Would these Tail Lights be legal in Jersey?

I found them on ECS, Jom Smoked Clear LED tail lights, I know they're discontinued on BFI but still available.

My question is, are they illegal in the area? I had some New Cop in my town try to bust my balls over my black stud license plate cover, claiming he couldn't read it while the #'s were clearly visible (The lower NJ part isn't, think he needed an excuse while trying to see if my friend was on something, just cause he's basically Tweek from South Park), so now I'm a bit concerned. While ECS claims they're for off-road/show use only, they also say that about 6000k Halogen bulbs when you see lots of people with bright Bright HID's, so I'm a bit skeptical.

    Thanks for taking a look,

    Rogue

I've seen many cars with NJ plates on it with literally blacked out taillights. These are just smoked, I don't see why they'd be illegal.

yea I'd say go for it. As far as the plate they have to be able to read all the text on the plate. I got one a few years ago becuase like you i had a frame covering the "garden state". I now only buy slim plates and avoid the frustration.

These are legal. The framing are tinted but the lights themselves are bright. Nothing to worry about.

    Rogue,
Technically in NJ even the garden state at the bottom of the plate must be visible.
It's a BS law and most cops will use it when "giving you a break", rarely as sole offense.

As for the tint, if it obscures or eliminates the reflector, you can be cited.
It looks as if there are no reflectors in those taillights, hence the off road/show disclaimer.

The law is 39:3-47 improper lighting equipment; altering equipment, and carries a minimum fine of $43.00

I hope this helps, good luck.

^^^ This ...and yes if your plate frame covers any part of the plate you can be ticketed. Mostly I find this an issue in your area of the state. When I went to school at Monmouth University and used my car there for about a year and was pulled over so many times I lost count for no front plate, and the rear plate frame issue. In fact I use the Law Enforcement plates and the words "garden state" are not even on the bottom and I explained that to the cop and was still ticketed. Then again I've also been pulled over in that area because the cop wanted to see the interior of my car lol Eventually they began recognizing the car and the pulling over slowed down. (And if it helps I was ticketed very few times when pulled over)

I say go for it, many of the towns around you have cops that just like to get on your case because your most likely in a modded car.

    Good Luck!
