Anyone SUCCESSFULLY get steering wheel controls to work with aftermarket radio??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Been searching for hours. I found a lot of people posting about them NOT working.. Looking to see if anyone has had some success with any of the various adapters..

I put a new aftermarket deck in the (2001) Allroad. Love it so far, but really want to get the steering wheel controls to work. According to the Metra Axxess website, the ASWC-1 was supposed to work. I bought that, and nope. I tried their instructions for Bose and non Bose, and nothing worked. I followed up with their tech support, and after a ton of troubleshooting they said "Sorry, won't work. Nothing we can do".. And since I opened it & tried installing it per their instructions, I can no longer return it. Working on the place I bought it to take it back, but not important for this.

It looks like PAC makes a unit called "SWI-Jack". According to their site, it works with a 2000 C5, and works with 2002-2005. WTF?! I don't know what would be different about a 2001 from an 02 or 00. I think 02+ was Can Bus, so that makes sense, but the 2000 thing? I emailed them, awaiting response. If I get that, I will make sure I get it from a good return policy place.

I am sure there is a few others out there.. Anyone had any luck with any of them?

I've got an R8 wheel in my A6 running a kenwood 9980 the buttons and switches work perfectly.
They were installed as part of Steve2.7's build by Edge Motors. I bought his car last year and it's running great!
If you search the forum for a6 rs6 conversion you'll see pics on the last couple of pages with Edge's number in NY.

I have the headliner that used to be in Steve's car. However, I do not have an R8 steering wheel. Not really looking for a shop, and I am well aware of Edge. Looking for someone who has had success with an adapter/module that makes *A6* steering wheel controls work with aftermarket radios..

It is not hard, just need the right interface for the right brand name unit. http://www.pac-audio.com/swi/ The RC model is the one we use which works with most brands.

    Installation instructions for 2001.

Have you successfully got it to work with a 2001 C5 with Bose?

Yes, it was on my 2001 before I changed the steering wheel. The RC is the only model made to work with most units and be easy to install. The X model is universal, but much harder to install, you need a remote control to properly program it, and it does not work on some models.

Excellent!! And your 2001 was a Bose car, correct? So all I need is the PAC SWI-RC? Just making sure, because the Axxess ASWC-1 said it was compatible on their website, but it turned out to not be..

When I had everything apart, I took photos of the harness. So I could troubleshoot with Metra/Axxess. The wires they said I would need, either didn't exist (blank in the harness) or were the wrong color, or they didn't work when hooked up. When I looked at the instructions for the PAC SWI-RC and compared with my pics, it looks like I have the wire they say to hook up!

Swirc's/swijacks are pretty much the same thing.

I have had so little luck getting steering wheel controls to work in c5's that I don't even offer them to customers with c5's any more.

I've tried both swirc's as well as aswc's. Same result.

The difference between the years is that one uses analog data, and the other uses can data. If you send me a pic of the wire side of the harness that has the bose and changer wiring in it, I could tell you if it's wired for can at the radio or not. Should be a brown red/brown yellow (or something similar) in a twisted pair in that plug.

We use the Axxess piece too because it is easier since it auto detects, but we used the PAC on my 2000 and 2001 which both worked and both have Bose.

Finally got around to installing the SWI-RC today. So far it DOES NOT work... Everything connected fine. It even programmed fine, based on the LED confirmations that I was indeed hitting the steering wheel buttons. After programming, and more confirmation LED flashes, it still does not allow the steering wheel buttons to control my Kenwood deck.

I called PAC tech support. They walked me through all the steps, and they were all correct. Then we broke out the volt meter. The (white/yellow) wire that was tapped on the car side was indeed live, and the voltage at the wire indeed changed when pressing steering wheel buttons. But the (blue/yellow) wire that goes from the module to the Kenwood deck had no voltage at all. They claim that means it is defective. Who knows..

At this point, I am really losing interest in the whole idea.

Maybe defective, it happens. I wished I still had mine hooked up to test that wire to see if it had power or not. Shouldn't change anything, but I had both Pioneer models in my Audi's.

Most likely just going to return both modules. This has already taken more time & more money than the steering wheel controls are worth to me..
