Love my S4 butttt the new Allroad seems so practical!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My current situation is that I have a 2010 that is pretty much done being modded and I have dumped a ton of money into it. It is a prestige package GIAC st. 2+ CPO 6yr/100,000. I have 49xxx on the dial. My options are obviously to keep the S4 which I do love or try to trade into an allroad with the options I want (monsoon, mmi, B&O, CPO - low miles). This would extend my warranty by 3 years and also jump into an Audi with updated mmi and also get away from the horrible to maintain brilliant black. I'm thinking I could try to see what I can get modded at a carmax or privately. Or spend the money to part out and return to stock which would be a pain in the ass. I have found a few with the options I want for around 37-38k and I have good credit. Leasing could also be an option.

The allroad just seems much more practical for a guy my age (25) who has a larger sized labradoodle dog (extra space in back would be nice) and doesn't make a ton of money (warranty is key). My S4 has been very reliable so far but if it is anything like my B5 the 80k-100k mark means $$. Also I am a seasonal firefighter and this is my only car so the clearance would be nice for traveling on rough roads. Overall I know I would miss the S4 a lot! Such a fun car that I do love but an allroad feels like the right move for my situation. I could also wait a year or two but worried about value and warranty decreasing value of trade in.

What are your thoughts on the new allroad and my situation? Trade in options, etc.? Thanks!

My lease is up in about 3 weeks and have been considering an Allroad as a replacement as well. Only thing I can say is, finding an Allroad with all the options I want has been almost impossible. That's good you've found a few that already meet your needs though. I've heard nothing but great things about the 2.0 in the Allroad, in addition to it being a fun car to drive. Obviously it's a very different driving experience, but there are a few members on here that have both a B8 S4 and Allroad (e.g. JOS4AUDI) and seem to get enjoyment out of both. I'd say go with whatever makes the most sense for you!

Bad move. Allroad is a Vermont car. Keep your S4 in SoCal. I called Audi and there are exactly 0 people aged 25 with a titled Allroad in their name.

I would tend to agree. You shouldn't need to worry about space yet. Plenty of time for that - enjoy the S4. You have a lot invested in it.

I like the look of the wagon but I would never give up my S4 for it. I can understand for your dog however. For me the power and look of the S4 is just too great. Maybe one day the S4 wagon will come to the US.

Yes, so you are saying thats why it wouldn't come to the US this year. Maybe the B9 would make it here in wagon form but probably not. They also probably don't want to have to go through our regulations in the US and it would be a very limited market most likely.

I'm 24 I really thought about getting an Allroad, I drove one and I really liked it. I just felt like it was extremely underpowered. This pretty much made my decision to just go ahead with the S4. I have always wanted a S4 Wagon, but the Allroad just wasn't for me unless I lived in the mountains or I would get full use out of it.

Yes like you said if you live in the mountains then it is useful. If not the S4 is what you want. Also I know for me I want something I can at least modify a little. The S4 satisfies those!

Problem is, Audi isn't keen to make North America a major volume market (like bmw/merc do), as they're killing it selling cars in the far east for 2x the margin. Thus, given a finite production allocation, all wagons will do is steal sales from suvs which have higher margins and reduce cafe taxes (they classify as light trucks). It's kind of a zero-sum game unfortunately, people like us who want high performance wagons and manual transmissions are less than a drop in the bucket, they lol at us and sell 60k q5 to your neighbors wife.

Plus, they are starting up a Mexico plant to make q5's I think.

I'm a huge wagon fan but the Allroad is a dog. Even Audi salespeople will admit it is underpowered. I keep hearing "Audi's going to do something about that," that maybe they will add a sport Allroad to the line-up, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm not sure about your price range. Going from a S4 to a small SUV may not suit your driving tastes (it doesn't mine, and I hate to recommend getting one as they're why Audi abandoned the wagons in the US), but what about leasing a SQ5?

ETA: I should add I'm posting in the B8 S4 forum as I have a '14 manual on order. I'm actually selling my MDX. Even though I have two kids I never drive it. Very nice car for what it does, but it's too big to be my daily and too small to be the family hauler we really need (GL550 will be our next purchase in a couple years). Plus I wanted to be sure I had a newer Audi manual before they're extinct.

