPS. Optimistic speedo plus 255/35/18 tires being slightly smaller than stock = very low readings compared to reality.

The highway signs are going to be way less reliable. Cosine error will skew the readout depending on the angle with which the radar beam hits you.

Not maxed, but my friend and I opened up the S4 over the summer to see what she had ... I hit the limiter at ~156 GPS indicated.
