Anyone have a rattle/ticking/clicking from the front left dash?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I've taken my car to the dealer twice now to have this fixed. It seems to come from behind the gauge cluster near the window. First time they put some felt tape back there. This past time they now say "it is normal because the car rides stiff"....right. Any ideas? Anyone else had this noise? I sure didn't have it in the S5.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Not sure the extent or how loud this sound you describe. I do hear the occasional click - mostly soft and low volume. I have attributed it to the fuses behind that panel when a component is activate, for example the venting, or perhaps the seat heaters. I've noticed it lately in the colder weather, though I see you are in Houston.

It only happens when in motion, so I don't think it is a relay...

I've noticed a similar sound when it's cold, haven't been able to track it down. Put felt under the trim - no change.

On my passat I only hear it when I am going on or off the throttle, so only when the car is moving

It could be the manual moon roof closing tool rattling..?

I believe it's located in the compartment on the left side of the dash, access it with the drivers door open.

I have similar noise around steering wheel, but its more squiling than rattling. Driving me crazy..its been ever since i took delivery. Took it to dealer and they put some lube. In a couple of days came back again. I will bring the car to them the end of the month, hopefully they will track it down this time. Will keep you posted once its done

I have this in my 2014 A5. It sounds like the ticking of a relay, it does it 3 times in a row, then stops. Nothing else seems off with the car, so i've just ignored it. If i had to pinpoint the location, it sounds like from behind the headlight switch??

Me too guys. Actually glad to know this is somewhat commonplace. I have a new 13 A5. Have noticed this first five minutes driving each morning in cold. Seems to be coming from the fuse box area. Not an electrician, but references to relays sounds to be a correct diagnosis. I think it has to do with the thermostat. Will mention it to my dealer when I go in for my 15,000 mile service. If anyone gets it's professionally diagnosed, please report that here? Thanks.

It is a relay... A few clicks on cold starts, as described in the dash behind the headlight switch somewhere. Wondered about it and asked myself a long time ago. That noise is normal. Any other noise keep hunting certainly. Mine is pretty quiet otherwise after getting the rattle in the right rear taken care of.

My dash rattles when it's cold and annoys the crap out of me. I guess I could try to take it to the dealer but I doubt they would do anything. It comes from basically between the gauges and nav screen.

Bump....anyone found a solution to this? It is not the relays. Something is either behind the gauges or near the left door/windshield that makes this noise from about 30-70mph. It is a vibration created rattle. Two trips to the dealer and no luck on a solution yet....

Not yet. My car will be due for oil change early Feb so when i take or to dealer will let them play with it and hopefully track that noise. Its audible only on uneven parts of the road..but not rattling noise to me..more like click click and squealing . Will keep you posted

What do you mean by relay? I have noticed this on both my b8 and b8.5 and it seemed to happen after going over speed bumps at low speed in b8 now in the b8.5 I have also noticed it a few times on highway, is it some sort of recalibration in the esc or asr systems? That was always my guess cause it sounds electrical and not mechanical seeing as how the sound was initiating after a bump and not during it in the b8 and just cruising in the b8.5

On the older cars, there was a TSB out for dealer adding felt/tape to weaken the BSR issue with the plastic/windshield area. If it is not a relay, pull your dash trim and add some felt tape to help insulate. I do hear mine occasionally on cold mornings until the cabin temp is warm.

    Hey,

I did not read the responses so I'm sorry if this has been mentioned - does the sound change as the car warms up? look at the left fuse cover, as a test make a ~1.5" ball out of a napkin and tape it to the covers center and take a spin. same issue on 2 our of 3 of my S5s. my solution was to just put someone on the covers inside to apply some pressure the the plastic piece. I hope this is it as this sort of stuff drives me nuts.

I have the same exact problem on my '14 A5. I've tried to narrow down the source countless times and I don't think its an electrical issue. It just sounds like cheap components rattling. The cold weather definitely brings it out in the morning but it seems to go away after 20-30 mins of driving with the heat on. It doesn't seem to be linked to anything other than engine vibration + cold, stiff interior panels.

I just turn up the stereo and try to ignore it until the car warms up.

Got a 2013 rs5 and found it clicks either behind the steering wheel or just to the left of it under moderate acceleration or general turning, sounds similar to an indicator clicking off, really can be distracting and is very annoying, car is due to go in on the 17th of March so we will see what happens.

I have a 2013 S5 and I have the same problem; notice it really when going over bumpy roads. I think it is coming from the dashboard, i.e. the silver rings around the odometer. I noticed when I push on the rings the noise stops…..
Has anyone found a solution to this, the rattling is kind of annoying.

Have a similar problem, but on the right. It always sounds like something rolling around in the glovebox. I've checked dozens of time and there's nothing there. It drives me insane, especially on bumpy roads.

I have the same problem. It's not always there but appears every once a while. At first I thought it was the B&O speaker on the door because the rattle went on with music( especially when it's cold). Now I think it might be coming from the air vent/ trim. So I took them out yesterday to see if that's the case. No rattle so far but would test it for one more week.

My RS5 still has the steering wheel hum vibration at idle issue from the transmission cooler line.

Wasn't there at delivery, they've fixed it once, but it came back and they have never been able to get rid of it since :(

Was going to get an S8, but based on now far I have gotten through Audi customer relations, I'm definitely having second thoughts and won't even consider getting another Audi until this issue is resolved

Anyone have a rattle/ticking/clicking from the front left dash?

Ps- anyone in the SoCal area with an rs5?

Would love to meet up and see if your car has the same issue. I've driven another new RS5 and it definitely didn't have this issue.

Brought my car into the dealership for the same issue, seems they had fixed the rattling noise issue by uninstalling and re-installing the left dashboard ( i.e. tightening up the screws ). Side note I notice sometimes if I go over a big pothole my passenger cabin drawer just pops open by itself anyone else having this issue?

I get something similar in my RS5 - sounds like a slight knocking noise from around the steering/cluster area and is particularly evident when cornering on a bumpy road.

That happened both on my moms A4 and on my RS5. I opened and shut em a couple of times and it was fine after that.
