Plastidip it. I did the same on my old S4 and it came out great. Cheap and reversible. I have seen a lot of people take their grill off and apart and have it painted only to look like a chipped mess months later. I ran my grill plastidipped black for over a year without any issues.

Thanks. I'm definitely gonna go with Plastidip. I just need to figure out how to remove this grill first.

I have seen people tape off the grille and leave it on the vehicle while plastidipping , the only way to remove the grille is to remove the bumper which is very annoying.

Yon may be right. It may be less of a headache just to take my time and tape off the area and just PD it like that. You did some nice work to your car it looks like from your signature. What shop do you go to? I've been talking to a few shops out in LI and in Jersey trying to figure out where to go for my springtime mods.

Most dip while on the car, but its only a 20-30 minutes job to remove the grille. There are several DIY's on removal and dipping grilles.

Yup, what Mops said. Dip the grill with the bumper on, super easy, just make sure to put a piece of cardboard or something in front of the radiator grill so you don't spray thru the grill into the radiator. You can easily take off the thick plastic cover the covers the front top of the radiator to slide a piece down in front. Tape off the grill how you want it and I used a big piece of painters plastic to cover the whole front of my car to prevent any overspray. Make sure to do at least 5 good coats otherwise it will be a nightmare if you ever want to peel it off later.

Hey thanks man, The majority of the stuff was done by Dion at Drive Auto Works in Clifton Nj, they are awesome. Very good prices on labor compared to the guys on Long Island. Tyrolsport in queens is really good too, little more pricey though. Both are great options.

Thanks a lot guys. Great help! Actually just ordered from dipyourcar a few cans of black and gloss PD. As well as the tape and tarp. I'm going to wait for the next nice day and start really early to make sure everything is protected especially the radiator. I'm going to end up doing the grill and emblems and silver trim, as well as the wheels. Thanks again fellas.

I'm gonna definitely reach out to Dion and get some prices for the stuff I'm looking to get done. Thanks nycs5sodope.

From my experience, I had the same idea as you, S5fella, but I wanted more of a permanent option. I found a company who were prepared to spray my S5 grille according to my request, which was piano black on the grille surround and satin black for the rest of the grill.

Just a quick note here. The previous owner obviously had the same idea and painted the grill, probably while it was still on the car. The only thing was that he used a very bad quality paint without first priming the surface of the grille. This resulted in the paint starting to peel off and really looked ugly.

The removal of the front bumper was a bit of a mission, but there are plenty of guides to explain how to do this. I then removed the grille and gave it to the company for them to do their thing. 2 days later I went to collect and I would have to say that I'm very impressed. They first had to remove all the previous paint from the previous owner of my car, then primed the whole thing in preparation for the new coat of spray paint. They sprayed 2 coats, I think, and then applied a coat of chip resistant clear coat to both the grill surround and main grille inner. The result is really cool with a nice glossy shine from the grill surround and a slightly matt look of the satin black to the rest of the grille.

Putting the front bumper back on the car was also a bit of a mission, especially when it started to rain in the middle of it and the car was parked outside on wheel jack stands, as the front wheels were taken off to get the front bumper off.

I have heard of good results with using plastidip as well, and will look good with a very matt finish, however this wasn't the finish I was looking for.

    Good luck.
    Regards,
    Steve Knight
