James Bond Style Smoke Screen...!!!

So, after my post last night about a whistling noise when off boost, followed by this morning's addendum to include losing power on the highway, I left work early with the intention of limping the car home the 40 odd miles and checking the DV for leaks. I had barely driven 50 yards before I checked my rear view mirror and discovered that the world behind me had been drowned in a sea of thick white smoke. I drove for another mile hoping the smoke would thin out but it just got thicker and when I eventually pulled over the entire road was completely obscured. It was poring from the tailpipe almost like a liquid. James Bond's DB5 smokescreen had nothing on this and you couldn't see more than a few feet...!!!

So, not sure what failed in the end but it doesn't look good. AAA dropped it at my local Audi dealer who were astonished at the amount of smoke when I drove it off the back of the tow truck. After reversing off, I had to sit for around 30-40 seconds while the smoke cleared in front of me so I could see to drive forward.

The video shows the car at idle producing only a fraction of the smoke and the engine sounds like a bag of nails.

Oil in the combustion. The car was doing this from cold within a 100 yards so the exhaust wouldn't have been hot enough to burn the oil.

Whether from the intake or directly in the cylinder is yet to be determined. Either could be fairly expensive.

Not sure if it is related to the previous symptoms but likely it is, which probably means oil in the intake.

The whistle you heard was the sound that your PCV was making as it failed. Now that it failed, air is getting pushed into your crank case forcing oil past the rings and into your turbo.

At least that is what happens if you incorrectly boost leak check your car and then you start it. (Creates a smoke screen)

Definitely. It is a massive internal boost leak! No CEL because the air pasted through all the sensors fine, but then leaked internally.

You don't always know you are dying from internal bleeding..well until your dead!

Funny that there was no smoke this morning during the loss of power. It was like 3 distinct phases: whistle - loss of power but whistle gone - lots of smoke and no power.

Hopefully a new PCV will fix it and I may even see normal oil consumption afterwards? I wouldn't care, but I've always driven this thing like an old man as I'm slowly turning into my dad.

Easy way to check, sniff the exhaust (not too much or you might get high!)

If it smells very bitter its oil.
Sweet = coolant
dirty=regular exhaust
Salty = too many french fries cooked in the vegetable oil before you put it in the tank!

Well if you are catted, you may have an issue there depending on how much oil is pushed through so I would take that off and check it out. (if test pipe, remove and clean)

The new PCV should help with oil consumption unless you are having other issues like cylinder wall scoring etc..

Well... it's at the dealers right now so I can't do much of anything right now.

Not sure if you'd seen any of my previous posts regarding my oil consumption? In short, the dealer replaced the PCV valve due to TSB around 18 months ago shortly after which time the oil consumption went from less than 1QT per 10,000 miles to 1QT every 1200 miles. Audi have done 2 oil consumption tests (they botched the first) and declared everything within limits. The sudden, rather than gradual increase in consumption after the PCV valve change always had me suspecting that as the culprit. Being that it may well have failed despite it being the upgraded item within 25,000 miles leads me to believe it was always at least somewhat faulty to begin with. Like I said before, I drive like my old dad so the PCV valve hasn't had a stressful existence.

Front machine guns are obsolete. The new technology is lasers. Its also the fool proof way to win a race with another Audi with BT .

I bought the car from Nashua but when I took it there due to some intermittent CELs they said they could only read them if the light was on. I knew this to be incorrect but they refused to read them despite the fact I'd made an appointment and driven down there early one morning before work. Later the same day I called Stratham and relayed the story. They read the codes and did the work all covered by the CPO. I have still had some issues with Stratham but on the whole they've been okay. I would never go back to Nashua for service or to buy a car.

Blown turbo... oil throughout the system. Audi quoted $7500 to replace turbo, exhaust system, PCV, ICs, etc... What the hell would you need to replace the ICs. Robbing bastards...!!!

Buy a used k03, delete the PCV, and clean the oil out of the exhaust and intercoolers. <$500 easy if you do it yourself.

There's a number of memebers with k03s that I'm sure you can get for a few hundred. Install yourself or take it to an Indy.
