    boost gauge too bright

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'll be honest, I'm too lazy to search much this morning. I installed the Podi mech boost gauge over the weekend and tapped the blue-grey wire off the headlight controls but not happy with it. The gauge lights up as soon as the door opens and stays lit after the car is off (eventually goes off). Not to mention it's bright as hell.

Anybody got a better source for gauge lighting? There's got to be a lead to the instrument cluster that is dimmed (yep I know how to adjust those with the +/- buttons). Either that or put a resistor inline, but after all the BS with the LED plate lights and resistors, I'd just as soon avoid that if I can.

One more thing, I'm not making the boost that I think I ought to. I haven't done any serious pulls but it seems to hit about 8-9 psi and that's it. Soooooo...first thing I will replace is the diverter valve - I know I haven't touched it in over 100K. What else should I be looking for?

Just install a tinny resistor in line and be done with it

I'd agree with Phil. Everything will be 12v so you'll need a small inline resistor to get less than that

It sounds like your tapped to the wrong wire in the headlight controls? I just have the AWE gauge but its tapped so that it only lights up when my instrument panel/lights come on and not when the door opens.

^^EDIT: Alex hit it on the head. I think you have tapped the wrong wire as well. Mine comes on when I switch on my headlights.

Can't tell if you're tuned or not. Sig just says you have a Revo SPS which is just the Revo tune adjuster and not the actual tune itself. Hopefully you didn't buy this off of someone thinking it is the "tune". Those are at least stock numbers so if you're not tuned you're probably fine. But if you're for sure tuned then it sounds like you have a boost leak. Most likely your DV. Easy enough to pull and check it.

Im 90% sure the wire you want to tap into at the light switch is grey. With that the gauge will only light up when your lights are on. And as for my AWE gauge, it took 250-300 ohm resistor to get the brightness I wanted. You could pick up a variable resistor from radio shack, wire it in, and dial in a brightness you like without worrying about what number it is.

Oh yeah, before I got tuned I was at 9 psi. After my off the shelf tune i am at 18ish so take that for what its worth

thanks for the replies. Yeah, looks like I'll have to do some testing to find the right wire and will stop by radio shack for a handfull of resistors.

As for the tune - The SPS switch, packaging and software disc came with the car but I've never really fooled with it 'til recently. When I plug it into the OBDII port it makes all the right sounds according to the directions. If the tune is not there, would it still beep like it was communicating? Guess the best way to tell if it is doing anything is to set it back to stock and see if it runs differently. Or take it to a REVO dealer and let them check it out.

Easiest thing is to click on this link and install the Revo SPS software on a laptop. Then you just use a regular usb printer cable and plug one end into the SPS and the other to your laptop. Launch the software and see if it connects to your ecu. For some reason, I've never had any luck setting my tune up with the dials on the SPS. I just always use a laptop and the software.

1/2 amp 330 ohm resistor did the trick and I had tapped the black/blue wire instead of the grey/blue. much happier with it now. Was thinking....(that usually gets me in trouble) if I could open up the gauge and run separate wiring for the needle so that it lights up all the time like the instrument cluster and have the backlighting come on with the headlights....hmmmm

Opening up the gauge is not difficult. All you have to do is use a pair of pliers and bend the back of the cover open before popping the cover off. From there you have full access to the circuit board and could potentially add another set of wires in.
