    Oil Filter Recommendation?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Oil change soon, time to switch to synthetic and make sure I have a large oil filter. I was going to grab the Bosch 72199WS. Is that a 'large' one or can I go bigger?

U supose to run synthetic in our cars from factory to prevent future sludge and other problems. But latter is better than never. The filter u posted is normal and look the same as I'm running now on my 3.0. You can go on ecstuning.com and order mann higher capacity.
19" BBS CK wheels, Bilstein PSS9 coilovers, 034motorsport front adj. control arms and rear swaybar, Vw Brembo 4-piston front brakes, b7 rear brakes, StopTech SS Brake Lines, Sprint Booster.

I have a Mobil 1 high capacity on my 3.0 now. You can't really go wrong with those, Mann, or Bosch.

are you guys seriously buying from ECS at those insane shipping prices?

Napa Gold filters are very highly rated, quality filters and they often have sales at the end of month.
    Great filters, get them local.

Lots of auto parts stores can actually get mann filters. My local car quest can order them in actually. You just have to ask.

    No lol

W94025 @ Rockauto.com for $4.90 each, usually an online coupon for 5% off, which almost negates shipping. I buy in 5 to 10 quantity to make the shipping worth it. I go through a lot of filters...

Since you're in Canada part source and Canadian tire stores carry the large Mann filters depending on location, if you ever order from Rock auto throw a few in your cart if they ship from the same warehouse

    MANN w950/4

The MANN w950/4 is the biggest oil filter you can get for the A4. It is made for Volkswagen transporter/trucks and has the same bypass pressure. It is bigger than the so called bigger oil filter. It doesn't get any bigger than this, it will hold more oil and help you extend your oil change interval. I got mine at my local CARQUEST for 11 bucks.

    Here is an ebay link,
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MANN-FILTER-...a0fe52&vxp=mtr

I run the w950/4 filter with Motul 8100 Xcess oil. I go about 8-10k per change and no sludge issues.

You have options with this size filter as well, part numbers and brands are:
    MANN w950/4
    Fram PH4854
    Hengst H19w06
    Knecht/Mahle OC 105
    Purflux LS582
    Tecnocar R240

However if you don't mind changing you're oil often you can use a smaller filter and less quality oil.
But don't get lazy and leave cheap oil and filter on for over 3k miles.

I run NAPA Gold filters in all my stuff. Mostly made by Wix, I think. NAPA also carries a small number of Mann filters at some stores, and can order any Mann filter you want.

When I bought my car, it had a giant sized Mobile1 filter. I deciding which filter to use at my first OC, I read somewhere that the Mobile1 filter's bypass valve was set way lower than the OEM recommendation. Don't remember where I read it, or know how accurate the info was, but I decided to avoid the Mobile1 in the future.

Yes... Never knew this. I like it.

What does that bring the total oil capacity to, 5+ quarts?

the 950 is huge, but honestly probably overkill.

I'm running the 940/25 and even that is a pain to maneuver in the engine bay due to its size. I would imagine removing it when its full of oil is an exercise in patience or trying not to murder everyone in sight after you spill oil all over your engine bay, subrame, and driveway/garage/street/self.

I think at least 5 quarts. Motul comes in 5 liter jugs and I'm not sure what the conversion is exactly, like .25 more in a liter I think.

    lol so true.

I think Old Guy turned me onto using a bag to catch it all, so I started using a white garbage bag wrapped around the oil cooler and hanging from other stuff, while removing and cleaning it up for the new filter.

Yea a gallon sized ziplock helps for sure, but I still get a little spillage. A 3 gallon garbage bag would be the best bet however, I never considered a regular garbage bag...

Ha, that was the thread you referred me to bags, makes sense now why my washer fluid jug didn't work for the job when I cut it up, I did it upside down. How do you hold that in there?

The V6 engines are so nice for oil changes, filter and plug right next to each other.

Exactly. I just shove it up behind the filter and it gets wedged in place. Remove the filter and all the oil drips down into the neck portion of the jug.
