EPC Light but no Check Engine?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
09 A4, today I had it in sport mode to pass this horribly slow driver here in seattle, I punched it when getting on the interstate and the car kinda of just went limp, the epc light came on but the car kept going, obviously with less power. I drove the rest of the way home, I stopped and started it again, the epc light is still on but I have no check engine light. I do have one of the B8's with the oil consumption issue that I couldn't get fixed as the dealership wanted 4K to do the work as it was used and out of warranty. Is it common to get the EPC light without getting a check engine light? This week is pretty brutal for me and I don't think I will have time to take it in, any ideas or suggestions?

EPC usually means there is an electrical problem of some sort. Try checking it for codes, it should list what is causing the EPC light. CEL is usually more the mechanical/emissions side of things.

P.S. Yes, Seattle drivers are slow and oblivious 99.999% of the time

Thanks for the reply, will I be able to read the code with my general ODBII scanner or will I need to go to dealer to get VAG read?

Is there an easy/quick way to clear the epc light just on the off chance it was just a fluke?

I don't know for sure, but I woundn't be too hopeful lol The drive By Wire system often has a lot ot do with the EPC light (potentiometer, throttle body, etc), maybe that has something to do with it since you mentioned it happened after punching the throttle to pass

I am not sure about the B8s but in the older B5s and such, misfires usually caused the CEL light to flash.

Pull the negative battery cable off for 30 seconds, might need radio codes and such afterwards.

How do I get the codes and such that you speak of before hand? Are you sure the 2009 actually uses codes? I have the MMI=FEUX Symphony one that looks like mmi but isn't.

No idea about the B8s. Maybe they don't use radio codes. B5s did, and they were usually written on a card in the owner's manual portfolio thing

According to this thread you either don't have a radio code, or if you do and it asks you, the default code is 1234:

Tried the battery disconnect, waiting 30 seconds, pressed brakes to discharge, started up, date and time are wrong, no radio codes asked for but also EPC light still on. I guess I will be contacting the mechanic, this hands down has been the worst car for luck I have ever had in my life :(... Just tried again still no dice,.

Any autozone will scan codes for free. Sounds a little like a P0299 code for turbo underboost. That is pretty much the throttle feel I had as well.

I don't think it's a P0299, I actually had that when I first bought the car it was due to a bad turbo, this was something totally different feeling and with the P0299 i got a CEL with this no CEL just the EPC light.

So I got my odbII scanner (it's the automatic tool fyi, which I quite like) anyway since there is no CEL it doesn't report a problem, yet the EPC light is still on as well as it seems to be shifting oddly, like a hybrid between sport and normal. I guess I will be swinging by the dealer tomorrow.

Just got done with the dealer, it was a wastegate issue, was told because of the oil consumption issue I have along with the car being cold and it being cold out that that was probably it, they reset the code and took it for a drive all is ok. Luckily I just had the turbo repaired back in may so it's all under warranty if it does happen again.
