    Fuel Filter DIY

    Parts needed

o Grommet for the seats 4L0886373 (x2) They can be reusable but I broke both of them.
    o Fuel Filter 8K0201511A
    o Union Nut 4F0201375
    o Pump Seal 4F0919133B
    o ****Disposable Rags****

    **Notes**
Rags Rags Rags Rags Rags. Lots of fuel will escape the filter while you mess with it as well as the pump it self as you twist it out of the tank.
The whole task not knowing what I was doing only took me about 45 minutes that was going slowly and figuring things out.
Also be sure to cover the tank access hole once you have the assy pulled out.
Lay rags all around the tank acces hole to catch the escaping fuel.
    Open the garage door.

    Remove the seat anchor points.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Pull up the rear seat with a firm jerk.
    [IMG][/IMG]

    The clip locations
    [IMG][/IMG]

The fuel tank cap remove the 3 screws
    [IMG][/IMG]

    Disconnect the 2 connectors
    [IMG][/IMG]

Remove the fuel line ** Make sure the tank is near empty under 1/4 tank.** Also make sure to have disposable rags ready. Wrap the rags around the connector, squeeze the release tab I used pliers, and pull the line off. Fuel may spill.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Stuff the hole of the fuel line with a rag.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Remove the union nut, I did it with a screwdriver and a hammer as I dont have the VAG tool required. Just twists off.
    [IMG][/IMG]

    Pull the assy upward.
    [IMG][/IMG]

    Disconnect ground wire.
    [IMG][/IMG]

    Discconect fuel line to filter.
    [IMG][/IMG]

    (Phone died)
Pull the assy upward swivel to the left to make room to get it out of the tank be careful with the fuel level bobber
    [IMG][/IMG]

Disconnect the fuel suction line from the bottom of the assy.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Disconnect #2 the wire clamp just pull downward.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Pull the entire assy out of the car to make it easier to remove the fuel filter.
Once out you will see 3 clips holding the filter in place I used zip ties to hold the clips off the filter. Pop the clip slide in a zip tie to hold it.
Once the clips are released just pull the filter out.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Replace the O-ring on the filter the new one comes with the filter.
    [IMG][/IMG]

Slide the new filter in and make sure the clips on secure.
Take the assy back over to the car and install in the tank reconnect everything in reverse order/
Dont forget to refresh the tank seal

When should the fuel filter normally be changed (according to Audi)?

I found the link to the russian walkthrough but its not very detailed.

My car has a stutter under full throttle only while the stage 2 tune is on (demanding more fuel), and has had some starting hesitation as well.

I suspect the fuel filter, and plan to change this out at my 50k mile mark. Hoping to find a better walkthrough looks fairly detailed.

Audi "SAYS" it's a lifetime filter I believe. On the B7 it's changed fairly regularly. I plan to change mine at 50k. I may open it and check it out to see how bad it is.

Wondering if the fuel filter and associated lines use something like: http://hpfpupgrade.com/Products/Show...nce+Rail+Valve

I have been meaning to check and see if a fuel rail on the B8 uses something similar. Getting those back seats off looks quite fun.

Yes there is a valve like this on the fuel rail. You can see it right from the engine bay. It's right where the rigid line coming from the HPFP connects to the fuel rail.

Can't really help on changing the fuel filter, but all I can say is that my S.A. (a very honest and thorough guy) recommends that I change it at every major oil change (15k,25k,35k,etc...) because it'll keep the injectors healthy, and they aren't expensive to change.

I've done so since 25k (now 65k), and my car has had zero engine related issues.

    Hope this helps.

Have you been having the dealer do it?

    Yes, only the dealer.

I just checked my 65k service receipt, and they replaced my fuel filter ($54.99) + flushed my fuel system for a total of $95.00.

Actually sounds like a steal of a deal for the work and parts involved (new seal, filter, and new union nut and seat clips.)
I need to call and ask them. Good looking out.

My bad, I misread my receipt! (Dealer's new receipt format is confusing)

"PERFORM VEHICLE FUEL SYSTEM SERVICE AS PER CUSTOMER REQUEST.
Installed 10104 : FUEL SYSTEM FLUSH AND REPLACE FUEL FILTER : 1@$54.99"
    Labor: $95.00
    Sub Total: $149.99

IMO, $149.99 is still a good deal for every 10k miles...

$150 for me every 10K miles would be hard to swallow... but i agree not totally outrageous for something that is beneficial to an engines health.

