    Hanging gas pedal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just realized I never noticed during any test drives that the S4 I have on order has a hanging gas pedal. My 2010 MKVI GTI not only had aluminum pedals long before the B8 facelift, but also a floor mounted gas pedal:

I suppose if I didn't notice during either test drive it shouldn't make too big a difference, but the hanging accelerator seems much less cool. Like MKIV Jetta status.

So with VW now offering floor mounted pedals in it's lineup (I can't even say it is a performance model feature, my wife's Tiguan has one too) I am surprised the S4 still rocks the floater. Anyone else? What is Audi thinking?

Yes I agree. It is weird but doesn't make a huge difference for me. I guess for heel toe down shifting it would but I have a dsg so not a big deal. Porsche has a floor mounted one as does BMW.

I liked the floor mounted pedal in my BMW 3 series a lot better than this one. But I've gotten used to it. It's just a lot smaller to "find it" with your foot.

Good point about manual vs. DSG... Having two pedals will make it easier to find the little baby gas pedal!

It certainly isn't a "performance" only feature of a car as my Range Rover has a floor mounted gas pedal. I would definitely say that it is the norm in the premium segment though and it has always bothered me that Audi continues to use the floating gas pedal. It doesnt fit the look of my RS5 to have the same style pedal as a Camry. But as other have said, from behind the wheel, it doesnt make a noticeable difference.

I just can't figure out why they'd have it in a VW but not an Audi...

I prefer hanging gas pedals. I've driven a few cars with floor mounted ones (including spending almost 4 weeks in a G37 with one) and just couldn't get used to them. I have much better throttle control with the hanging pedal, and it's more relaxing to me on long drives.

Maybe this is because I'm 6'5" and I sit "too close" to the pedals so that I can be at a good distance to the steering wheel. This means that my right foot is at almost a 45 degree angle (duck-footed) when on the accelerator.

VW's (GTI and GLI) had the flat bottom steering wheel first as well... Probably because the VW enthusiast community is larger than that of Audi.

True... I'd have had a hard time paying over twice as much as I did for my GTI if they didn't get it together for the B8.5.

Maybe the moral of this story is how good the MKVI GTI is...

The A3 is pretty sporty, in a GTI kind of way....

Is a hanging pedal more luxurious??

yeah, about as luxurious as a Nissan Versa...

A3, TT, Golf and GTI are all the same platform. Essentially the same car with different shells that got tuned by different Engineers. They all start life as the same car, that's why they all have floor mounted pedals. I've had floor mounted pedals in my 325 xi, 128i, Golf TDI, and Audi A3. didn't think much of it, until I didn't have it.

Now, my right knee hurts when I drive my B8.5, bummer...

Never had any issues and every car I've had to date has always had a normal top mounted gas pedal and not a floor mounted one. I guess it's personal preference but I've not had issues heal-toeing in the last few cars I've had before I went DSG.

The only reason is because guys in Head office in Germany have their heads up their ass.
Audi has the worst brand management of the Germans. You figure that with complaints about product differentiation that they do a better job.
VW may have a larger enthusiast community but the S4 cost a lot more and is their enthusiast sport sedan so you would figure if they want to compete against the might 3er that they pay more attention to the details. If they can do it for the GTI than they should be able to do it for the S4 or other S cars.

I personally find it more natural to heel-toe with the hanging pedal as both the brake and throttle move in the same arc. Hanging brake and floor mounted throttle felt a little weird in my E46.
