How long did your front and rear rotors last?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just curious. I'm at 32K miles and have only replaced the front pads so far (at 19K miles). Just purchased sets of front and rear pads and plan to have them replaced next week but not certain if rotors will need to be as well. I like buying my own parts, replacing myself when I can or having a reputable shop do so. Should I have rotors ready to go just in case?

I replaced my pads and rotors at 35k miles. Rotors probably still had a little life in them, but were nearing the spec for replacing so I just did everything at the same time. Pads still had some life as well, but I couldn't stand the brake dust.

Yes, according to the dealership, when I had it in to check issue with hood latch, they said the front pads are about done. Probably a couple thousand miles early since I had not gotten any warnings but decided to get them done at that time anyway.

Okay it sounds like the rotors are still fine but how I went through the front pads in 19K miles when most here seem to be 2-3X that is surprising.

55k and pads are great. Rotors are starting to get a little warping, but staying strong!

You said your stealership told you the pads were about done.
If that doesn't throw up a red flag that answers your question, I don't know what does. ;)
Unless your tracking your car or something, pads should last a minimum of 30k, if not 50k or more depending on driving style.
And same with rotors… unless defective or under a lot of stress, they should last much longer.

When I sold the 2009 A4, it had 46kish on it and the brakes were fine. The rear pads had plenty of material left. The fronts were around 7mm, or "fair" category. They likely had about another 5-10k left on them.

Driving behavior has a lot to do with how long brakes last. Most of the mileage on my car is not easy highway driving, but I don't slam on the brakes all that often. Slow and steady acceleration and stopping (anticipating and coasting down to a stop) will increase the life of the parts and increases fuel economy. The owner's manual will back this up.

could be a sign that something is wrong with the braking system if the pads wore out that fast. or it could be driving style. whole bunch of reasons pads can wear out faster for one driver compared to another. or your pads were not near the limit and the dealer pilfered your wallet.
as far as the rotors are concerned, there are wear limits specified for the rotor. you can measure your rotor and see how close you are to the limits.

at 55k and its all still good. when i went to a dealer for squeaky brakes, they said it might be time to replace the brake pads. I went to another to inspect them, they said I still have 80% pad left. so you might be getting canned

Well to be honest I trust my dealer quite a bit. They have taken care of me on many occasions with other issues, far and beyond what I've read with others experience with theirs on these forums. My driving habits are not very aggressive but that's relative I suppose. I don't see (so far) anyone getting close to the low pad life I had. I'll keep monitoring the forum but also check with my service rep as to reasons, besides driving habit, why my pads only lasted 19K miles. Thanks for the feedback.

^^ check rockauto.com they have good cheap parts. yes 3-400 is enough, 300 is more like what you'd spend on front and rear, for rotors and brake pads.

and i replaced my OEM pads at 55k and have been on posiquiet ceramic ones since and they are still ok, been 20k miles since and should last at least another 20k or so. i still have my original rotors and car has 75k miles. but im planning on changing rotors next time i do pads. the general guideline is to replace rotors every other brake pad change, thats usually how long they'll last and recommended to change.

My brake pad sensor came on last week at 52k. I'll replace all four corners, both rotors and pads. Leaning toward Akebono ceramic pads, and Stoptech slotted rotors.

    1 of 2 things:

1, They are lying and the pads are fine. You can easily confirm this by taking a minute to look at the pad.

2, there is something wrong with your brakes. Maybe a caliper is stuck or the rotor is damaged and causing premature wear to the pad.

Im a Bit surprised they are not investigating the fact that they went so quickly, especially since you dont track it, but they see a lot of,cars maybe its not out of the ordinary. I got 70k out of the front pads and rotars and still hadn't changed my original rear pads and rotors by the time I traded it in with 97k minor warp going on past 60k on fronts
