    Engine Buzz after rev

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All

    I have a 2006 A4 B7 2.0TFSI

Am am getting a strange buzzing sound (like a playing card in a bicycle spokes) when lifting off the accelerator.

The sound seems to die out when it dips below 1500rpm

I can hear it clearly coming from the engine bay between 1500 and 2500rpm and not sure if it is there after that as the engine sound drowns it out.

Any ideas what could cause this?

I don't know how to open the throttle from the engine bay so could not pinpoint the sound, will get assistance tonight from someone so we can play find that sound.

This happens while driving an while idle (in neutral, clutch in and out etc).

I will try and capture the sound this evening on stick it on YouTube, perhaps that will assist.

Its like a ZZZZZZzzzz sound. it sounds like something is winding down, probably turbo related looking at the rev range?

    Thanks

It could be a boost leak. Possibly something stuck in the cooling fans. I would definitely have a friend press the accelerator while you listen int the engine bay to try and pinpoint it.

    Good luck!

Does this occur when the engine is cold/warm or at all times. I have the same situation on my 1.8T and only occurs when its cold outside. I think im suspecting my oil.

Are you sure it's not a "ticking" noise?

Seems to be warm or cold, it is like a ticking, buzzing type sound, hard to explain other than it sounds like something is being hit by a fan rotor.

I will be recording a YouTube vid tonight for further clarification.

Here is the first in-cabin video

2nd one (inside the engine bay)

The noise seems to be coming from the turbo.

p.s. are these engines supposed to sound like a diesel?

When was the last time the cam follower was changed? It sounds like it's knocking pretty bad! I'd have the cam follower inspected ASAP.

Only had the car a week so no idea when last it was changed.

How often should they be changed/inspected?

I will pull it out and have a look, is there a tutorial online somewhere on how to inspect it?

    Thanks,

Thanks guys, I will try and source the parts tomorrow morning.

    Appreciate the help!

EDIT: Is my engine louder than it should be? excluding the discussed noise?

Someone form Audi Club South Africa says their engine is much quieter than mine?

Our engines sound like diesels, it is the injectors that you hear. There is a video floating around that shows how loud they are. As for your engine... sounds louder than mine as stated you should check the follower... I am betting its pretty bad. The buzz noise is not normal though. I read on a few other forums about a buzz like that from the turbo (other cars not a4 directly) and they ended up replacing the turbo in a lot of cases... I hope you didn't get screwed on the purchase..

My car has the exact same buzzing noise. I first noticed it about 6 months ago. 6 speed quattro with 220,000 kms. Stock.

Since I first noticed the buzzing, I've done the following:

    - New fuel pump
    - Changed cam follower 3 times.
    - Added catch can
    - carbon clean
    - removed intercoolers and cleaned out oil, cleaned MAFs and thrust sensor
    - replaced diverter valve. No tears noted in old one.

The sounds is still there. None of the above was done to address the noise, but perhaps it will help you cross a few things off your list.

I did the cam follower and it's still there, getting some mixed opinions, actuator, DV etc

Still no idea what this is

Try swapping out the diverter valve. They are fairly cheap. And make sure all the maintenance is up to date. Oil change, filter, spark plugs, coil packs, etc..

Hows the weather in south africa this time of year? I'm gonna be in Johannesburg Next month. Hoping to have time to catch a flight to cape town.

Worked for me, just didn't get the nut tight enough so it has loosened bringing back the buzzing.

I am pretty sure it's my waste gate, I have literally changed every single thing (including the whole engine) except the turbo and the sound is still there lol.

Only things that are still the same in that area is the turbo, the exhaust (incl. CAT) and the tranny.

    You underestimate my laziness

I actually spoke to my mechanic about this last night and will have it done when the car gets services in a couple weeks.

Both of my B7s did/do this at this point I consider it normal. It certainly does not cause me any problems first car died of rear ending 115k second car is at 160k. Both completely free of performance problems.

wastegate actuator for sure. You can adjust it and it is very easy to do. In some cases, the adjustment nut may be a little hard to turn, but putting air to the wastegate actuator relieves some of the pressure and makes it easier. All you have to do is get under the car and use a 10mm wrench to loosen the locknut and then use an extended pair of needle nose pliers to adjust it.

This is easier said than done if you have big arms and hands. There's also a safety that on the nut that you need to remove before you break the epoxy around it. Never was able to do it until I swapped the chra.

The wastegate rattle is happening inside the hot side of the housing at the wastegate flap door, not outside at the actuator arm. Adjusting the wastegate actuator arm will not cure this. You could rebuild the door, if it is even a serviceable part, which I don’t believe it is. I know I couldn’t find one when this happened to me. So what you really need to do is replace the whole turbo.

You can't get it alone, you need to purchase an entire K03. There are aftermarket actuators but if it comes to that you'd be better off rebuilding and adjusting on a bench - or- have it done professionally so they can balance the wheel.

It's actually the swing arm that connects to the tiny hatch that allows exhaust flow inside the turbo. The other end is attached to the vacuum controlled actuator. The real reason it makes noise is lateral play in it not the front to back movement of the arm/plunger. When you get up close you'll know what I mean.

For those that have never confirmably heard it.

I posted a video but my photobucket won’t let it be private.

The door is loose in the housing. You can usually spin it freely when this happens. That is the noise you are hearing when you get this sound. It’s the wastegate door not sealing properly and rattling around in there.

Put an automotive stethoscope on the hot side. You’ll hear it plain as day.