Thanks for posting up the diagrams. I was hoping we might get some kind of result from the valve opening earlier. The B7's were able to get a little bit out of this simple mod.

It would be worth a shot. It's an easy mod. I personally can't find any specs on the valve in the b8 I know the b7 was rated to 126 bar.
Also don't know how much or many bar the high pressure fuel pump pushes on stage II or II+.
Would be curious to have that info though.

I did notice a slightly better pull through the gears at above 4k rpm.
The true test will be when I retune my car with the APR stage II and see if the power hesitations (spasms) are still there.
Hope to have it retuned shortly.

Just did this myself, and it was easy enough except for the union nut. Anyone have a link or name to the tool that Audi uses to remove it? Myself, I used a hammer and screwdriver as instructed in this DIY, and stripped about half of the ridges on the union nut before I finally twisted it off enough for it to come off. Good thing the DIY clearly states to get a new union nut, and this isn't even an OPTION guys!!! Try to get the angle as acute as possible (keep the screwdriver angled low), and hammer away quickly but with enough force.

Lots of fuel will be in the filter and get all over the place. Also, if you don't plug the fuel line hole, every time you hammer, you'll splash fuel all over the place, so it's key to do this.

Removing the whole assembly is a bit cumbersome. I removed the upper part, and not certain I reseated it properly (although by feel, it slid right into place).

Started the vehicle up afterwards, and no issues whatsoever. It'll be a few more days until the next fuel-up, but so far no adverse effects. Would recommend that everyone has this service performed. Quality (or lack thereof) of North American fuel is regularly something over-estimated by German auto manufacturers.

Just ordered my filter for $41.64 shipped from autohausaz. Planning to do this every 50k miles like I did on my B6. The union nut on the B6 was metal, not sure why they changed it :(

Crap, I found a place that sells them for even cheaper :-0

I'm liking the fact that we can get these filters for less than the price of 5qts of synthetic oil lol

Just used this DIY to change my filter out at 80K miles. Thanks OP!

    None scientific comparison below:

Blew through the new one: Was like blowing through a straw.

Blew through the old one after draining gas out of it: Was like blowing through a straw into a milkshake.

Engine revs faster now and the car feels more responsive on the road.

Great DIY! I just completed this with 84k+ miles and it's made a huge difference in performance - perfectly smooth now under acceleration. I have a couple additional tips that should be helpful. First, there are two locations, 180 degrees apart facing each rear door, where there are ring locks through a simple toothed latch. You will need to hold these away from the ring so it will rotate freely. Second, if you can get somebody to help, have each of you tap a screwdriver with a hammer on opposite sides together - this will loosen the ring very quickly!

Did the the fuel filter change, the Union nut is definitely a pain to get off, even with the tooth and latch pushed down.Didn't remove the whole pump, just the top but I had some trouble getting the bobber to seat correctly, even tally got it. Ran the car and is was fine so think everything is good. Putting the seat in was a lot easier with the plastic brackets removed.

All in all, glad i saved myself the money and changed the fuel filter. THANKS for the write up.

Also ordered the OEM filter from ECS and it came with plastic tabs to disengage the pump.

o Grommet for the seats 4L0886373 (x2) They can be reusable but I broke both of them.
    o Fuel Filter 8K0201511A
    o Union Nut 4F0201375
    o Pump Seal 4F0919133B
    o ****Disposable Rags****

Pictures not working. Can you fix please?

So I just tried to have this done yesterday at my independent Audi shop and apparently the part for the B8 is slightly different than the B8.5 (which I have). So the part I ordered above did not fit.... According to them the B8.5 part is one letter different but also over 250 bucks compared to 40. Multiple dealers have refused to help me because they say it's a lifetime part and the only thing they're willing to do is swap out the whole fuel pump..... Nope.

If anybody here can help me find the correct fuel filter for the B8.5 model I'd really appreciate it... Having issues finding it (unless the shop yesterday was wrong and this filter really does fit. They had the back seat off/ tank open and everything and said it didn't work

I'm at just over 90,000 miles and have some high load hesitation going on so I'd like to swap it out

Your shop probably saw part 8K0201511TA, which looks like the filter with the flange on it.

Lifetime part.... The resistance of my old one vs the replacement was pretty significant. If you've put around 4,000 gallons of gas through the thing, you would expect it to have filtered some contaminants and have lower flow than desired.
