Audi concert 2g to mmi 3g retrofit

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am about to make a start on this upgrade, there may be others who want I notice o do the same so I will post the steps I am taking in the hope that it might help others. Any advice or info from anyone who has done this before would be greatly appreciated.

To begin, I have bought Audi 3g centre console and Harman 3g mmi head unit, these parts are from an a5 but I understand they are the same.

After removal of my concert head unit and centre console the first thing i notice is that the wiring loom is not the same and the correct plugs are not on the concert loom as unused plugs.

I am looking for a solution to the wiring and will post with my solution.

I will subscribe just to see how this goes.
Not willing to make the jump yet because of no time and money, also horrible weather here in north.
But I'd love to see a successful conversion.

No offence, but to me it sounds like you have no idea just how involved and expensive this project is. The first issue is that the MMI system use a MOST fiber optic cable for data transfer, where as the Radios (Chorus, Concert, Symphony) use CAN gateway. The MMI systems always have a separate amplifier and a CD changer too, so you will need at least the following:
    - Wiring loom for MOST
    - new CAN gateway, which supports MOST
    - Headunit / CD changer
    - Center console controls
    - MMI navigation DVD unit
    - Amplifier compatible with MOST

Kufatec in Germany make a wiring loom, but it's very expensive. Obtaining one from a totaled car is possible but A LOT of work to take out of the car and heavily integrated in to all other wiring looms, so it's not a good idea.

Thanks for all the info, I am willing to go all the way with this. I work with vehicle electronics so I do have a vague idea of what has to be done.
It will be expensive but it is possible. There will be others who want to do this I hope that they will at least be able to use this as a guide.
@TDIaholic I appreciate every single little piece of advice or info so no offence taken.
Most of you will know what a standard 10 speaker concert setup looks like but I'm going to put a 'before' picture up anyway ...

I will get some more images of the parts I have bought already next chance I get.

Subscribed! Depending on how this turns out and how much it costs I might do the same.

Looking forward to following - good luck!

My shopping list and parts already bought, just before I go ahead and post the list I want to just note that this retrofit is on the 9vd speaker configuration.(If anyone wants to know what this is and what the difference is between speaker configurations just let me know . )

Ok so I have the following:
    1. Main MMI Unit 8R2 035 652 A
    2. Centre console control unit 8T0 919 611 WFX
    3. Climate Control Panel 8K2 820 043 AH
    4. Most Can Gateway 8T0 907 468 G
    5. Custom retrofit loom from DeKuTec Germany

    Still to find:
3g MMI Screen and dash trim
    Possibly seperate radio tuner.

If anyone wants to know anything else about anything I've listed just ask.

The 3gMMI main unit I bought came from a car breaker, I don't know what features it has so if anyone has the same one in their car and can tell me whats in the MMI unit I'd be very greatful. Here are a few photos of the unit ...

P.S Sorry about the sideways pictures

Why are you changing the AC unit? To obtain the new type seat heating controls?

Hi, I have to change the climate controls because the programming on the 3gmmi is supposedly different, I don't have heated seats, but I noticed that the buttons are in different places. I wanted to make sure that I didn't buy the new style climate control panel for nothing so I tried them on the car with the concert setup and they don't work. The control panel lights up for a few seconds then the 'off' button starts flashing. The blower comes on and the controls become unresponsive. Of course when I have the new system installed I'll let you know if the same is true.

Thanks the main reason is that I would like to have nav and bluetooth in the car without having to stick things that look out of place in the car, it will kind of bring the car a bit more up to date and not to mention I enjoy the challenge.

I'm a bit stuck with how I'm going to mount the mmi main unit, im the b8 the concert is a double din sized unit, its held on with 4 bolts behind the facia with 4 small tabs, the harman/becker unit is single din sized, there are no tabs to secure it, instead there are 2 little clips on either side. Can anyone with a single din unit tell me how theyre mounted in or even have a photo of the setup?

Din problem solved, there is a single din add in that I have only been able to source from an Audi parts dealer, not too expensive at around £50. I will put the part number up in my final list.

IIRC, this mod requires converting your copper MOST cables into fibre MOST cabling, right? Is it just re-running the wires through the dash and lower door-sill trim to the trunk-based units, or are there other things that need to be hooked up?

Hi amz, its not so much coverting your copper cables, you need to add the fibre optics, the 3g mmi system uses these for data transfer between units, you have to route cables to the can gateway which you would swap out for your factory fitted one, you would only need to route fibre optic cables to the trunk if you were planning on having any accessories mounted there. My system has nav and bluetooth built in to the main unit in the dash, I will be adding a digital tv/radio tuner as its not built in to the main unit but it looks like it would fit in the extra din slot. The only other accessory that I can think of you might want in your trunk is a dvd changer. None of this should affect your amplifier if you have 9vd or b&o. I am still waiting on parts and havn't started fitting yet, I'll let you know if I find out otherwise during install.

I thought the GPS antenna was external to the MMI unit? This mod becomes a whole lot easier if you don't need to run all the cables into the trunk (not that popping off the sill trim is hard...) There is also the Audi Parking System which I believe has a module that sits in the trunk.

I'm not sure about the parking system module, your right the antenna is external but its just a copper wire connection, you have the option of roof mount or under dash mount. I've ordered the under dash one because its cheaper, easier to install and doesn't need painted.

It might be component protected. Could be the reason why it's not working. MMI and media player is also component protected.

That could be the case, I have a couple of specialist diagnostic tools here. When I have time I'll check to see what's going on with it.

The PDC module doesn't need to be changed as it's the same for the radio and NAV equipped cars. It's not hooked up to the MOST, only the parts for the infotainment are part of the MOST bus. All the rest are still connected to the CAN as usual.

It is an updated display, plus you will get navigation indication (such as when to turn).

Yes - at least in the US there is one which only displays in red (like temperature display) and one in color.

Ahh right so there is only one type of full colour dash display? If so I already have it, I knew there was a red monochrome screen but I didnt think it was a common one.

I actually do not know if there are multiple color screens. I can tell you, for example, if I am using navigation my display will show a blue arrow for turning direction, if checking cars efficiency it shows a bar graph with green.

The reason I ask is because I have never seen an audi map sd card, its only ever dvds, do you need to download data from the dvd to the sd card to make it work?

IIRC, the sd card is only needed for Gooogle Maps capability on 2013+ models. On all other navigation models (and mine is a 2012), no sd card is required to operate the navigation functions.