If they threw the 3.0T in the Allroad like they seem to be using across the Audi line I would reconsider....... Maybe...

My uncle bought an S4 wagon Stick B5 and he is the reason I got my S4! He would fly around shifting with his elbows, (He was a Trucker & the best driver I have ever met). He made me realize that you could have a fun sports car but also have the ability to have a more then a single bag in the trunk and room for your friends and family.A few years down the road he traded his S4 in and bought an ALL ROAD and he swears by them, it was awesome how we could drive through anything with really nice clearance, and all the other cool features that car had! It wasn't the fastest thing in the world, especially compared to his chipped S4 wagon, but he didn't care. I say with the dog, its definitely worth checking out, your car should make your life easier and be fun! I wouldn't part out the car either, even though its a rape usually at a stealership, it can be nice if the dealer finds a place to unload your car and give you a decent price.

I've been really digging TheGetawayer reviews... he's a big fan. I'd be into one if it came with a 3.2 V6 or 3.0T or even a 2.7T.... the 2.0t doesn't do anything for me in this type of vehicle.

I agree. I love the allroad, and was considering getting one to replace my x3, but I'm not paying that kind of money for a 4cyl... I wish they had a 3.0T option.

The 3.2 FSI has a peak torque of like 240 lb ft from 3-5k RPM, vs the 2.0T 260 lb ft from 2-4k RPM. Those bigger NA V6's are not what you want for daily driving compared to the throttle response of your 3.0 TFSI.

Awesome opinions lol...... From an actual Allroad owner its a great car not underpowered or a "dog" as someone said. We really didnt need the room just loved the car. Got rid of our A6 for the AR great move IMO. AR is so much more fun. I actually drive the AR more than my S4. Both have same mileage and S4 is a year older.

Have you considered keeping the S4 and finding an older C5 allroad?... I run that exact combo and love it... the great thing about the C5 allroad is that you have a lot of options out there performance wise... the downside is the huge maintenance/upkeep/repair expense that the car requires (more like demands)... weigh your options, it might be worth it to you

edit: just for some C5 love and representation in this thread

Love my S4 butttt the new Allroad seems so practical!

Had a c5 all road and moved to the s4. The c5 has plenty of mods, tons of utility, and can be great fun. Different animal entirely from the new allroad. Weaker engine, no manual trans, and no air suspension. Most c5 allroad owners don't consider it worthy of the allroad badge.

Have you looked at the SQ5? Nearly s4 motor, hatchback-ish like the allroad for utility...

It's because of THIS guy and THIS allroad that I spent an hour at the Audi dealership today driving an allroad (and an A7 for good measure). The weird thing is that the B8.5 allroad feels very different than the B8 A4 Avant I owned for a couple months last year. Same engine, transmission, interior (for the most part), but they felt like completely different cars. Maybe because the A4 was used when I got it and the allroad I test drove was brand new, but it felt like more than that. I love my S4, but I miss driving a wagon, so I could totally see myself in an allroad for my next car. I hope that Audi does something about the power, though. It's not as bad as some people are making it out to be, but to go from my S4 to the allroad, the power difference is noticeable. If Audi ever decides to put the 3.0T in an allroad and offer it with a DSG, I'll place an order that same day.

Off topic, but does the RS4 grille fit the allroad?

I really wish they offered the 3.0T or 3L TDI for the allroad.

Wouldn't a $600 APR tune take care of some of the underpowered complaints ? 265hp and 327tq isn't bad

It helped my B8 Avant some, but it could always use more. A K04 would go a long way in an allroad.

beautiful car. Amazing platform for visual mods, but yes, would need that as a 3.0
    Addicted at this point.

edit: Yeah Lakeshow, thatd be the one. But while we're on hypotheticals, i wouldnt kick an RS4 out of bed.

    Goegeous car man.
I guess with a stage 3 tune it would have some get-up-and-go. When done right these look phenominal - that's for damn sure (though I'm not feeling the super slammed ones)...
