    RS5 windshield replacement

Just my luck....a had a rock fly up and crack my windshield a couple of weeks ago (and a few days after getting it tinted ) and I'm curious what the opinions are on an after market part compared to a dealer. The price difference is about $400 plus another $150 or so to tint it again .

Is having the Audi symbol in the bottom, right hand corner worth the extra money?

I get calls like this all the time. Depending on your insurance company, they should be able to cover the cost of replacement + install or at least a % of it. You definitely want to go OEM when it comes to windshield glass especially if you are leasing the vehicle.

Definitely go OEM. Aftermarket glass is known for having optical distortion. Try Safelite Autoglass for example. You have to tell them that you want OEM glass and then they come to you and install it. They get the glass from the dealer, but the install should be cheaper than what the dealer charges. For most insurances, replacing the windshield is subject to your standard deductible. They usually cover chip repairs, though. I went through this with my S4. Had several chips over like a 6 months period that I was able to repair, but then one hit close to the edge of the windshield and within seconds I had a crack across half the windshield.

I'm purchasing the vehicle and I guess I should clarify what I mean...

When I say aftermarket...I really mean a OEM part but not from the dealer. I do realize that Audi doesn't manufacture the glass themselves and I would be getting the glass from one of the manufacturers that do but it just wouldn't have the Audi symbol on it.

Or...do pay extra for the exact same glass but with the Audi symbol?

I have Geico insurance and I'd have to pay my $500 deductable for them to replace it. The chip is small enough to be repaired but I just HATE looking at it and it is right in my line of sight during driving.

There are actually only a couple of glass manufacturers that supply the OEM and aftermarket glass, but they produce the glass to different standards. I'm not aware of aftermarket glass that is produced to OEM standards, but not sold as as such. The non-OEM glass is cheaper for a reason.

I hear you about the line of sight. Been there. Happened to me a few weeks after I had to replace the windshield. I would wait with replacing the windshield. Chances are you get more chips and maybe even a crack. From my own experience, I can tell you that your brain will eventually make it disappear. It will bother you for a while, but eventually you won't even notice it anymore.

If it is just a chip, get it repaired; that is usually free - if done correctly, you won't notice it.

Also, make sure to check on acoustic glass. It should be on the original glass if it is.

Windshields for the A5/S5/RS5 are dealer only items. Safelite is a good company to install. You'll also require a new windshield kit.
