For Those Thinking Of Doing The 3.0TDI Intercooler Upgrade

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have no affiliation with RockAuto.Com at all, but I saw that they have the Nissens (OE) brand 3.0TDI intercooler in-stock for $170, ECS had them for $360 but are on backorder, and you would be looking at $500+ shipped from across the pond. I pulled the trigger on it after reading a post in here about how it has 30% more capacity and requires only some very minor shroud trimming to bolt in. I know TDI's operate at high boost pressure so it should be a nice OEM+ sleeper upgrade perfect for the chipped daily driver. I will post my 2c after installing it.

It looks like a great bang for the buck mod. The guy on the other FMIC thread posted up the side panels which are also OEM and work without trimming.

Cool idea. I was thinking of doing the same here. because there are more 3.0tdi cars in Germany and Im sure they are not too expensive.

Hell, any intercooler on this car is a sleeper. FMIC are nealy invisible, even to the untrained eye.

And yes I agree looks like great bang for the buck.

I am excited to hear some more results on this. This would be a good interim option as I don't want to drop $1,000 on a FMIC just yet. I also see the price as $233.

Hi guys, when I ordered mine on 1/10 the site said they had 3 in stock at $169, they must have sold out of those (and how can they not) so maybe the re-order was more expensive? Idk, but mine shipped the same day from Texas and arrived last week, I am just waiting for the radiator shrouds to come in and some warmer weather before I install it. If you are still interested in getting this intercooler I found them here for $135 not sure who manufactures them but the price looks promising. Ill let everyone know once I get it installed!

I found one on Ebay UK, you don't need it, you can just trim your existing one, but I wanted it just in case I wasn't happy.

I really like that I found this post. I quickly gave up on FMIC after I saw the cost. I think they are going for around $1k now, for ~20chp gains at most. But, if I can do it for under $200, well then now we're talking.

I haven't read the threads everyone keeps referring to, so I want to when I get some time. I really want to know how the +30% capacity was determined. I'd also love to hear anything you do different for install from the DIYs already out there.

Just thinking out load here people...
I always like to have a test when I do a mod, to prove to myself that it's worth it. Since FMIC performance is based on airflow i'm not sure a dyno would be the best test (possible to accurately simulate airflow?). Probably a 0-60 or 1/4mile would be best. I always ignored the temp sensors on the Torque app, I can put those to use for the test as well.

I'm interested in this because of where I live and what I plan to do. For $300+, I can't justify a grand plus for another solution.

Really interested in why you guys are going with the tdi intercooler instead of an aftermarket. The design is just as poor and uses those horrible weak fins. Is it simply price or do you actually have proof that it will provide significantly better cooling?

The fellow from Norway has reduced temps of 10c, which is quite significant.

I bought mine from Rockauto for $171 and that is a pretty inexpensive mod if you ask me. Having a new 2014 Ducati Panigale doesn't leave me a lot of extra cash laying around to mod my Audi with $1000 FMIC anymore.

I'm not worrying about a cobby FMIC anyway. Since I don't have the K04 yet this A7 Tdi FMIC will work just fine.

Go ahead and spend your money on a nice FMIC and we can compare logs once I get mine installed.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. The aftermarket options cost around six times as much as this OEM solution, so they are the ones that need to be justified. The question should be: do you have proof that they provide significantly better cooling than this much cheaper option? We already know this one performs better than the stock cooler based on the logs done a year or two ago.

    did this a few weeks,ago...

yes, direct bolt on. i had to trim a little from the shroud as this unit is bigger. very easy with some good shears.

30% bigger... this is an 8l core vs the stock 6l. so 30%.

i got my ic from the hans auto link below. cheap shipping to east coast.

i would 100% recommend installing the eurocode truefit kit with this ic. you also get the larger turbo outlet. this is a must have for this mod!

overall, 3 hour instal time. very easy install.

i am more than happy with the upgrade. $400 bones in total. slightly more turbo sound.

    Regards,
Ordered these last week. I assume they are the same as the ecode ones, just at a better price point. Plus, they are in Canada (hard to find Canadian vendors. It helps a lot with shipping and duties.) My only gripe is that you would think a canadian company, shipping from canada, would have their prices in CAN$, but nope. Not the greatest surprise, but still cheaper than ec.

These are nice pieces. I have just the silicon hose kit.. as I already had the Ecode turbo inlet hose. I installed the 3.0 intercooler last night, along with the Ecode HFIP.. haven't had much drive time.. as I finished around 10pm last night.. and had to work today.

Hey buddy plz share your feelings with the new IC. Plz try to start with Launch Control and measure the 0-62 acceleration... Guys from Revo Technik advised me to upgrade IC for better acceleration... so i wonder if it really helps...

I cant tell a huge difference really. Slightly more turbo noise, slightly more turbo lag from a stop, slightly more acceleration >3000 rpm's. I probably wont see much benefit until later in the summer...

that's the point. I've analyzed charts of almost all aftermarket ICs and noticed that temp with stock IC rises after 3k rpm's... As we can see stock IC handles intake temp up to 3k...once the engine go beyond 3k rmp's the temp goes up while aftermarket ICs more or less stabilize it...

Let me know the what you think of the difference before and after installing them. I am going to see what the hoses and the turbo outlet do in terms of low rpm turbo lag, and possibly order the Ecode HFIP as well a little after that. I am only stage 1+ so I am not sure if I would really benefit from an intercooler upgrade right now..

I got it all installed for few days now and I can tell there is difference. Car pulls much faster and stronger. I mean the turbo kick in much quicker and u can fell it. I think it's much better now in a hot day seems like car don't care about temps now. I'm. Happy with upgrade for 400$

Do you have the other mods to go along with it as well (silicone hoses, turbo outlet, HFIP)?

I got all CTS intercooler piping and turbo adapter, spulen intake pipe and aFe filter and EC sound box delete pipe. And I'm APR stage 2 with ec HFC.

Wondering if it really works. I would like to have black intercooler, not for gains just for the look behind rs4 grille.

I use black radiator paint, it is supposed to allow better temp transfer than regular paint. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Eastwood-Radia...radiator+paint
