Cracked windshield on 3 month old 2014 S4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just noticed a crack on my windshield and will need to have it replaced (large crack, cannot be repaired). The car is only 3 months old. I had my windshield tinted on the top, so Audi will probably blame the crack on the tinted windshield. My deductible is high, $1000, so I will have to pay out of pocket.

I am located in Los Angeles area. I called several auto glass referred by the local Audi dealers, and their price are from $580 to $780. Since this is a 2014, I want OEM glass and not after market for $350.

Anyone in the Los Angeles area has any recommendation for auto glass replacement? I saw a post somewhere (couldn't find it anymore) that the windshield cost $350 and $125 for installation. That is much better than the quotes I received.

    Thanks so much!

Honestly when it comes to glass and the windshield I would go with the dealer. This way if they do it wrong you can go back to them. Also I would go with OEM glass.

Also the prices from the dealers sound correct.

I just did mine with OEM glass from safelite. They did a great job, and total bill will right at 400 including installation and new rain sensor glue. It is actually very easy for them, the audi is not a complicated windshield at all. You do have to insist on OEM though, they will try to sell you on their brand. FYI I contacted an Audi dealer also, and they use an aftermarket installer, they don't do it themselves, so I would just go with Safelite as they do this all the time.

    Dear u2nelson:

$400 is a good price. The Safelite location in Van Nuys gave me a quote of $780. Do you still have the contact of the Safelite location where you had used?

    Thanks.

I agree, $400 is a great price. I'm having mine replaced this week, $518 for OEM glass with the rain sensor through Safelite. They are getting the new windshield from the local Audi dealer. As stated above, my dealer uses an aftermarket installer so going through Safelite seems to be the best option.

When I had mine done a cpl yrs ago, I checked with two Stealerships who both recommended the same guy.
He brought out a Plinkington (OEM) glass and had it installed under an hr.

Make sure if you have Auto Sensing Wipers, that you tell the installer that - they need to order the correct glass w/ the sensor window.

    Easy Peasy.

If it doesn't say Plinkington or Sekurit, it's aftermarket. So make sure you get the good schtuff!

lol bro, it's "Pilkington." As to Sekurit, it also may say "Saint-Gobain" instead as it is the same company.

Do a search on this forum. There is a recent thread (a few months old?) about getting OEM glass. Its the only way to go. I remember it had something to do with acoustics.

    Edit: Here is the thread.

I just had my windshield replaced for free, it was covered under my auto insurance policy. You may have free glass replacement and not even know it. Call them and ask.

Dude, sucks to live in a state where auto glass isn't mandatory on every policy. Never paid for a windshield in my life.

FYI Most dealers will use a aftermarket company (like safelite) to install glass. Go with aftermarket company and ask them to source OEM glass.

I replaced the windshield (small crack, dime size) on my Q5 last year, went via insurance (Geico) and used Safelite. They gave me OEM (came out cheaper than aftermarket) and it was free (I have a $1000 deductible too). Just talk it out with your insurance and they should work out something for you.

Always a good reminder to check your auto policy coverage since sometimes your insurance agent misses coverage. It's OK to have a large comp deductible for fire, theft and vandalism or deer hits if yu want, but full glass coverage usually only costs $ 2-3 extra per month in most states. They always tell you to raise your coverage deductibles to save $$ but you might be surprised how little you save by going to $1k from $ 500.

Thanks everyone for your input. Called my insurance Progessive, and my comprehensive deductible is $1000 so I am out of luck.

I am going with the local guy referred by the local dealer for the OEM glass, acoustic with rain sensor.

This forum is a god send, I have learned so much!

Does anyone know what Audi's position on defects, if any for windshields? Yesterday the windshield cracked on my S4 just sitting in the parking lot. The is no damage from chips, spider cracks or anything. Just a very fine crack about a foot long all the way to top corner (passenger side). I just bought the car a month ago, 2013 S4 CPO.

    Talking about bad luck

Just got my windshield replaced 2 days ago $550 after seeking help and advice on this board. Yesterday, I was side swiped by an idiot and damaged part of the left front door, left rear door, and left side area.

    +1

From my experience, a lot of dealerships don't do any bodywork either. They'll usually contract it out to a local body shop.
