Looks like it has the same red line as the S cars.

Same concept in my B7RS4, after cold startup, 7,000rpm's until oil temps. warm to 122 degrees, then 8,250rpm's thereafter.

Very cool feature, but it's nothing new... I had already assumed that's what those lights were for because my former '06 E60 M5 and '08 E92 M3 both had the same lit rev limit indicators on the tach that moved higher up the tach as the engine/oil got closer to operating temperature. So in a way, Audi is kinda late to the party with these variable rev-limit indicators.

Al Pettee: I don't remember my B7 RS4 having those rev-limit lights on the tach... did they really have them? It's been 6 years since I got rid of my RS4.

It's the same thing as S6/7. The only disappointment would be 5500 and 6500 limits are no different from ones in my S6. I was expecting RS7 to have higher rev.

How is that a disappointment? It's a turbocharged engine, not a normally aspirated one. Audi already had the gearing advantage by using a ZF 8-speed over the 7-speed S-tronic, so why would they need to rev higher to achieve higher torque and power when they can just run higher boost (with more efficient turbos), change the cam profiles, improve intake and exhaust system, and bolster the associated engine bits (crank, pistons, rods, valves, etc) to get remarkable gains. I certainly don't think Audi disappointed in what improvements they did to the 4.0T motor over the S6/S7 version. It's not like tuning the normally aspirated B7 S4 4.2L V8 to rev higher in order to acquire RS4-level expectations. Also, if Audi had made the RS7 rev higher with higher compression, it would likely be less tunable, and that would just be a damn shame, especially knowing now what APR could do with the RS7's 4.0T.

Just expected RS car to have higher rev like a race car and I don't see anything wrong with the difference in your or my expectation. You sounded a bit offended by my comment though.

Offended? lol. Why would I be offended? I'm just trying to figure out why you're disappointed in Audi's approach to tuning a turbocharged engine to RS specs, in that they did not take the normally aspirated approach by increasing revs and/or increasing displacement. If anything, the real disappointment would've been if Audi did raise the rev limit to say 7500 rpms and also the compression, instead of making bigger improvements to the actual forced induction system, which could've theoretically resulted in less potential for bigger gains from simple ECU tuning.

Also, keep in mind that this engine design route has allowed Audi to avoid the gas guzzler tax. Not that RS7 buyers care much about that but the overall market trend surely does. A higher revving 4.0T would've likely not achieved the EPA ratings that the current car has. Pretty sure that matters to Audi's execs who like many other car manufacturers are all in heavy competition for associating their luxury marques as being efficient as well as high-performing.

If you wanted a high revving car, this segment no longer has it, and hasn't had it for a while if you don't count Maserati's slower Quattroporte. Last one was the E60 M5. Sadly, it's a dying breed.

I look at it as a wholistic package. I've had the privilege of pushing (within safe limits) the RS7. The power is incredible, throughout the power curve. Most of the power comes well below anywhere the rev line. Only complaint is that the rev limit is reached very quickly lol

And yes the tuning opportunities are much better on this car than one with higher compression. Lower compression = more boost before detonation......

I must clarify, there are no moving rev limit LIGHTS on the tach., just the same fixed red mark over 8K, BUT at cold startup, a 7K limit message on the tach. warns of the limit until warmup.

I agree. I was surprised to see they had the same red lines despite the differences in the engines. I understand why they did what they did. I mean it's what everyone is doing.

The E39 M5 and E46 M3 had them as well. Audi is definitely late to that game (E39 debuted in 1998).

Anyone notice that the "stat-up" limit @5500 is shot at 59 MPH?

One would think that fooling wiht your camara at highway speeds is a td unsafe. I know Maryland has texting laws, but not Photography while driving?

Actually I've made a 275 mile round trip from Baltimore to Philadelphia, and back, in a mixture of comfort and dynamic mode and averaged 25 mpg with an average of 55 mph. Not bad. That was before the APR tune, so curious how that will affect it.
